    Dexcom NHS

From reading this forum it appears that the Freestyle CGM has a bunch of significant problems, particularly with accuracy. If this is what’s happening, why wouldn’t NHS being going full speed ahead to switch patients to the Dexcom? Inaccurate readings lead to more control problems and that’s bad...

Self-management of Type 1 in hospital?

Maybe I should amend my previous comment about the U.S. being in the Dark Ages in comparison to the UK. On the one hand NHS has a policy that allows for self-management but on the other it seems like hospital personnel are not overly concerned about the consequences to them of not providing...

    Blood Glucose testing

^ I haven’t heard about that. The alcohol evaporates pretty quickly in any case.

I need 3000 calories per day

3,000 calories a day doesn’t sound especially high to me if that’s what your body needs based on your activities, If all your numbers look good at that level and your weight is where you want it, I don’t see a problem. Many of us need fewer calories and that’s okay too.

    Blood Glucose testing

^Lazy maybe but okay lazy, if there is such a thing.

    Blood Glucose testing

You can use an alcohol swab as needed. I usually don’t wash my hands prior to a finger prick but if I have any doubts I’ll do that or use a swab if I’m out. Infections are unlikely but still possible.

    LANTUS insulin

Well, I hope you get it figured out, whether it’s the timing or the dosage or both. It sounds like you’re having some serious insulin reactions right in the middle of the day, which is often after many people have eaten lunch. Mealtimes can cause a lot of trouble all by themselves.

Discussion New avenue for a Type 1 cure

The research write-up covers this question. They seem to have figured out how to interrupt the process by which the immune system is triggered to attack our own beta cells. (With this cure, these would be stem cells taken from our own pancreas and programmed to act as beta cells instead of other...

Discussion New avenue for a Type 1 cure

These are not embryonic stem cells so I wouldn’t foresee any ethical stem cell issues. Another advantage of this approach.

    Complications 15 years after diagnosis?

I agree with EllieM that your control is excellent based on your numbers. None of us with Type 1 could hope for anything better. As for whether the retinopathy or possible neuropathy is normal, you might want to look up the latest statistics. I doubt it’s completely abnormal. It certainly wasn’t...

Discussion New avenue for a Type 1 cure

I was sent the following article from this very site: https://www.diabetes.co.uk/news/2022/aug/new-insulin-regeneration-pathway-a-potential-treatment-option-for-type-1-diabetes.html This approach to a cure for Type 1 looks very promising to me and my doctor. I sent him the linked research paper...

    LANTUS insulin

How do you know that your liver is “pumping out glucose” at 3 pm? Lots of things can cause a spike without your liver getting involved. This usually doesn’t happen unless there’s a sudden and fairly severe drop in blood sugar which isn’t immediately treated. Even then, it doesn’t always happen...

Do you feel that diabetes affects your social performance?

I’d be curious to know how high is too high and how low is too low. Low blood sugar can definitely affect mood and I generally treat it before that’s a problem. The specific effect you mention isn’t one I’ve experienced due to high or low blood sugar, except that with very high blood sugar your...

    Mastering Diabetes

So, not to get into the diet debate but it does seem like some of these promoted approaches to food with Type 1 with names like Mastering Diabetes do have some kernel of validity to them. Then again, some go to extremes and have questionable science behind them. Also, of course, there is the...

My mother is mismanaging her diabetes and I´m at the end of my rope

Yikes and double yikes! I agree that as you say you coulda shoulda have sought help for this situation long ago. But now would be a good time too. You mentioned a TBI (traumatic brain injury). This is possibly a complicating factor in finding the right people to assist you. TBIs typically...

    Verbal alarms on dexcom?

I haven’t even tried CGM and I already think that. CGM has definite advantages in certain situations, no question. But there are a bunch ot tradeoffs versus conventional blood sugar testing and I think every patient has to make an evaluation based on their own needs and preferences.

    Novorapid vials

Do all the chemists in town use the same supplier? Are they all out of Novorapid vials? I would call around before I got close to running low on my personal supply. Might be a spotty situation.

    Using pens .

I take it you’re rotating sites frequently to deal with this issue? Also, the last time I saw an illustration of injection sites, I remember thinking they had found some new ones since I began with this. :) Just a thought.

    Hypo Cycle Madness!

There are any number of reasons this would have happened. It’s often impossible to know why. There are even some metabolic processes affecting blood sugar that medical science doesn’t fully understand and can’t account for. Type 1 is unpredictable in many ways and see-sawing or yo-yoing, however...

    Using pens .

Do you have a choice about this? If you do, it makes sense to use whatever you’re comfortable with. My doctor tried to get me to switch to pens so I looked into it. For me, they wouldn’t be more convenient and in some ways less so. Needle size is equivalent either way, so not a decision point. I...
