    Depression, Diabetes and social interaction.

Hi @ Mark-optimistic, I just saw your post, and wanted to add my voice to the above comments - you are certainly not alone, and you will get through this. The DAFNE course would be a great idea - you'll learn a lot, and meet other T1s, as @mariposa84 has said. You'll be amazed at the positive...

    Forgetting if I took insulin?

Hi @Chloesnavy Sorry to join this post so late - but I had exactly the same issue; taking insulin becomes so routine, it's easy to forget whether you took it. I got the Timesulin cap, which has been mentioned above, which is great for telling when you last took your last insulin - however...

What friends & family should know..

There's some evidence that grapefruit increases the effectiveness of metformin - so I thought it was worth asking, in case that was the cause of your hypos!

What friends & family should know..

I see - I wonder if there is some interaction in that case - this might sound strange, but do you eat grapefruit, or drink grapefruit juice..?

What friends & family should know..

@sasharhianna93 - Also, you mention you're on other medications - I presume your doctor is fully aware of everything you're taking? - as some drugs can have an impact on how others work. It's very important that any potential interactions between drugs are taken into account.

What friends & family should know..

Hi @sasharhianna93, You raise some excellent questions - it's true that hypos are more of an issue for type 1s - but of course they do affect all diabetics, as you have experienced. Here are some links that I hope should answer your queries: https://www.diabetes.co.uk/what-is-a-hypo.html...

Hi @Bon83, Really glad to hear you've applied for the DAFNE course - I'm sure it will help a lot. I agree that the staff may not know all the detail - but one would hope you'd at least get a good pointer in the right direction! In the end, it will only be self-experimentation that will...

Hi @donnellysdogs, Thanks for sharing your experience - how interesting that it only affected you in July....perhaps something to do with the hotter weather, making you more insulin sensitive? You're absolutely right about the psychological impact of a bad hypo - associating July with hypos...

Type 2, what do I do!?!

Again, my pleasure - and you too! :)

Type 2, what do I do!?!

That's absolutely my pleasure @sasharhianna93 - you'll get through this - and yes, it's very important that those close to you know what to do if you go low (and also to recognise the symptoms of a hypo). Would be interested to hear how you get on, and as I said, just get in touch any time!

Type 2, what do I do!?!

Hi @sasharhianna93, I'm very sorry to hear of your experiences - I'm type 1, though I whole-heartedly identify with all of what you've said. Last year, I had a very bad hypo which had a lasting effect (see my post http://www.diabetes.co.uk/forum/threads/new-to-this-my-first-post.121586) so I...

    Prediabetes Recommend Protein Shakes

Hi @JayneJordon, I agree with the comments above - a lower carb diet, high in good fats, with a moderate protein intake is best - and always from natural and wholesome foods. Exercise is key to managing diabetes, and pre-diabetes - even a brisk walk every day genuinely does make a huge...

That's my pleasure @Bon83, I'm new to this forum myself, but I've noticed that many people do seem to be disappointed by the lack of information they receive from their care team - it's quite unbelievable that people can be told to take insulin, without any guidance as to the circumstances in...

Whey protein to help gain weight?

Hi @miahara, Gaining weight on a lower carb diet can be quite tricky - I'm trying to do it myself; but it can be done - you just need to find the extra calories from protein and good fats. Firstly, is there any reason for your 10kg weight loss? It may be worth having a word about this with...

newly diagnosed type 1 advice needed

Hi @jenni34, I agree with all the above comments; I would just add that, personally, while experimenting with dosages, I would prefer to stick to meals with exactly the same number of carbs, taking the same amount of insulin for each. For example, if for a couple of days, all your meals...

Hi @Bon83, I completely understand how you must have felt, and am very sorry to hear of your experience; it's very positive that you managed to identify the cause of the hypo in that case. It's a strange thing - once you've had an experience like that, the lasting effect is more routed in...

Hi @himtoo, Thank you for the kind welcome - in answer to your questions: - no, I'd taken my background in the morning - the hypo happened in the evening, after I'd got home from the gym. I take a split dose, so hadn't yet taken my evening dose; - at the time, my background insulin was...

    cholestorol and diabetes

Hi @SHROPSHIRE_LADY The way I understand it, the very fact of having diabetes puts one at a higher risk of various other health issues - so diabetics need to be especially careful to reduce any other risk factors they may have (such as cholesterol). Your cholesterol is just one of many...

Hi @azure, I suppose that's possible - and I'm sorry to hear you've experienced the same thing. I know that exercise increases the rate at which insulin acts, especially if injected in the vicinity of a muscle that's recently been exercised. I'd done a fair bit of exercise that day (more than...
