Has anyone failed to reverse their T2 on Newcastle Diet?

The link between fatty liver and T2D is interesting to say the least. I had an ultrasound in 2011 and they identified fatty liver with me - though nobody at the time discussed diabetes. That year I lost about 3 stone in order to reverse it, though with no follow-ups ( was living abroad ) I have...

    Peerless67 "Newcastle diet"

I'm pretty sure that I read somewhere that by the time of diagnosis most people have lost around 50% of their beta cells? There's a rather steep jump in blood glucose levels right before you get to the 'irreversible' diagnosis, I think. Either way it seemed in the original study that Prof Taylor...

    Peerless67 "Newcastle diet"

What I find remarkable is that your BG levels have stayed so low throughout - forgive me if you've mentioned this before but did you go for a low-carb option for your soups? Because if not then it's tremendous you've been able to keep sub 7 even while eating carbs.

    Libre Question

Thanks @Bluetit1802 - I'm just reading the rather lengthy "life with Libre" thread at the moment to get a sense of what to expect (and also how to make sure it stays on for the full two weeks!) and your contributions have already been invaluable :)

    Libre Question

That's great, thanks guys. I think I will probably give it a go using my phone as it seems to be supported (Samsung A3). I'm about to go on a three week holiday and am concerned about managing testing when I'm out and about. Seems like the Libre would be a good solution! Got to be honest...

Losing weight the old fashioned way

I'm not getting anywhere close to my minimum protein requirement. Not worried at all about eating too much

Losing weight the old fashioned way

(BTW thank you everyone for replying; in lieu of the NHS it's nice to get some guidance and practical advice from people who know what it's like to have Type2!)

Losing weight the old fashioned way

My ketone levels according to ketostix were over 10mmol/l (++++ on the test sticks) rather than the 2-5mmol/l you expect in healthy ketosis. Although ketone issues are supremely rare with Type 2, it can happen (so I understand). I also started to develop extreme thirst and urination etc - not...

Losing weight the old fashioned way

Hi @SockFiddler, I appreciate your advice and sorry if I've not been clear; not trying to be evasive! It's not as much about 'teaching the NHS a lesson' as trying to get some professional help for making such a big dietary change, as well as trying to get them to ease off on pressuring me to...

Losing weight the old fashioned way

I'd love to know what you eat daily, if you'd be kind enough to share? As mentioned above possibly a problem for me is that I don't really do breakfast, other than a quick coffee at work. I'm usually running out of the door in the morning, and get back quite late at night (stressful job). That...

Losing weight the old fashioned way

I honestly don't know how people do it! I'm eating about as much as I can stomach and still missing my target unless I load up on nuts. Most keto recipes I've seen even for dinner top out at around 500 cal (e.g.: https://www.ruled.me/instant-pot-smothered-pork-chops/). To hit maintenance (I'm...

What was your fasting blood glucose? (with some chat)

I've not been able to do it safely thus far - very much struggling to fit in enough protein (and calories in general). My appetite is completely shot so I can't rely on "eat when hungry" - on that method I'd probably only get around 700 a day. I am hoping for a referral to a dietician who can...

What was your fasting blood glucose? (with some chat)

Yep, as expected. Hopefully this will make an impression on my GP who will then support me in trying a LCHF approach

Blurry vision and feeling bit shaky

Testing your blood glucose is really important - blurry vision is apparently quite a common side effect of rapidly reducing your BG so if your results are substantially down then there is probably nothing to worry about and it will likely settle in a few days. Headaches and shakes might be keto...

Losing weight the old fashioned way

Yeah, I'm doing it to demonstrate to my GP that it doesn't work, and also because my attempt at following LCHF led to me not eating enough to the point where I was basically on Newcastle Diet levels without meaning to. Very aware of the pitfalls of Eatwell (and am seeing the consequent results...

What was your fasting blood glucose? (with some chat)

5.1 today but expecting tomorrow to be bad Am doing the NHS recommended diet for a few days to demonstrate to my GP that it's not going to result in good blood sugar control. Highs of 11mmol/l right now, higher than I've been since I started testing. I was planning on doing this all week...

Losing weight the old fashioned way

This is so helpful, thank you! I tend not to really eat breakfast (never really have) which I think is part of the problem, and due to my work my lunches tend to be short so I have to grab and go. Today I should get to about 1600 eating: Breakfast: slice of toast and 150ml milk (approx 300...

Losing weight the old fashioned way

I certainly hope so! I'm not getting enough calories at the moment and as a consequence my ketones have been far out of the range of 'nutritional' and well into 'starvation', so I'm reverting back to the NHS style eating (i.e. all grains are on the table) for about a week. Eating probably around...

    Burner Shake.

To be honest I wouldn't worry about the carb content - I think Prof Taylor might actually have addressed this somewhere on the ND website? Despite eating the carbs the low calorie element drops your BS regardless. How many is it per shake, 30g? So probably still only 100 a day? The advantage of...

    Hba1c results

This is good news Bhargavi! It means you most likely have time to turn things around before you get to the point of a T2D diagnosis. You'll soon get some great advice from the lovely people on this forum and I hope you do take it - diabetes can be very serious and I know a lot of people here...
