So now we know how Theresa May is able to afford her Libre

Perhaps she is doing her bit for UK citizens who have been advised to scour the rubbish tips by brexiteer Gove? https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/michael-goves-hot-tip-hunt-for-gold-in-others-rubbish-vk60ck53p...

    Insultard to levemir

Yes, the levemir might not be as strong as other insulins eg julio rosenstock et al found that one needed 50% more levemir than glargine in a head to head comparison - so, as above, wise to see your specialist. Impressed that you are still on the penmate - do you have a lot of spares? best wishes

Liraglutide ha been studied in the LEADER trial which found that it reduced risk of death (over the study period), heart attack and stroke; -...

    Sole of feet problem (picture)

Interestingly, there is another thread on this same topic:- https://www.diabetes.co.uk/forum/threads/foot-cream.161269/ Oops -just noticed two others have posted this link here - sorry You need something to moisturise the skin; vasline will protect the skin a bit but will not moisturise it...

    Foot cream

I asked a podiatrist what she thought the best cream was - she said no big deal, just make sure that you use it regularly. I would avoid anything with lanolin in it (eg E45 cream) cos sometimes folk get sensitised to the lanolin. Flexitol heal balm is good, as is epaderm, Allpresan diabetic foot...

    C Peptide

It appears that some folk with T1DM do make a bit of insulin for a long time (assuming that the diagnosis of T1DM is correct in this study, which it probably is cos the c-peptides were not in the normal range:- http://care.diabetesjournals.org/content/diacare/early/2017/06/13/dc16-2121.full.pdf...

    C Peptide

Totally agree (I would never be patronising). The pancrreatic beta cells make c-peptide and insulin at the same time, so c-peptide is a measure of insulin made by the person, rather than insulin injected. Hence really handy in insulin treated patients, or in hypoglycaemic patients whose...

Neuropathy - reccomend vitamins & supplements

I'm sure that other studies have shown that fluctuating glucose levels cause pain, and I have certainly seen folk whose pain from neuropathy resolves when their glucose levels are improved and stabilised. Also some folk get an acute pain in a root distribution (ie a bit like shingles pain) in...

houses of parliament question time yesterday

I totally agree about the worry of drug changes; the pharmacists have been issued with guidelines on how to replace unavailable drugs. So, not only for insulin but for BP tablets, oral hypoglycaemics, etc. Generally this will probably go OK, but it is silly to take chances like this. I guess...

Neuropathy - reccomend vitamins & supplements

Hi, thanks for your advice about vitamin B group supplementation - I will take these again. But one should be aware that large doses of B6, pyridoxine, also causes neuropathy itself! Life just seems to get more complicated. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/3630649 Reading around your...

Neuropathy - reccomend vitamins & supplements

Thanks for your advice. I probably have the mixed variety - I think as you say that the evidence is more robust for the R variety, so will get that from Amazon next time. Price rise is yet another Brexit Dividend, I guess. Best wishes.

Neuropathy - reccomend vitamins & supplements

Hi, It is useful that your GP has checked B12 and thyroid levels - it would be silly to miss something so treatable; although once established, it is not generally possible to reverse the nerve damage, but one can ameliorate the pains. Vitamin D is important - cross-sectional studies show that...

    Dry Eyes and Diabetes

I did not know this before, but it looks like dry eyes are a complication of diabetes:- https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4861815/ https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8012143 Unfortunately, this knowledge adds nil to the management - sorry. best wishes

    Type one or two?

Glad that you are feeling better on insulin. On this forum, one is not allowed to give diagnoses (but I would totally agree with your conclusions from your symptoms, and DKA) and I would rarely criticise another healthcare professional cos we don't always know the full story. T1DM and age of...

    Lantus insulin

Or start a new cartridge to be on safe side? I cannot find anything on the internet about a change in Lantus; there are other varieties of insulin glargine around:- 1: Lantus - the original glargine insulin (100 units per ml) 2: Toujeo - stronger strength glargine, 300 units per ml 3...

    Canesten cream unavailable for prescription

I suspect that one tablet of fluconazole in canestan duo is not going to lead to any bother. The fluconazole is a great oral agent for thrush, but it interacts with statins to increase risk of muscle and associated kidney problems from the statin:-...

    Jaw fatigue

As you say, weak muscles that get better with rest suggest myaesthenia gravis (MG), but I am not giving a diagnosis.. The weak neck muscles which got better with a treatment for MG were something that we used to test for - I did neurology for 1 year (1986); folk would generally have slurred...

    Ulceractive Colitus & Type 2

Hi, sorry that you are having a tough time. I think that your UC is already upsetting your life big time (presuming that the metformin is not contributing to your diarrhoea); I would never tell anyone what to do, but your colitis sounds quite bad, and (sorry to be miserable) could get worse. If...

    Recent OGTT result

Agree with above - technically, one should be eating 300 gm CHO per day for 3 days prior to GTT, else the GTT results are elevated by low CHO diet before - so your GTT results could be better than they look. Technically, you have impaired glucose tolerance which is now one of the varieties of...
