    Milkshake Tax

Hmm, a tax on things you don’t like? Be careful what you wish for! If you tax one food then it becomes simpler to tax others, for example, there is talk of taxing meat, and how would that go down with the majority on this site? Personally I am in favour of better education but that is not likely...

    Help lowering HbA1C!

My initial A1c was also 5.9, and I have found that it has been difficult to reduce that to non diabetic levels. You have probably had elevated BG levels for years and not known it. So it might take some time to reduce your BGs. As your A1c came after less than 3 months after you started low...

    Freestyle lite vs Contour Next

I recently compared the Contour Next with three other meters over about 30 readings each. The Contour in each case averaged about 0.5 mmol higher than the other meters. I settled on the Tee 2 as the strips are the cheapest. About half the price of the Contour strips.

    Carb Cycling

I was on holiday in the USA last month. Going on the food on offer for Breakfast and Dinner (skipped lunch every day) I would say that the average person eats far more than can be good for them. Huge portions, plus Carbs, carbs and more carbs! All low fat, high sugar. Good food was difficult to...

    wow....

I am well aware that you are vegan, but as a T1 you can use insulin to cover any carbs you eat. I know that you and a few T1s on this forum are vegan and that is your choice. However your 80g carbs is four times my max daily intake. If I go over my usual 20g carbs in a day it will quickly show...

    wow....

Agree that low carb is the way to go for some people, but there are many reasons for eating carbs. Religious, not eating meat, not able to eat meat etc. Personally, I dislike taking drugs unless essential, so will be sticking to low carb.

    wow....

A Magic Bullet? If it works in the real world, i.e. for you and me, then it could indeed be a game changer. I just hope it will be affordable for all who need it.

They Are Trying To Make Me Sick or Worse

Since I reduced my carbs to about a tenth of my former intake, I fart a lot less, and when I do they no longer smell! So around here I have created my own clean air zone - my bit for the environment.

They Are Trying To Make Me Sick or Worse

One thing that is overlooked by the eat less meat, eat more nuts, tofu etc, is the environmental cost of the production of these products. The destruction of the rain forests in South America, where almost half the world’s soya is grown is conveniently forgotten. Not to mention the cost of...

Cramping in the front of my legs

As I no longer eat processed foods, my salt intake has dropped, and I used to get bad cramp in my legs. I now add salt to my meals, and if I get the amount correct (it takes more than you might think!) the cramp disappears. I also had (have) plantar fasciitis in both heels. It has taken about...

    Type 2 Ice cream

Last year I went on holiday to Italy, home of fabulous ice cream, and naturally had a few. My BS did not seem to be affected at the time, not too dissimilar from my usual readings. I also had some pasta meals, but not many. However, my HbA1c a couple of months later was several points up. I'm...

    Food labelling rant

I've just returned from my hols in the USA, found the labelling difficult to interpret on the packets. For example, I bought some 92% chocolate, the carbs breakdown is as follows for a serving(!) of 34g: Total carb 10G Dietary Fiber 4g Total sugars 2g Incl Added Sugars 2g I think it works out...

    Neuropathy AFTER gaining control?

Hi, my Doctor told me my vit D levels were low a few months ago, told me to take a supplement. I took a multivitamin tablet but after a month or two I started to get tingling in my fingers and arms. I saw a report in I think Which, that said too much of some vits can cause tingling in...

Always good to read such an inspirational post, I just wish more HCP's would come on board, then many T2s could follow your example! Well done!

Hi @Silverback-381 And welcome to the forum. I am sorry to hear of the loss of your wife, she sounds like she was one fine lady. Your family will be a great help to you, I'm sure. As to the diabetes I am the same age, height and weight as you, I was Dx'd with Pre diabetes nearly three years...

    45 mile walk

Now that is what I call a success story! And a superb area to do a long walk. How about the Pembrokeshire Coastal path - about 190 miles I think!!!

    Different meters different readings

Hi Scott, Thanks for the full explanation, I am aware of the limitations of the BG meters, I decided to ditch the Contour after nearly three years, not because of absolute accuracy, it does give “expected” results, but largely because of the cost of the strips. Full price is about £20 per 50...

    Different meters different readings

I have accumulated a total of four meters over the past three years, one of which is a Contour Next, which I used as my main meter. However I have stopped using it as it consistently read about 0.5 mmol higher than the other 3. This was especially true of the fasting BGs, where it would be up...

Am I diabetic due to dawn phenomenon ?

Hi @stuffedolive , your situation is similar to mine. FBG in the low 6's, pre evening meal BG around 5, 2 hrs after, usually mid 5's. On the odd occasion that I have tested in the wee small hours, (about 4 - 5 AM) BG has been mid 5's. Only vary rarely do I go above 7 FBG. Predicted A1c is about...
