I don't dismiss the fact that 70% of your patients are losing weight due to your intevention. But this is not sustainable over the long term. This is the important concept that people aren't getting. Many interventions cause short term weight loss, but when the research is done it's shown that...

This is from the National Institute of Clinical Excellence's own audit of Bariatric surgery.

Come now, I wouldn't call the 10 or so references to mata analyses, systematic reviews, and Randomised Controlled trials that I have posted "sweeping statements".

About 2,000 in every 100,000 increasing b 100 in 100,000 yearly. 10 in 100,000 is the number NICE believe the NHS can support within it's service now, however at present there is no infrastructure for a proper service. With proper funding and infrastructure the numbers of surgeries performed...

Dieticians form part of the bariatric service. The problem with this idea is that dieticians have been shown to also have poor results when dealing with obesity. There is always choice Sue, and bariatric surgery isn't the only choice you can make. But if you are going to make a choice about...

    Obesity Survey

The 1 in 100,000 is 1 in 100,000 of the population, not 1 in 100,000 obese people. NICE have recommended that the service should treat 10 in 100,000 The NHS have recently added bariatric surgery to its list of funding priorities (in Wales) but wheels turn slow. Some PCTs in England already run...

Doctors are selling it because the NHS isn't funding it appropriately yet. It's a good price though, less than £1,000 per year of extended life.

Sue, without prickling your sensitivities a bit (and I sincerely don't wish to), the price for giving someone false hope is their early death. For every 100 people that get's talked into trying to conquer their obsesity by diet and exercize alone, 95 will die an early death as a result. Those...

    Obesity Survey

NICE have determined the NHS can provide a bariatric service for 10 in 100,000 population within 5 years. England is currently funding 3 in 100,000, Wales is 1 in 100,000.

I sincerely hope you are one of the 5% I must point out too that I'm not anti-diet, especially when you need to lower your BM, I just feel people shouldn't be sold false hope about solving their obesity. There is a lot of false hope in the world of obesity! ... Fizz

    Obesity Survey

Hi Sue Indeed, 5% will have kept their weight off after 10 years, so you'll always find some people doing well on diets. For me personally, these odds are too long. that means that if I continue to diet I'm 95% likely to be the same weight or more when I'm 51 (if i live that long)

    Obesity Survey

Hi Ally I hear what you are saying but all the studies show a regime of exercize and diet does not combat obesity. i agree we should all adopt this as a healthier lifestyle, and to shed some weight if you are "overweight", but it doesn't help obesity in the long term. This is one of the...

Indeed they don't. The bodies who make decisions on where money is spent in the NHS have a political agenda, they admit that they don't believe decisions about funding should be made on technical merit (i.e how good atreatment it is and how many people it will help). they believe funding should...

    Obesity Survey

Hi Cath I think this government grossly underspends on research and education, but don't get me started on politics I'll be up all night! :D Anyone with a BMI over 40 (or 35 with comorbidities) is desperate whether they realise it or not. A 40 year old person with BMI of 40 has already lost 8...

    Obesity Survey

LOL, me too! I did read a paper that showed thin people overestimate the food they have eaten in the day, and obese people underestimate it. I think there's some truth in this, but I also agree that different people can consume vastly different amounts, but this doen't make any difference. Your...

    Obesity Survey

These are the people who have other (pychological) issues, they are the ones that cannot be helped by bariatric surgery ... hence the screening. they are not the normal profile for obesity. Call it lack of satiety then, though we are now debating semantics. If they're sated they won't eat, they...

    Obesity Survey

12 this year, which is far short of the 350 recommended in the NICE guidlines! Indeed, people eat too much and often the wrong types of food. I've spoken to dieticians whose role is invaluable in the NHS for a variety of roles, but the evidence shows that their intervention has liitle impact on...

Hi Trim Thanks for the good luck, I'll be glad to get them out of the way. If I don't get a pay packet soon I'll be sending the kids to school with two left shoes on. I must confess I don't know much about this procedure. I think I remember seeing or hearing reference to it. I'll definitely...
