    Diabetic eye screen and cataracts

@JMK1954 Thank you for your reply. Wow! That's really interesting and informative. GPs have been trying to get me on statins on and off for the last 25 years. I haven't taken a single tablet yet.

    Diabetic eye screen and cataracts

Hello, Can anyone tell me how the retinas can be viewed when there are cataracts present? I had my first diabetic eye screen last February and all was ok. On Saturday my optician told me I have an early cataract in my right eye so I am wondering what happens in future screens.

Type 2 Opting Out of Diabetic Check Ups

She handed me the leaflet that said 'Low risk' on the front. Having just posted here I did think that I should not have taken it and told her 'No, this is unacceptable'.

Type 2 Opting Out of Diabetic Check Ups

In October went to an NHS podiatrist for a diabetic foot check because my toes were feeling numb. She didn't have a foot tickler. It had been ordered but not yet arrived. She said I could have the test next time. I asked when that would be. She said October 2017.:) It's okay though. Toes are...

On Metformin now may have hypothyroidism

@Maggie/Magpie Don't worry about having to take another tablet - thyroxine- if it is prescribed for your thyroid. I wouldn't be without mine. I and others I've spoken to over the years felt the effects from the first tablet. You didn't say if you feel the cold with your thyroid symptoms but...

On Metformin now may have hypothyroidism

@Maggie/Magpie You could have a look at this website if you haven't already. http://www.thyroiduk.org.uk Also, you could try to get a copy of your test results and they should have the reference ranges. It is very common for those with an underactive thyroid to have to wait a long time for...

On Metformin now may have hypothyroidism

@Maggie/Magpie Depression can be one of the symptoms of hypothyroidism as can all of the symptoms you are having. I was diagnosed with hashimoto's hypothyroid in 2002. If you do get prescribed thyroxine it should in time make some or all of those symptoms better. They will start you off with a...

    Gum Disease and Diabetics

@DavidGrahamJones I'm glad the water pick works for you. As I said, I really liked using it on my teeth, they felt so clean, but I know it wasn't the total answer as only half my teeth are gappy enough for the jet to go through to the other side. I use tooth picks and dental floss as well. I...

    Gum Disease and Diabetics

I bought a water pick ages ago. I thought it was good. Then I saw my dental hygienist and she said they weren't worth using because the jet can't penetrate between the teeth from one side to the other. I did buy a little manual pasta maker using low carb ingredients - glucomannan powder and...

    NHS free eye tests

@Dark Horse Hi all. I'm back from the opticians. Had loads of tests, more than before. I'm glad I went. I do need new glasses and as my prescription has changed I wasn't charged for the test. An early cataract was found in my right eye. Optician said I should have a test every year due to my...

    HbA1c

HbA1c of 6.5 % and above is usually diagnosed as diabetes. Next test may be a repeat test within a couple of weeks to confirm. Looking for the NICE guidelines I've read saying this. If the result is 6.7 mmol/L this is an HbA1c of 5.8 % or 40 (IFCC) and is a non diabetic result. Welcome to the...

    NHS free eye tests

@Dark Horse Thank you so much for your helpful reply and ally1. I did have the diabetic eye screen for retinopathy in January this year and it was fine. I phoned another branch of Specsavers and explained it all to the receptionist who was very helpful. She said that it is now two years between...

    NHS free eye tests

I wonder if anyone could please tell me how often they can have a free NHS eye test. I am asking because I used to have my eyes tested yearly because of a family history of glaucoma. Last year in July I was tested and told I needed a new prescription but would have to wait 2 years for the next...

    Am I Diabetic?

Just like to say that my surgery calls an HbA1c result normal if it is under 6.5%. That's what they say over the phone and that's what is on the print out of results.
