    SMART INSULIN

This is what we want - kinda Byetta for type 1s :D

Which insulin is best..old or new?

The best insulin is simply the one that gives you best control - that being a balance of HbA1c, hypo awareness/frequency/severity, weight and quality of life. We're all individuals and the only way to find which works best for you is to try them. Be aware of the potential problems (otherwise...

    Carbs in a salad

Protein also raises blood sugar. Don't know if there's an easy way to estimate/calculate carbs for this - maybe fergus knows?

    Carbs to Insulin !!

As handadr said, it varies for each person. Also varies with time of day so take this into account when experimenting. I usually need 1.5 units for 10 carbs at bfast and 1 for 10 rest of the day but this varies with menstrual cycle. Start by assuming 1:10 and then adjust, you'll only find out...

Glucose Tolerance Test - what does it show?

Sorry can't help but I wanna know the answer. My practice nurse asked why I hadn't had one "recently" (ever) and tried to perusade me to have one. She keeps wanting to do unnecessary tests so I suspect its more about earning a fee than my health. I think it'll just confirm that my bs goes...

    Blood sugar still high

Ketones tends to suggest type 1 or LADA but type 2s can get them, especially if bs gets very high before diagnosis. You're not too old for type 1, it can start at any age from about 3 months to 70+. Not all type 2s are overweight either. Although many type 2s are overweight and type 1...

    DVLA and blood testing.

Guess you have to take a lot of short breaks (test, drive there, stay a few days, test, drive back) Or it just proves how wrong the NHS are about testing.

    Am I diabetic?

If you'd been sleeping a lot of the time and not drinking regularly then maybe you were a bit dehydrated, hence the lemonade helped. If you were diabetic, the sugar in the lemonade would've made you feel worse not better (unless it was diet). Thyroid problems can also cause extreme tiredness.

    to you type 1 diabetics

That's really scary. Sad that things don't seem to have improved over the years.

    Blood sugar still high

Have they done any tests (ketones, C-peptides) regarding what type you are, or are they just waiting to see if you go into DKA? Sometimes they seem to decide by the colour of your socks! If you're a true type 1 then oral meds won't work, you'll need to inject insulin. Have no experience of...

    Colds and Type 1 diabetes

Hi Nomi Sounds unusual, but viruses are funny things. Some raise blood pressure but some reduce it, or make you more sensitive to medication, so I guess this could apply to blood sugar as well. Other suggestions are maybe be your cold is now clearing up and you don't need the extra insulin...

    Strips/prescription advice

Hi Aaron Stuboy is absolutely right. Your wife's testing appropriately. Unfortunately PCTs/practice managers see test strips as a way to cut costs, especially after a study said effectively type 2 diabetics don't benefit from testing (was a very poor study). They just remember "diabetics...

    No longer diabetic.....

I think you're probably type 2 or one of the 'in between 1 & 2' types. Type 2 was less common in teenagers 7-8 years ago than now so maybe they assumed you were type 1 due to your age and relatively acute presentation. Possibly type 1 with an unusually late and prolonged honeymoon period...

New to the site - not so new to diabetes

Sounds to me like you've slept through a hypo, and your liver has dumped glucose as a result. They always say you'd wake up if hypo at night, but I'm living proof that some don't. When this happens it affects daytime control too. If this is happening, increasing the dose will start a vicious...

    School advice

HI Alba37 Make sure they also understand that hypos must be treated promptly and his symptoms (high or low) are part of his condition, even with careful planning they will happen sometimes and are not his fault. If your son takes his insulin before official lunchtime starts, how long is it...

    to you type 1 diabetics

No idea what my level was (was years before fingerprick tests) but they said I'd have been in a coma very soon. It was b****y obvious I was ill, except to my GP who despite my symptoms (the typical ones) said I was fine and my mum was just being fussy!

Anyone know the answer on "topping up"?

I think this is one of the loopholes people have pointed out to NICE as part of the top up debate. Meters have never been free as of right (only if you're lucky and your DSN or meter manufacturer gives you one) but it has never been seriously proposed that Type 1s don't need test strips. When...

    Not recognising hypos!

Hi I don't know if it actually harms the liver to keep on dumping glucose, but I wouldn't rely on it any more than you have to. Firstly if you routinely don't react to (treat) the early warning signs of a hypo, you'll stop getting the early signs (ie unaware of hypo until really low). You...

    employment

Hi Geoff About a year ago a Cardiologist (and private pilot) who did CAA pilot medicals told me the rules had changed, diabetics on insulin could fly solo. I checked the FAA website, which said you had to keep a meter strapped to your leg and test frequently during flight (every 15 mins I...

    I'm a type2!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Maxangel In addition to what others have said, I'd point out many type 2s will do anything to avoid going onto insulin, and for some using insulin has implications for their job. So the doctor who wrote to you probably assumes you'd rather avoid it. Suggest you make your preferences...
