New Type 1 - alcohol advice

I’m assuming you are new to being a T1. Carbs are your enemy (beer), however on rare occasions I will drink beer, but lucky for me I prefer spirits anyway. Spirits are your friend. Most cocktails are your enemy as they have a lot sugar either natural as in orange juice or sugar cordials. For...

    Units per day

I use about 10% less on a pump about 70 Units a day, depending, if I get time to do lots of exercise that goes down to 40 units. I know in Australia that you can’t get a pump until you have been on insulin for a while, as you need to be practised at managing insulin and food. When things go...

    Type 1 and Statins.

I would suggest you find a 2 part series “Heart of the matter” on the internet done by the ABC Australian Broadcasting Commission same as the BBC only much poorer. Their flagship science program put statins and how they were ‘approved’ for human consumption under scrutiny as well some nasty...

    What needle length...?

Same here I was initially using 8mm, now 4mm when I inject which is rare as I now use a pump.

    Latest Libre news

I think 24 sensors is a porky. They will have expired. It appears they have about a 6 month life span and normally by the time you get them you have about 4 months before they are passed their use by date. Hopefully the iWatch is not that far off being able to measure BGL. When they crack...

    Big change in Insulin requirements

I ride 40km a day Mon to Fri (to and from work). This over halved my insulin intake. Even the 4 days over Easter my insulin needs don’t change, it normally takes a week before things go haywire, so the ride may well last a week

    Uncomfortable Insulin Pump

I’m using the MIO. You may want to go for the shorter cannula infusion set. Like with injections you always find that nerve every so often. I have the Enlite as well and they hurt much more frequently than the MIO’s. I assume you are putting them in the ‘correct’ place. There are some of us...

Insulin inhalers - Have your say!

This was not applicable for people whom live in the UK. I didn’t read any further than that.

Best Bg monitor? What works for you?

I found the beyer to be very inaccurate. All the others seem to be quite accurate. Then again it’s only a guide as 20 min latter your BGL could be sky rocketing up or down so plus or minus 7mmol/l. All have their advantages and disadvantages The strips that come in the cylinders are more...

    How do people manage swimming?

There are lots of options. 1. Many pumps are water resistant so as long as your pump doesn’t go deeper than 2m and you are not submerged for more than 90min go for it PLEASE CHECK YOUR PUMPS SPECIFICATIONS BEFORE TAKING IT INTO THE POOL 2. Bolus a little before getting in the pool and get out...

    At a loss, need advice

A pump may help a lot. My insulin consumption decreased by 30% and control increased and dropped by almost 2% with my HbA1c.

    Either Hypos or highs!

It did to me until I went onto a pump.

Taking a shower with Medtronic 640G

Now I know what has been going wrong. My BGL has been really high, but my blood has been really really clean and very bubbly. Who said we need medical professionals to solve our D problems

    Very strange change in ratios

I more than halved my insulin when I started doing serious amounts of exercise. I was hypos all the time for about 2 weeks until I got it all adjusted correctly. Is he doing a lot more exercise or going though a growth spurt?

Taking a shower with Medtronic 640G

Same here, unplug it. Technically it’s water resistant (not waterproof) so if you want to out a rope around your neck and hang it from that go for it, but normally I have just done battle with Ms Dawn Phenomen, so I have plenty of insulin swishing about.

    Loopable pumps?

I assume by looping you mean feedback and adjust insulin dose (commonly referred to as an artificial pancreas). I can only comment on the Medtronic. The 640g will read from a sensor and display it on the pump screen. It will also suspend insulin if you are to low. I have this configuration...
