Should I be worried about nephropathy?

Hi Sophia! To be honest, I can't say whether it's normal or not, but I got told about 2 years ago that there were some problems with my kidneys after I had a blood test at my checkup. I panicked for months, but when I went back they said everything was back to normal, so I presume that they do...

    Type1 newly diagnosed and struggling

Hi Fiona! God that's a shock to your system, I'm lucky in a way I was diagnosed at 4 so I've grown up with it. I can't imagine what you're going through, and everyone works their diabetes differently, so it's confusing. Main thing is, you can eat normally. Just like you were before, but try to...

    False Hypos??

I have some background retinopathy but it hasn't affected my eyesight that I can tell! I was young too, 4 when diagnosed, nearly 22 now. I'm just getting out of the rebellious stage where you're trying to be like everyone else ha! Sadly your body chemistry doesn't change instantaneously, it...

    False Hypos??

@Circuspony did you get any symptoms when you were going really high/unreadable? I noticed that it works the other way too, that if you're high for a long time there's a much higher threshold for when you start feeling the symptoms? I would have to be above 20 for me to start even feeling thirsty!

    False Hypos??

https://www.freestylelibre.co.uk/libre/products.html The really good thing about this is that it uses the information it's collected over the last few minutes to tell you whether your sugars are going up or down, and how fast :)

    False Hypos??

Maybe consider going on a CGM device, Continuous Glucose Monitoring? The Freestyle Libre has a lot of good reviews, unfortunately it's not free on the NHS yet :( I tried it but I was a bit unsure as it gave me a few inaccurate readings in the first day, apparently that's normal though, after the...

    False Hypos??

Leg cramps and wonky vision are symptoms of high readings too! I don't get the cramps a lot but when I do, they wake me up in the night, and I am one deep sleeper :P yeah they say the target values are between 4 and 7, which is the best thing to aim for really but if you are between these you...

    Diabetes and becoming a paramedic

Ah if only I was 11 years old again, I wanted to be a pilot for a long time before I got told that T1s can't!

    False Hypos??

I'm exactly the same, in that my bloods were consistently above 10 for a long time up until about a month ago. The hypo symptom can be due to your blood sugars being lower than your body has become used to, I feel the same, sometimes I start to feel sleepy and warm, i've tested and I've been in...

    Eyesight!

@Circuspony wonky eyesight pretty much comes with high blood sugar readings, as it damages the blood vessels at the back of the eyes. Your readings will settle down soon provided you do the right insulin dose for your carb intake etc, have you had what they call a "honeymoon" period? Where...

    Frequency of hypos

Haha thanks, getting there slowly but surely!

    Frequency of hypos

Quite variable for me too, but I've only really recently started monitoring consistently. For me, 4-7 hypos per week, but I'm working for less. These are readings between 3 and 4mmol. I've been T1 for 17 years. It does depend on your activity and exercise, carb and insulin intake. I've found...

    A few Q's from a newly diagnosed T1

I wouldn't recommend correcting 1u for every 2.5mmol above 7... yes it's what I do but never before bed. If you correct that much before bed, you're likely to wake up hypo a few hours later because you won't have eaten anything to counter the insulin in your system once you drop below 7. That's...

    Should I be more worried

Ah but you can actively try to avoid the biting, whereas crossing the street is inevitable.

Levemir split dose - am I weird?

Tresiba has been fantastic for me, one injection daily and the main advantage is that it lasts longer than Lantus which was giving me highs when it ran out after 22 hours. The pens are easy to use as well, I mean they all are to some extent but I find Tresiba's delivery system much more... shall...

explaining what it's really like to live with Type 1

@Snapsy to be honest right now I'm almost crying! I've had T1 since I was 4 (1999), now I'm nearly 22 and living with three other people, none of whom have the slightest idea. It's so hard, and this post has summed up exactly how I feel. I've struggled to control it myself for years, and have...
