    Am I Type 1 or Type 2?

If you want a label then go with type 1, because we are rarer and more exciting... :)

    Autoimmune system

As Daibell says, change your doctor. Find one who knows about diabetes, because anyone saying that different types of diabetes have the same treatment does not know about diabetes. Some GPs do extra training in diabetes, but it's usually in type 2 only. I would aim to find one who will refer...

    fasting blood

Diabetes is high blood sugar, and what you are getting is low blood sugar. This link might be useful? http://www.netdoctor.co.uk/diseases/fac ... garlow.htm

    Sauna/steam and Blood Sugar

Heat can make insulin more efficient - that can mean for those of us on injections, we need to watch out for hypos in the sauna (ditto hot baths). I would have thought that there are no problems for diet-controlled diabetics, but I don't know about tablet controlled, so I'll let someone more...

    Replacing inner needle cap

ah what can I say. I like bouncing them off me. Everyone's got to have one vice. On a more serious note, I appreciate some other posters' problems with this issue, and I think some people's bodies react more violently than others' to needle reuse. I have met people who get lipo lumps almost as...

    Replacing inner needle cap

pointy ones. noblehead me old codger, what do you mean?? you mean length, make, width..? Tell me why you are asking and I'll understand what info to give you. :shifty: (apparently that smily is called 'shifty' which is probably appropriate)

    Risk factor

it's a tricky thing to give a simple answer to, because not all complications react the same way to blood glucose concentrations, and because most studies have been done on average blood sugar over time rather than on peaks and troughs. So for example an answer often given is that a reduction...

    Replacing inner needle cap

Hey SparkyPony, how's the student nurse thing going? How far into the course are you? Still enjoying it? just so I'm not totally hijacking this thread - I reuse my needles several times, and I put the cap back on in between. Not sure that's all that interesting to anyone but there you go.

    very sad mummy

She's a lucky little girl, because you appreciate how hard it is and because you are getting support from others in similar situations. Plus, she's been diagnosed at a time when the outlook for T1s is better than it's ever been, and the technology and help is better than ever before. She's also...

    Help

You are completely right to ask for a glucose tolerance test if you want to set your mind at rest, but you'd have to be hitting 11 or more after your meals for them to call you actually diabetic. http://www.webmd.boots.com/diabetes/gui ... s-diabetes It's just a label though. If you are feeling...

    How different are we?

I don't know about T2s but T1s vary a lot in our responses to exercise, alcohol, different kinds of carbs, stress, illness, and hormone fluctuations. I'm not talking about our psychological responses but our physical responses - the way our blood sugars fluctuate. Different people also respond...

    DAFNE NOT FOR TYPE 2????

There is a version of the XPERT course for T2s who use insulin - http://www.patient.co.uk/doctor/diabete ... programmes DAFNE's great, but might not be that useful for you, I wouldn't have thought, because it teaches how to manage a T1 body that can't produce any insulin of its own - slightly...

    Blood test query

The timing of the blood test won't make any difference at all. The HbA1c, roughly speaking, measures your average blood sugar over the last 2-3 months. It doesn't matter what time of day they take the blood.

    helping my husband

I bet this will help more than you think. For a start it will mean he meets others with the condition and realises there is more than one way of coping with the condition, and maybe even that his way isn't the best. Fingers crossed for you.

What is going on with my blood sugars?

'fasting days' are just where you don't eat, or you eat foods that don't have any carbohydrate in, and only take your background insulin (the lantus). If the lantus dose is right then your blood sugars will stay roughly level all through the day. If it's rising, you know you might need a bigger...

Diabetes Education and Awareness for Life

I've never come across DEAL (I'm studying diabetes education). I wonder if it is a very local programme just in your area? The programmes for Type 2 that have been reasonably well evaluated are XPERT, as IanD mentioned, and also DESMOND - http://www.desmond-project.org.uk/programmes-271.html...

candyfloss, have you tried the myrios test yourself? If so, your thoughts on reliability and ease of use?

    recent high levels

are you feeling under the weather for any reason? If you are fighting off an infection it could make your sugar rise. Or, it could just be that you need more insulin now - lots of people find their requirements go up after the first six months to a year. Not a bad thing, just you need to find...
