Is Dr Unwin the nicest person on the planet?

Just sent the link to my Mum.

    Cheaper Cuts of Meat

They belong to the Queen. A couple of immigrants thought they'd lucked in locally but got arrested after killing a couple for food. Word spread quickly and the majestic fleet is still gracing the local river.

    Cheaper Cuts of Meat

Yes, I saw the price of oxtail yesterday at my excellent butchers. £15 for 1.5kg. It's cheaper to buy rump steak at £8 a kilo. I love lamb shank too and that's too much for a great chunk of bone as well. Luckily beef shin is still cheap.

    Sounds yummy. Thank you.

Yep & Yep. I use chicken feet & cow heels exclusively for broth. Pigs trotters just hang aound in the stew until the cartilage falls off the bones and I just pick those out as and when.

Some doctors are incredibly unaware of the basics of diabetes

Not yet. But seeing my rheumatology consultant (or his Registrar) for my bi-monthly 4 1/2 mins on Friday and will try to bend his ear.

Oh no! What a crime! Pig cheeks are the best part of a pig. My Dad always swore at my mum when he found out the pigs cheeks were left in the pot for brawn. Brought up on home-skinned rabbit & hand-plucked pheasant (both with lead pellets), brawn, scrag end, stuffed pigs hearts, pig & lambs...

    Prof Tim Noakes

There are written parts 1-6 (It's the insulin...) on the Noakes Foundation website but they just go into the historical background in more depth with more references. No soundbites from Prof. Noakes; you get the full story as far as possible.

If roasted meat is tough, it generally boils down to a lack of resting the meat. Don't carve (hard to resist the temptation, I know) for 20 mins.

    Best oil for cooking

Seed oils don't do as well as saturated fats for frying, they generate more nasties. I like ghee and home rendered lard - lard is more neutral than duck fat for my taste buds.

    Ill food

Japanese stores, healthfood stores, Tesco's world aisle... Didn't agree with me when I tried the Clearspring version but I love it.

    Why no weight loss?

Best tip for low-carb dieting. Buy a tape measure. You tend to still see movement there rather than on the scales. Use at least 4 measurement sites and add the results. Far more motivating.

@Brunneria I found this on my travels - his attempts at jokes have awful timing but the information is interesting especially about quality of protein, the benefit of exercise with adequate protein for fat loss and LBM preservation, and the importance of breakfast protein. A good adjunct to low...

Yes, most anecdotes have to be taken with a large tablespoon of salt. A pointer for research and perhaps a small tryout, n=1. Seems true for most dietary regimes on the net, raw fruitarian through all colours to carnivore. Not all sites are bad though, ketogenic forums .com discuss and except...

Thanks. Very helpful. One does have to dig into the science to validate the blogosphere and anectdotal evidence - all is not simple. I'm not losing weight either :) ; an aim but not a focus atm. After only a couple of days of lots of protein, I'm massively up in scale weight (glycogen storage...

Hi all. Although we focus on keeping blood sugar rises to a minimum and they are easy to measure, reducing circulating insulin levels seems to be advisable. Processing carbohydrates raises blood glucose levels necessitating a release of insulin to prevent them rising too high. Protein also...

    Not losing any weight.

Careful on the cheese & cream. Easy to stack up lots as they're quite dense, energy-wise. Harder to eat huge volumes of green veg, eggs & meat and butter.
