    BG levels before bed

I personally wouldn't go to bed with a level that low and I know others that wouldn't either. Some people with very tight control of their blood glucose might be ok but I know I probably wouldn't be.... I'd almost certainly end up hypo. If it was me, I'd eat about 20-30g of carbs without...

    Living on own with Diabetes

Do you not have warning symptoms when your blood sugar is dropping? Or do you not wake up if you have a hypo in the night? I've lived on my own for 8 years now and it's definitely a steep learning curve at the start but you get used to it. Try not to let your condition hold you back. It...

Please change insulin needles and lancing device needles EVERY single time.

These are images I've found really quickly on google image search. It's not so much that it might hurt more with a blunter needle, but that re-using could be doing unseen damage that could become progressively worse and cause more serious problems later on. And if you're basing your judgement...

Do people feel stigmatised by wearing a wristband with the word "Diabetes" on it?

    1. If you have been told that a medical alert device would be a good idea but you choose not to wear one, then why? I do wear one - a medic alert metal bracelet that never comes off for anything. 2. Have you ever felt concerned that you are broadcasting a medical condition to people you do...

Mine is a mixture of two other names I use online - just for some variation I suppose.

50 Things To Remember As a Type 1 Diabetic

I personally have spent most of my 21 years as a type1 diabetic taking the 'wrong' things to treat a hypo and I'm still here. I was just stating the recommended treatment for hypo. I find the recommended treatment hard to do - I'd rather stuff my face until I start feeling better. But I've...

How do you clean up the blob of blood left on the end of your finger?

Aww, yes, well, it was a heart attack at the age of 27, but I'm 32 now and still alive and kicking, so yes, I'm ok, haha! Thank you!

How do you clean up the blob of blood left on the end of your finger?

always suck it off - only time I haven't is when I've been in hospital and someone else (a nurse) has been doing my blood tests and finger pricking for me - I was in no fit state to argue so I just let them wipe with alcohol swabs before and with tissue after. :)

50 Things To Remember As a Type 1 Diabetic

Thanks for all the useful tips! :) But I have to say, because I made this mistake for years, you should NOT use milk to correct a hypo. You need to use fruit juice or lucozade (or other forms of glucose like glucotabs etc) as the fat in the milk delays the action of the sugar and takes much...

    Type 1 30+ blood sugar

it's bad luck this has happened this week and not in a week's time! :dead:

    Type 1 30+ blood sugar

Right, a couple of points: I haven't tested for ketones so I don't know if I'm ++ or +++ or whatever, so I can't adjust my bolus insulin up by whichever percentage is appropriate. My supply of ketostix was binned earlier this week (of all times to decide to bin them!) when the DSN informed...

    Type 1 30+ blood sugar

update: 2 and 1/2 hours after the 31.2 reading I'm down to 20.1 now, so definitely heading in the right direction!

    Type 1 30+ blood sugar

Oh no, you didn't sound terse at all Smidge, don't worry! :) I was simply trying to explain why I seemed so determined to only take 3u every 4hours. The extra info you've given, or maybe it was just the way you put it, made it clear to me that I need to take more than that at this point. So...

    Type 1 30+ blood sugar

Thank you Smidge, that sounds like very sensible information. I think I've had all these DAFNE rules drummed into me in the last week and we haven't covered sick-days yet. So I wasn't trying to reject everyone's suggestion of taking more fast-acting insulin, and I have already taken some...

    Type 1 30+ blood sugar

thanks all for your replies so far! Sorry if I'm not explaining myself very well. I have taken 3u of Humalog extra. That's working on the assumption that 1u will decrease blood sugar by 2-3 mmol/l. I've been told by the DSN not to give more than 3u in one go if it's a 'correction dose' taken...

    Type 1 30+ blood sugar

Because the DSN and I have been monitoring my sugar levels over the last few months and the pattern has been that without any carbs or fast-acting insulin in my system, so only Lantus being present, then my blood sugars are dropping far too low when they should be staying steady, including...

    Type 1 30+ blood sugar

Actually I do need to get my Lantus level correct first and that level needs lowering, for the reasons I stated above. Once that's correct, then I can increase my fast-acting insulin to carbs ratio and hopefully get my overall blood sugar levels down. Unless the Lantus is right first, nothing...

    Type 1 30+ blood sugar

I've only been over 20 in the last 2 days, and then 30+ this evening. I'm staying at my mum's rather than on my own at my flat, and I'm not planning on going anywhere, so I'm safe enough. I've taken the first of the correction doses of Humalog that I've been advised to do, so now I'm waiting 4...

    Type 1 30+ blood sugar

My background Lantus insulin has been too high and has been making me drop too low in my sleep, meaning I have a hypo and am not waking up and my blood sugar levels are constantly rebounding backwards and forwards. We're trying to get the Lantus level right so that my bed-time reading and...

    Type 1 30+ blood sugar

Is a blood sugar over 30 dangerous in itself? In other words, should you only seek medical attention if ketone levels are high or does the blood sugar itself require some intervention? My blood sugar is currently 31.2 but I have no way of testing for ketones as the ketostix the doctor gave me...
