    Finger pricking rant

Spending three days in CCU meant they were in charge of my medication. On previous occasions I would've kept my medication with me but at that particular time needed their assistance. When taken back to the ward it was handed to their staff who obviously had no training in Type 1 care.

    Finger pricking rant

I usually manage to keep my own insulin but it isn't always possible. My basal was withheld and the next day, after a result over 20, the Diabetic Specialist had a word with my surgeon to let me go home early "to sort myself out".

    Coughing Virus

Yes, I'm asthmatic too. Never slept so much in my life.

    Coughing Virus

Yes, I've just woken up again. Only got up about two and a half hours ago too.

    Coughing Virus

Anyone else had/got this? I feel dreadful. Had it now for about five weeks and just as it seems to be getting better comes back to have another go. I gather from others who have had it that's par for the course. Even three of the doctors have had it and I've been told it usually lasts between...

    Sharps bin

You could simply stuff a bit of tissue into the recess at the back over the sharp end but as it's up inside the plastic why stick your finger up there anyway.

So that's what chocolate tastes like.

Lindt 90%. Way less sugar than a Green &Blacks.

    Improved eyesight after diagnosis?

Definitely! It was a very long time ago I was diagnosed but I can remember that after diagnosis I realised I hadn't got my glasses on but could see the wall clock the other end of the ward. I thought I would never need my glasses again but, unfortunately, after being at home for a few weeks...

Be honest, how -are- you doing?

Not sure who that last paragraph was directed at. I was also warned about hypos in regard to losing my licence though.

Be honest, how -are- you doing?

Yes, and I've been told that keeping it constantly very low (4-5) affects your hypo awareness. 5-6 is great.

Be honest, how -are- you doing?

I think they worry that keeping a constant low is going to affect your hypo awareness.

Be honest, how -are- you doing?

I've asked a couple of times for the red but always end up with blue. As long as they work I guess the colour is irrelevant.

    Type 1 becomes Type 2????

I find this very worrying coming from a diabetes nurse. Does she think that Type 1 diabetes disappears after adolescence? Or are we just supposed to die off!

    Suspect batch insulin

Thanks for that. Just checked and all good.

    Type 1 diabetes

October 1966. When England won the World Cup (not that I was interested at the age of 12).

    Biggest bugbear

Your son sounds like a wonderful little man. I remember when my boy used to make me jam sandwiches when he knew I was having a hypo. What would we have done without them"

Hospital staff urged to improve knowledge to avoid diabetes-related hospital mistakes

Thankfully my nurse is very dedicated to her job and she herself is trying to raise awareness but being held back by government funding.

Hospital staff urged to improve knowledge to avoid diabetes-related hospital mistakes

It is really worrying knowing that you can't leave your care to the professionals. As I've mentioned before on this forum, I was let out of hospital early after my triple heart bypass on the recommendation of the hospital diabetic specialist, so I could go home and get my sugar levels sorted...

Hospital staff urged to improve knowledge to avoid diabetes-related hospital mistakes

In my experience, there is very little knowledge of Type 1 by many medical staff in hospitals. My own hospital consultant has virtually admitted this to me and my local diabetic nurse recently told me that during nursing training, half a day is spent on diabetic care.

How many crabs a day do you consume?

Had to click on this purely for the thread title. All I can think about now is eating a fresh crab sandwich. I try to keep my carb intake to 120g a day and just match my insulin likewise.
