Diabetes user groups on Facebook being shut down

Can't blame them if there are constant misrepresentations of their product in a group using a name that sounds like it has their blessing. The solution would be for them to set up an official group or website for Q&A, but of course that costs money. I expect they've warned other social media...

Dexcom One + wildly different readings to actual levels

Interstitial fluid (ISF) could be seen as the last source of glucose that feeds the organs including the brain (arterial blood --> ISF --> lymph --> venous blood). The lymphatic system (the drainage) is very depleted of glucose but it doesn't matter as it doesn't play a role in supplying...

Dexcom One + wildly different readings to actual levels

Have you taken the lag between finger prick (blood) and sensor (interstitial fluid) into account? It takes 5-15 min for the blood glucose to reach the interstitial fluid and so a finger prick and sensor are not measuring the same thing at the same time - the sensor will follow the finger prick...

    QRisk3 on line form

Yes, it's a T2 calculator - they are working on a T1 but it's a long process gathering all the data EDIT: here are some T1 cardiovascular risk calculators STENO Type 1 Risk Engine https://steno.shinyapps.io/T1RiskEngine/ Swedish 5-year Risk Calculator...

    QRisk3 on line form

Well in the context of predicting cardiovascular (CV) risks for the general population it is currently the most accurate calculator there is for 10-year risk of CV risk, based on historical CV incidence and EHR analysis (in UK). It is great for healthcare providers to plan budgets and care...

    QRisk3 on line form

The QRisk scores are not just for diabetics, but the population as a whole, and hence you cannot include A1c as not everyone has this test done - and in any case, it only reports over 3 months. Frankly I don't know why the QRIsk score is such an issue for diabetics being offered statins, as you...

Type 1 Getting ready for bed

Same here and it seems to be a consequence of late exercise as @In Response said. Tried everything to avoid the lows - including leaving out basal altogether - just to see what happened and still got a low at 2am! I don't want to get up at that time and spend an hour getting back in range so I...

Type 1 My blood sugar stays low for a while

Not sure if relevant but when I have a low at night it takes 2-3 times longer to come back in range than during the day. Digestion shuts down after you stop eating and needs to reboot - I can literally hear the stomach gurgling start about 30 minutes after taking some sugar for a nighttime low.

    Clarithromycin, Levemir and hypos?

If anyone has a question about interactions of drugs with each other or effects of food on drugs, type them in the Interaction Checker on drugs.com. For Clathromycin and insulin it includes this in the report: Using clarithromycin together with insulin and some other diabetes medications has...

    Glucose level and cheese

Just a note on proteins from a T1 on 50g/day carbs - for me spikes are very real and not slow. I can jump 3-4 mmol/L in an hour with an Alpro no sugars yogurt (20g protein, no carbs, no fat). Steak and cheese on the other hand spike over hours, presumably held back by fat. Last night I had a...

Could this be a game changer?

Hey, it's all sci-fi until it's not! When I got my first BG meter, sci-fi was the CGM, but here we are. You hit the nail on the head with the definition of the problem - a sensor to switch off the GRI at low BGs. But we don't need Borg nanoprobes (hi ST fans!) as we already have the sensor...

Could this be a game changer?

That's the theory - the hurdle in development is how to "suspend" an insulin that is always present and is activated by glucose, when we all have some glucose in our blood. How can you prevent all of the suspended insulin from becoming active? If it were simply the presence of glucose that...

Could this be a game changer?

You're injecting a known amount for a known effect. Current smart insulin design cannot dose like you can. It assumes that each circulating inactive insulin molecule will bind a certain number of glucose molecules (say 20) to become active (glucose sensing effect). However, in a population of...

Could this be a game changer?

But for that you'd be better off with a very fast-acting insulin that you can jab when you're eating. A smart insulin is supposed to hang around like a basal but be inactive until you trigger it - the downside is you can trigger it with non-carb spikes from exercise, stress, shock, other...

    Exhausted on keto

Just a question from a novice, but how do you know you are actually ketogenic, do you test for ketones? How many carbs are you eating? I'm on 50g/day and generate sufficient BG from proteins. I can gauge when the glucose from different protein sources will peak. Btw, I accidentally strayed into...

Could this be a game changer?

Some info on trials: there have been clinical studies for encapsulated stem-cell derived beta-cells (mostly from Viacyte, now Vertex, going back 10 years or more) but not the hypoallergenic beta-cells as these haven't been generated yet. There haven't been any trials with autoimmune suppression...

Could this be a game changer?

Not quite - when you implant foreign (non-self) cells into the body you get an immune rejection. This is caused by recognition molecules on all cells (HLAs, Rhesus factors, etc.) which the immune system uses to identify invaders. There are companies making stem cells without these recognition...

Could this be a game changer?

These ideas have been around for ages and that's al they are at the moment. Previous research such as this one from the MIT, uncovered a bunch of not unexpected risks, so hopefully the next generation will move us forward. Personally, I think the stem cell derived beta-cell solution is much...

    Tissue damage and keto-flu?

Just had my ninth Eylea injection for retinopathy and after each I immediately get sniffles and mild fever for a couple of days - I guess it's a response to the tissue damage. This time the doctor was inexperienced and jabbed me in the retina, at least it felt like it, I had a sudden searing...

    Below 4 overnight

Wish I could report back with a explanation @KennyA but I'm sure @Melgar is on the right track with those circadian rhythms, but how we get from there to individual solutions will be trial and error for a while. According to my endo, my lows (about 3.0 at 2:30 am) are due to my nighttime...
