Dafne course, what is it about?

try googling 'DAFNE course' for information. It's a course for learning how to match insulin doses with carbs for a 'normal' way of eating.. DAFNE homepage

    Any T1's live alone?

Yep, I've lived alone for about 8 years now. It can be scary but there's no other option really. Like others have said, I keep sweet stuff to hand and always make sure there is juice in the fridge (can't stand lucozade or glucotabs!) I remember my first night at uni I had a really bad hypo in...

How old were you when you first diagnosed with type 1?? And how long do you have it??

    I was 11 and that's 21 years ago this June. :)

    Too many meds?

I take 77 tablets a week plus extra if I'm on antibiotics (I get recurring abscesses that require them). Then I have at least 56 injections a week (short & long-acting insulin plus Victoza too). And the never-ending application of creams for my psoriasis. :)

    Low carb question

I don't know what sort of levels of insulin you're taking but it can cause you to gain weight the more you take, or something along those lines anyway, I'm not sure of the exact mechanism. This happens when you become insulin resistant - but many T1s won't experience this if they're in good...

    Strawberries

I love that I can eat my fill of strawberries without really having to think about it - SUCH a nice thing to eat and SUPER nice because I don't have to worry about carbs! :p

    Leisure Discounts for Diabetics?

Not as far as I know. If you're on some benefits (I'm not saying having diabetes means you should get benefits!) then local authorities often provide a scheme for reduced fees for public sporting facilities.... I know mine does, often for other leisure activities too, but not just for people...

Fit -- but still had heart attack!

Well, quite frankly it was rather terrifying. Especially since my father had died from a heart attack the previous year at the age of 60. It apparently runs in my family. I do tend to think it would be advisable for those at higher risk, ie diabetics, to get screened for things like this so...

Fit -- but still had heart attack!

Yep, I'm T1 and had a heart attack at age 27. Very scary at any age but especially when you're not exactly in the latter stages of you life! (hopefully!!)

    Glucophage & Type 1 Diabetes

Yep, I'm type 1 and been on metformin for years now. I started on the standard tablets and then moved to the modified-release version as it's kinder on the stomach/digestive system.

    Victoza & Type 1 Diabetes

I'm type 1 and I've been prescribed Victoza. I've been on it for about a year and a half now. The first 2-3 months were hell. Horrendous sickness (nausea, vomtting &diarrhea and I could barely eat a thing. Once that had calmed down though, all was ok. I went on it because I have insulin...

Why, oh why is it that.......

Hahaha!! This made me chuckle. I take 9 different types of pill every day and I regularly do exactly the same as you. :p

    DLA

I have various mental health issues, including depression, anxiety, social anxiety and an eating disorder, plus other physical health conditions that impact on my mental health.... everything sort of combines into a big ball of not being able to cope very well with any of it - if the diabetes is...

    how low

Actually my specialist nurse said you should treat anything below 4.0 as a hypo. I told her some members of the forum only treat once it gets down to 3.5 and she flipped out and insisted I treat anything below 4. If you're new to insulin then it might take a while to get used to it...

    DLA

Erm, yes I am 32, type1 and get DLA, but not just because I have diabetes... that's not a reason to get DLA. I get it because I have severe mental health problems that interact with my diabetes control and vice versa.

Anonymous Question Running low at work

I agree with 60yearson.... chocolate is not a good thing to be eating if you are feeling low. The fat content stops your body from using the sugar quickly and effectively so it takes much longer for you to raise your blood sugar level. And as others have said, if it's happening a lot you could...

    t1d and benefits

I don't really know about making claims for benefits but I can tell you that I am type1 and I also have mental health conditions including depression, anxiety and social phobia. I receive Disability Living Allowance and ESA primarily because of the mental health conditions, but my case was...

    Finger pricker

I change mine about once a week, sometimes less often if I forget. We're supposed to change it every time according to official advice, but I know many diabetics don't. I don't think it's as bad as re-using needles when injecting which can cause problems.

    Hypos/fits

I had a fit a couple of times when having a low blood sugar during my teenage years but not since then. They always accompanied not having woken up from being asleep whilst going hypo. All other times I recognise the symptoms of the hypo and treat it before I get low enough to get to the...
