    Dr's no best!!!

Sometimes I despair at the way GPs treat their patients... what happened to *caring* about our well-being?!? 2 years is an eternity in terms of developing medical conditions - I'm pretty angry about this on your behalf actually. How dare he be so blazé about it? Do you have a history of...

    Which is best?

Well, I think you're doing a grand job! I wish both my step parents had been so involved or at least keen to learn/help as you are. Arming yourself with good information is going to be very helpful... as you say, it's difficult enough just being a parent, but when you're a step-parent it's a...

    itchy scaling skin

hehe, thank you... that really made me smile! :D I have a whole host of medical conditions and on the whole, my GP has been bloomin' awful at diagnosing/treating them. If at all possible I would recommend asking to see a specialist. Having diabetes and any other condition on top can lead to...

    Hospital Accused

Yes, I agree. I think that list is either outdated or misleading. My hospital is on the list and yet I have my feet checked once a year for appearance, pulses and nerve sensitivity at my general check-up. If I have any issue with my feet I can see the doctor or specialist nurse within a...

    Which is best?

What is the target blood sugar range that you've agreed with the doctor? I think you've hit the nail on the head when you say his mother is scared of hypos - keeping his sugar levels above 10 is not the correct or healthy way to prevent hypos from happening. I can't give you a definite...

    itchy scaling skin

There are lots of skin conditions that it could be. I have psoriasis and vitiligo and my GP surgery were pretty awful at diagnosing them. It wasn't until I was referred to the dermatology department at my local hospital that the specialist saw me and gave me a conclusive diagnosis.... and also...

    Excessive Head/Neck Sweating

I suffer from this also although I am type1. Excess sweating can be associated with diabetes but I haven't found a lot of info about it really. It's quite likely to be related to hormone levels from what I can gather. There are some things that might help so if you are really concerned about...

    Victoza (Liraglutide)

Hi Toby. I'm not sure if it's different for type1s who are on Victoza, like me, but my appetite decreased straight away and the effect of feeling full more quickly/fuller for longer was the same day as I started taking the Victoza too... that said, I also have pretty severe side effects where...

    Left hand gone numb

This happens to me at least a few times a year and at worst has lasted a couple of days. It's always my middle finger to my little finger and I've been reassured that it's not to do with my diabetes. I agree that it's likely to be a trapped nerve in the shoulder. There's a spot on top of your...

    Type 1 and Piercings.

I have type1 and I've had my lip, tongue and nipples pierced... no problems at all. I think if your sugars run high then you can have some problems with healing times and infections, but as long as you are good at keeping the piercing clean you should be fine!

    loss of hypo awareness

Hi. I seem to remember reading that kids who have type1 and are reaching adolescence/teenage can often develop new symptoms of hypos that they haven't previously experienced or they can lose the symptoms altogether like your son seems to have done. I don't know any more than that though...

    One Monitor or Two ?

Is it common for type1s to have a keytones meter? I don't think I've ever been tested for keytones... not that I can think of aside from when I was first diagnosed. Do you have a keytones meter? Do you recommend having one? I do have a quite a few issues with controlling my blood sugar...

    VICTOZA users

thank you so much edshazell! It's nice to have your kind words and encouragement! I am going to speak to the specialist nurse tomorrow just to have an update with her. I'm also worried that my various tablet medications aren't staying in my system long enough to be effective - I'm on an...

    VICTOZA users

Hi everyone. I'm type1 and I've been on victoza for nearly 4weeks now. I am on slow-release metformin for insulin resistance and PCOS and my doctor felt victoza might help bring down my very high levels of Lantus insulin and help me to lose some weight. I started out ok-ish on the 0.6 dose...

    hospital and insulin

I know this is too late but it may help for any future trips to the hospital... In my experience, the nurses on hospital wards have little detailed knowledge of diabetes and generally prefer the patient, if they are able, to do all their own monitoring and treatment of their diabetes. I am...

Why do I always collapse when ive had alcohol?

I've never had quite such dramatic effects from drinking alcohol, but I have on more than a few occasions, drunk far more than one should drink and definitely more than a type1 diabetic should drink. I know alcohol does have a habit of sending your blood sugar sky high and then dropping it way...

    Blood Testing.. How many times?

I'm sure many type1s do test this often but I'm also sure that many don't. I certainly don't test this often. I hesitate to say that you don't need to do that many tests in one day because if you feel you need to and it gives you better control, then carry on doing what you're doing. However...

    Sweaty Dia-betty!

I forgot to mention before that I suffer from this too. My internal thermostat just seems to do whatever it feels like. I can break out in a sweat all of a sudden for no apparent reason. Having a cup of tea can cause my entire head to be running with beads of sweat and going for a night out...
