    Omnican needles?

Maybe thick booklet was a bit of an exaggeration; it's printed on very thick paper/thin card and is shiny and glossy. And contains useful information such as how to inject myself I can't help feeling that my GP should not waste their money sending this stuff through the post to people; it's...

    Driving

Recently diagnosed T1 so went onto insulin in July. I had to notify DVLA; still able to drive (I rang and checked) after sending in form while they processed it. Had to send in license and got a three-year one a week later. Had to notify insurance companies (Wife and mine); chat went something...

    Omnican needles?

When I was diagnosed I had GlucoRX needles from the hospital and not only were they painful but they also left horrendous bruises all over my belly and thighs. When I got my next box of needles from the pharmacy they gave me Novofine which were a lot less painful - and now I hardly ever bruise...

Nervous About Going Back To School

One other thing to consider; check out https://www.diabetes.org.uk/How_we_help/Local_support_groups/ We are a member of (our local paediatric support group. Basically once a month, we meet at a village hall and the kids do an activity (chocolate moulds, games night, science experiments) and the...

    Struggling to stay in range

Apologies then. The advice we were given many moons ago was to validate basal rate was in the right ballpark was to have a low-calorie zero-carb meals for a day. We've done it with my daughter a couple of times and she stayed reasonably steady but obviously, as I said, that post contained just...

    Struggling to stay in range

I've just had (as in yesterday) the GAD antibody test; awaiting results. My consultant said that if she waited, she couldn't get it, so she's asked for it knowing that they'll do it for me!

    Struggling to stay in range

I am probably not a million miles away from your situation; I am 34 and was diagnosed as type 1 in July. I was told I was "too old for type 1 and too young for type 2." My father is T2 and my daughter is T1 and I went with an inkling I was the latter. On an off-chance almost I found my blood...

Work And Driving Advice For A Newbie

We have the Libre for my daughter (she's eight so obviously doesn't have a driving license); we use it in conjunction with her finger pricker when she is doing strenuous activities or we want to have a picture of her blood sugar. I can see the attraction of it. Personally, I have a regimen...

Work And Driving Advice For A Newbie

Look in the driving and dvla section. I've seen it mentioned a few times. Cgm devices measure different blood substances, I think cgm is 15min behind meters and dont confirm to the iso standards for accuracy. Hence the dvla position.

    Monitoring

Assuming type 1... (because that's what I know and can talk about ) Some sort of cgm will tell you. Look at freestyle libre, it takes blood readings every minute and will show you when you are peaking. But it may not matter... I test before food and two and an half hours afterwards. Both...

    Problematic Novorapid Flexpens.

My daughters Roche pump allows bolus increments of 0.1U. Just as well as at some parts of the day her insulin sensitivity is 1U=5.8mmol/l! But there is limited CGM capabilities on that pump so it's probably a bit behind the curve now. John

    Problematic Novorapid Flexpens.

I had to ask for it. I spoke to my GPs after I was diagnosed and asked for a NovoRapid Echo pen. I got asked why, and had to explain about the half-unit increments. It came two days later to the pharmacy to collect with the test strips, Lantus, NovoRapid cartridges, etc. A worthwhile five...

    Happy News! [emoji93]

Congratulations. From experience, I think you will need this: Everyone ... and I mean even the non-parents ... wanted to give advice :-)

    Problematic Novorapid Flexpens.

Sounds like they may not have been well-handled or safely transported if you have more than one causing issues. I use a Novopen Echo now; the refillable cartridge pen allows for 0.5U dosage increments and I found that to be far better. John

T1: What Happens If I Don't Take My Insulin?

I was in hospital getting diagnosed a month ago. On the bed opposite was a guy who'd been admitted with Diabetic Ketoacidosis for not taking his insulin. My wife's friend was airlifted to hospital at University for nousing up her diabetes and had to have (eventually) an organ transplant. This...

Nervous About Going Back To School

Obviously the school need to know. I presume they already do and have the plans in place if you collapse/etc. You didn't mention your therapy. If you have a pump it may support the concept of a "temporary basal rate." This is where less insulin is supplied to do the basal part of your treatment...

    Type 1: Ashamed Of Diabetes

No. I wear my MedicAlert style bracelet. My friends know. A couple of my fingers are dotted. But being diabetic is not something I had any control over. It's happened. As I said to my wife when my little girl was diagnosed, there are lots of parents getting diagnoses in Childrens' Wards where...

Work And Driving Advice For A Newbie

I was diagnosed in late July and I think my sugars were under control pretty quickly. I rarely go outside the 4-7.5 range now. During the first week I tested far more regularly and made adjustments to the carb-ratio at different times of the day and those adjustments seem to have been a pretty...

    Type 1 Longer Needle's

If the insulin is taking awhile to work could it be worth moving your injection to before the meal (say 15 minutes before) so the insulin is working as you eat. Or trying to eat more low GI foods so that the immediate carb intake is a lower hit. (And strong black coffee should lower blood...

Diagnosed As T1 After My Daughter

Neuphrotic syndrome is essentially where the kidneys excrete protein so when my daughter first showed signs of something being amiss she had a huge belly and thunder thighs like she was in a fat suit - she had gone from under 20kg to 25kg in less than a week through water retention. She spent...
