    Low Carb On A Budget?

I have eaten low carb meals before they became popular. I am a pensioner on a low income but if you shop carefully fresh food is no more expensive than the cheap processed rubbish. cabbage is relatively cheap and filling. Bu a whole one not a packet of one already shredded. Carrots contain...

Anyone With Type 1 And No Complications

60 years on insulin and still going strong. When diagnosed (I was 16) the consultant warned about what could happen if I did not follow the diet. The thought of becoming blind and/or losing my legs was terrifying. no means of testing Blood sugars in those days and I was no saint. One...

    Huge night time spike

From the graph your blood sugars dropped dramatically in the early hours. You became hypoglycaemic. When that happens your liver pours out sugar into your bloodstream, hence the spike. It has happened to me and I was told to reduce my long acting insulin. Levimir in my case.

Got my NHS prescription for Libre!

I live in Cumbria and have no idea whether that health authority has approved the Freestyle Libre. I am a pensioner with some savings that I am using to self-fund the sensors. Don't want to be without them. At least I know what my blood sugars are doing and can take the required action whereas...

    Freestyle Libre Free Shipping Code

I ordered a second batch of sensors for the Freestyle Libre a few days ago and had to complete another VAT exemption form. The good news is that it has been approved by the NHS and should be available on prescription from 1 November BUT, there is always a but, it will depend on your health...

Bad head pain & confusion after hypo?

You say that he usually wakes up with a high blood glucose. This could be due to his becoming hypo during the night. The body then releases sugar from the liver to compensate and that causes a high. The lows usually occur around 3.00 a.m. When I experience a severe hypo I often know what has...

Type 1 Been told something on holiday (upsetting) type 1 diabetic!

I have been insulin dependent for nearly 60 years. Initially injections weren't a problem as I had only one a day and blood testing wasn't possible. The kits weren't available. Now I do not like injecting in public or testing my blood glucose publicly. The Freestyle Libre overcomes the latter...

    Idiotic person judging me!!!

There is difference between injecting publicly and injecting discreetly in public. I have had type 1 diabetes for nearly 60 years and have been obliged to inject in public places but I always try to do it discreetly and have never had anyone object probably because they don't even realise what I...

    Mrs May has her chips!

I had never heard of the Libre system but it is too expensive for me though undoubtedly the cost will fall in time as it did with the cheap gadgets we now use that used to cost about £100. As for Theresa May and chips - I would only eat them if my blood sugars were very low. I live on a low carb...

    Let's have a grumble!

Mt niece, who knows I am a T1 diabetic invited me to afternoon tea on Easter Monday. I know she was being kind and thoughtful but it put me in the embarrassing position of having to refuse and explain why. I do not inject in order to consume extra carbs and any way don't like sweet things having...

    Type 1 Novorapid!!

It sounds to me as though you are taking very high doses of insulin which must mean that you are eating lots of calories and carbs otherwise you would be having hypos. You should talk to your diabetes specialists about a weight loss diet. If you have a sedentary lifestyle you need far fewer...

    Type 1 and gastric problem

I have type 1 diabetes for nearly 60 years and now have a colitis problem that is affecting the control of my diabetes. I am finding it difficult to believe that I have to wait so long to see a consultant to resolve the problem up here in Cumbria. It's a complete nightmare. I have had two...

BUT WE'VE GONE TO THE MOON!?

I became a type 1 diabetic in January 1959 after a bout of Asian flu. My mother told the consultant that her mother became a diabetic after suffering from flu and she believed this had caused me to develop the disease. (My maternal grandmother died from diabetes in 1924.) The consultant told her...

    T1 CURE...????? really

I developed type 1 in January 1959 after having Asian flu. My grandmother died from untreated diabetes in 1924 the year insulin was first used clinically. She also had flu before becoming diabetic. Through researching my family tree I have discovered that diabetes is rife on that side of the...

paddy my cat saves my life

I had a stray cat that was a great comfort after my husband died and I was on my own. He always came up to the bedroom and would lie on the bed until I settled down to sleep. He then took up a position in front of the airing cupboard where he could see me. One night I felt him on me, nudging my...

    Nocturnal hypos... anyone else...?

I suffered severe night time hypos after my husband died. It was not unusual for me to wake up, usually on the floor, to discover my bedroom wrecked, my face badly bruised and often with blood on my face, arms and legs. It was terrifying. Fortunately I was under the hospital and my consultant...

    Longest living type 1 diabetic

I was diagnosed in 1959 at the age of 16 with type 1 diabetes so I have been on insulin for 52 years. That doesn't make me the oldest but 52 years is a long time to be injecting daily and now 4 times a day. My maternal grandmother died of it in 1924. I am convinced it was sparked off by Asian...
