    New member - anxious!

It does get better, honestly - terrifying at first, I know - but you are very welcome here and please let us know if we can help with questions or just offer a shoulder to rant/cry on. Snodger (a type 1)

    Newly diagnosed Type TBC

don't forget that lots of fruit is high in carbs. You probably know that already but just in case you don't... eg a large banana is about the same amount of carbs as a Krispy Kreme ring doughnut. (20-25g). I find it quite helpful to gorge on the lower carb fruits, eg a handful of blueberries is...

Eating less. more often - DAFNE

all great (and very interesting) advice jopar but the OP's right, on the standard DAFNE course they say don't test until your quick acting's finished, i.e. usually 4 hours. [edit] - rereading that I sound a bit snarky and pedantic, I don't mean to be, sorry if it came over that way.

Cannot make any sugar test less than 200 after 2hrs of meal

Re: Cannot make any sugar test less than 200 after 2hrs of m It's very hard indeed for type 1s to get sugar down to normal levels at only 1 and 2 hours after a meal. If you are managing to get her down to 200 after 2 hours (I'm assuming that's about 11 in the measurements we use in the UK) then...

Eye test showed abnormalities not sure what to expect now.

Re: Eye test showed abnormalities not sure what to expect no it sounds to me as if they are microaneurysms, tiny swellings or tiny bleeds in the little blood vessels in the eye. While of course keeping your blood sugar steady is important to try and make sure you don't get any worse, it's worth...

Type 1, new to forum, diagnosed last December!

Coming out of honeymoon (agree that it's a terrible name) isn't your health deteriorating at all. I actually found it was slightly easier once I was 'properly diabetic', because it means that I had a slightly more stable base from which to learn about how my body reacted. When you're...

Need a bit of quick advice....

Ideally you count to 8ish, to be sure, but I really wouldn't worry about it. I don't think I ever leave my needle in more than 3 seconds! And I am perfectly normal 8) DON'T WORRY.

    diabetes/bipolar/physical ailments.

if you are already on insulin and happy to learn how to use it in a more complex regime, you could ask about basal/bolus. That's when you take the insulatard (background or basal insulin) but also give yourself injections of a fast-acting insulin each time you eat to cover the carbs in your food...

Why has Lantus changed from cartridge to throw away pen?

you're quite right. Sorry. I was angry on the OP's behalf and wrote the wrong thing!

    Question about the liver

yes, sorry if I came across a bit cold. I think it's totally fine to explore alternatives. That's how we find out useful things. I'm not an expert but yes, I think it's relatively clear-cut. The healthy body is pretty amazing. Of course, the fat itself would then start to cause problems. In...

    Insulin to Carb ratio

all excellent advice. try keeping a diary for a while, noting what you have eaten and insulin taken - you should be able to see a pattern that will give you a clue as to your personal ratio. Eg to take a very simple example - if your bg was ok before you ate, you had 40g carbs and 4 units fast...

Why has Lantus changed from cartridge to throw away pen?

Your DSN is wrong, basically. Or, I hate to be cynical, but maybe a Lantus sales rep took her out for lunch? As far as I'm aware there's no move towards throw-away pens. If I were you I'd go back with this page printed out: http://products.sanofi.us/lantus/lantus.html (see Doseage Forms and...

    Question about the liver

I'm always up there with anyone questioning authority but I'm not sure I understand exactly what you are questioning. But as I understand it, a) glycogen is a temporary storage solution for the body. If the liver's full, the extra energy gets stored as fat - not poured back into the blood...

Do you guys actually tell your employers you are diabetic?

Re: Do you guys actually tell your employers you are diabeti I bet they don't, you know. I never ever told employers for about 15 years for all the reasons others have outlined above. Finally decided I would 'come out', and everyone was absolutely astonished. Nobody had guessed even though...

    Average blood sugar results

Here you go http://www.diabetes.co.uk/downloads/fil ... 20IFCC.pdf it's 8.3% in 'old money'. if you're a Type 1 that means you're doing slightly better than average for Type 1s in the UK.

    Question about the liver

Not sure I understand your question - yes, you're right, those high readings were temporary. Constant high blood sugar damages other bits of your body though and that damage can sometimes not be reversed. To take an analogy - you could be running a machine using dirty oil and you can at any...

    Sauna/steam and Blood Sugar

why is sweating meant to be "bad for diabetics"? That sounds like rubbish to me. No offence to you Sid, I'm not saying you are talking rubbish, I just don't trust that statement on that website. It doesn't give any reason... and I never trust anything that says "this is bad for 'diabetics'"...
