Have any Vegetarians tried the 5:2 Diet?

    Sure are, see http://www.52fastdiet.co.uk/

Alternative veg. proteins, please--maybe protein powder?

For the record, The Vegetarian Society defines a vegetarian as: "Someone who lives on a diet of grains, pulses, nuts, seeds, vegetables and fruits with, or without, the use of dairy products and eggs. A vegetarian does not eat any meat, poultry, game, fish, shellfish* or by-products of...

Questions about protein powder and milk sugars

Low carb protein powders are available, based on milk, whey and other proteins including vegan blends. http://www.myprotein.com Lactose in milk is a disaccharide - glucose + galactose so is a concern for diabetics. If you get a good quality yoghurt it will have been fermented long enough to...

    Why should I care?

I don't think there's the evidence to say statins reduce heart attacks or similar outcomes in women at all, so you should discuss with the GP. If your total cholesterol to HDL ratio is low then your risk is low - did you get the full numbers ?

    Liver Dump/Fasting/Exercise.

Liver dump may also respond to a drop in BG levels to avoid hypo. With only 20-30 cams in circulation a bit of exercise soon sucks up the available glucose. Sent from my HTC Desire X using DCUK Forum mobile app

    Pre or Borderline Diabetic

Borderline usually means your number is just below the level at which a diagnosis would be given, so if for example 7.0 and above is diabetic and you read 6.9 then you are borderline - very close but not actually meeting the criteria. Pre-diabetes usually means having some or all of the...

First time with BG meter, how are these readings?

Not sure there is such a thing - they're all carbohydrates and milk has lactose in it (a sugar). Bacon and egg or an omelette on the other hand are zero carbohydrate.

    diabetic diets in hospital

As long as the "state of the art" in diabetic nutrition is to eat what you want and back-titrate with insulin or cover it with other meds then we can't expect sensible food choices on the menu. It is appalling that there are menu options that dictate how an animal should be slaughtered in line...

Stress and confusion over Type 1 - or maybe 2!

Write to the consultant, you'll probably get a considered and well expressed answer that will be more use than trying to remember a hurried conversation.

    Low-Carbohydrate Diets and All-Cause Mortality:

http://rawfoodsos.com/2010/09/08/brand- ... in-trouble and others have issues with the original study - not least things like the "low carb" groups having levels of carbohydrate way above what anyone sensible would call low carb. Then there's the meat eaters group having lots of smokers and...

    Is low-carb actually working?

I'm not a fan of either TBH, my low carb diet is high in fats. Lean chicken without the skin is just protein and adding a few salad things with little calories in doesn't really work as it's out of balance - too much protein, not a lot else. As an example I had zero blood sugar response to a...

    Is low-carb actually working?

most of the calories in those are from carbs, so it's not the lowest carb meal. I don't know precisely what the effect of hypothyroidism is, but the symptoms you describe point to an imbalance in the actions of glucagon and insulin in response to the meal. Perhaps your liver kicks out too much...

    HBA1C

NICE guidelines say "involve the person in decisions about their individual HbA1c target level, which may be above that of 6.5% set for people with type 2 diabetes in general" and "Consider adding a DPP-4 inhibitor (sitagliptin, vildagliptin) instead of a sulfonylurea as second-line therapy...
