Disease that old and fat people get !!!

I'd have a quiet word with someone you trust at work - someone in HR or another manager. Do you have a team lead you could talk to? If you have a union rep, could you talk to them? The ideal would be that you have a quite word with someone, they have a quiet word with your manager and it all...

    Aspartame & Candarel

Back to the chemistry aspartame is a chemical compound - L-alpha-aspartyl-L-phenylalanine methyl ester Aspartame is not a brand name. Nutrasweet is a brand name for aspartame. I don't know if it is the only one. Aspartame does not contain methanol. It is a chemical compound consisting of...

Are there any weight loss products that have no side effects

I product I would NOT recommend is a high fat diet. Not to everyone at least. I still believe that if you have a high risk of heart disease you should avoid eating fat. I have a high risk factor of getting heart disease (family history in case you tell me off for believing that diabetes is a...

Are some brand's Metformin more effective than others?

The only big difference I know of - I'm not an expert by any means so it's a lay persons opinion - is between formulations. Standard release and modified release I mean. But there will be some difference between brands as they have slightly different formulations. To get a license they will...

30 seconds of frantic exercise - oh yeah!

I was listening to someone on the radio yesterday (or maybe Tuesday!) who did the study. The idea was that you did 30 sec of VERY vigorous exercise, the hardest you can do. The idea is that you give your heart a major workout. They did say that the exercise is not expected to help you lose...

Are there any weight loss products that have no side effects

The last time I heard any results of comparing the results of weight-loss plans, Rosemary Conley and Weight Watchers were the best. I can't remember where Atkins came - it was either AS good, or SLIGHTLY less good. The study recommended a good eating plan, plus exercise. Just eating...

Are there any weight loss products that have no side effects

All 'natural' weight loss products have side effects too. Not just the ones with a synthesised chemical in them. There are no quick and painless answers to losing weight - plain old diet, exercise and support seem to be the best plan!

    Aspartame & Candarel

I still don't get it. How can something 100% one thing, and also be 40% something else, 50% something else and 10% something else. Maybe my scientific education is too old. Has the world of biology and chemistry changed so much in the 13 years since I left it to work in IT? Why didn't my...

    Aspartame & Candarel

I have to say, I take Wikipedia with a pinch of salt. Especially on subjects that someone has a massive interest in what the entry says. As Wikipedia can be edited by anyone, it's easy to get it to say what you want. There is lots of evidence, and rumour too, about who has edited entries and...

    Aspartame & Candarel

Jimmac, Where did you get your information from? I'd like to read the original research. I don't get how aspartame is 10% methanol seeing as I thought it's a chemical. I may be being thick.

    Advice please

I must admit I gave up sugar in my tea when my Grandma started putting saccharine in it! I can't get used to coffee without added sweetness. Especially americanos from a proper coffee shop! Weaker coffee is OK without without a sweetener. But, what's the point :D One of my friends lived...

    HBA1c shocking news

Hi Dennis, The plan, when I switched from standard to SR metformin, was to start low and work my way up to the right dose for me. I think my DN would have put me on more than 1 a day! I'm hoping my BG levels will be OK for my next appointment. I don't think it will going by my own test...

    Advice please

To me saccharine tastes absolutely awful! I think it's one of those things you either can taste or you can't. Like vodka - I have no idea how anyone could ever drink it neat!

    Advice please

I use sweeteners. Anything that doesn't have saccharine in it. My definition of 'not so good' is any sweetener I don't like the taste of. I use Canderel or Splenda, depending on what is in the shop I'm buying it in. The little Tesco next to my work either has nothing, or Candarel. Big...

    HBA1c shocking news

I posted a great long reply to Dennis earlier this morning, but obviously didn't submit it before I left the forum! Basically I said my healthcare team are wonderful! My post must have been missleading. I was initially put onto 1 SP a day by my GP - not a diabetes expert. I usually see my...

blood testing at chemist for diabetes

Those blood tests are pharmacies aren't designed to diagnose diabetes at all. They just tell the pharmacist, or whoever is doing the test, that you need to be referred to a doctor. It's designed to make it easy for people to check if they need to see their GP.

    HBA1c shocking news

I have just switched from standard metformin to glucophage SR. I initially had a problem with coping with high BG when I first went on to it. I went from 3 * 850mg a day to 1 * 500mg glucophage SR. I saw my diabetes nurse, especially as I also had a nasty virus at the time. I saw my GP about...

Any T2s still getting enough strips on NHS?

Doczoc, How long does it take for you to get through a 100? I'm well controlled and usually test 2-3 times a week, more if there's a problem I want to keep an eye on. That makes less than 20 a month on average. Are you experimenting with finding out how much different foods affect your BG...

    Prescription changes and the law?

I get my repeats without going anywhere near the GPs surgery. I just contact the pharmacy - it's in my local supermarket so it's open 12 hours a day weekdays - tell them what I need, then come back to pick my pill up when it's ready. I usually request while I'm doing the weekly shop and when...
