Feel like I’m banging my head against a wall!

Rant away, at least you will be listened to and advised in many ways here! Life is a hard enough journey without having to fight the system as well. My two pennyworth would be to keep on testing and finding out what you can and cannot eat without spiking your BG level. It can be surprising. I...

    Ignorant people

I am struggling to think of anything I might have said which would be printable! I suppose the only polite thing I could say is that the best way to become an expert on diabetes is to get it and want to live. No excuse for bigotry from the ignorant though. The important thing is you know the...

Type 1 Is it wrong or weird to want to celebrate the day you got diagnosed?

I agree its not odd to mark the day. For me it meant a lot of odd symptoms and problems were explained, and I was able to do something about it. A relief in many ways, if not actually a reason to celebrate. I consider every day that I wake up to be a day to celebrate!

SURVEY - how much can you hold?

I do drink enough, but not excessively. I really don't know what its all about, but it has been inconvenient (pun intended) at times when I have gone once, then gone out to the shop and need to go again! I will try and spot any patterns.

SURVEY - how much can you hold?

I don't know if its my age or to do with T2, but I have seen similar daytime patterns. Always the first thing I do when I get up though. Sometimes I need to go a couple of times in an hour, then not for several hours. The need to go can be quite sudden, but I do not have prostate problems so its...

    Amazing visit to GP

Terrific! That would make me wonder what else was not on the agenda, and I would be off elsewhere pretty fast.

    Amazing visit to GP

Great news. My GP gave me the idea to come to this site, by writing the website address down for me. She also listens when I tell her what I have done. There are some getting the idea that there may be better ways than the standard advice it seems, long may it continue!

Helpful food hints, things you've learned.

Obviously do the research to find out what you can and cannot eat to keep your BG where it needs to be. But the one thing I would recommend to everyone, is when you know what is on your "can eat" list, choose things you like. It is horrible trying to stick to a diet of things you really dislike...

Did your GP fail to diagnose diabetes?

I was both unlucky and lucky. I knew something was wrong and on visits to the doctor over a few years I mentioned symptoms, but as I never had the well known thirst and frequent urination, presumably because my BG was not quite high enough and I worked in a very hot place where I needed to drink...

Is there more risk from flu with diabetes?

Flu can be nasty for anyone. Getting a flu jab is not a certain guarantee of immunity, but give yourself every chance of avoiding flu, would be my advice! I had my first flu jab this year, my first winter after diagnosis. I have had the flu many times and I certainly don't want it again, or to...

    In Hospital !!

It is easy to forget the flu is not a trivial illness. Your body has to work very hard to fight it. As others have mentioned it can drag on a while, but I feel sure you will find things improving as you feel better. Try not to let it get you down, but some depression is a common after effect of flu.

More Support, less Advice for Newbies

Its always going to be a difficult area, what to offer someone newly diagnosed. Everyone reacts to diagnosis in some way, but the clues are in what they do next. Coming here shows a desire to know something. What do they seek? Comfort, knowledge, hope? Probably all of those. Perhaps a message on...

    HbA1c, Nine Months From Diagnosis

    Great results, well done.

Feeling the need to moan !

I would be moaning too! So far I have been seeing only the diabetic specialist GP, who is so far delighted with my diet only progress, as am I. I do have a speech prepared, but no reason to use it, so far. ;)

    Doctor-Speak

They don't always need words to raise a smile. Many years ago I took my then small daughter to the surgery, with what we thought was mumps. The nurse invited us into a room, and sat my little girl on her knee to examine her and was just saying she was pretty sure it was mumps, but would get the...

    Diabetes Role Models

I have a friend who is a lifelong type 1. He lives alone on his farm, which he runs himself, and he is in his mid fifties. He has had more troubles than most people and his life is constantly hard. A physically small man, he works harder than anyone I know and is unfailingly cheerful. If even a...

    Strange Symptoms, Worry

We may not have met, but that is a benefit in some ways. We have no reason to be anything other than honest in our replies and we are all fighting the same battle. The only people that come here are interested and that is seldom found closer to home in my experience.

    Strange Symptoms, Worry

Before diagnosis, also about 9 months ago, I did not have the drink and pee symptoms. I knew something was going on as I had many symptoms but that one was missing. I would have guessed what was happening if I had that one! Since changing my diet, bowel movements have been regular and normal so...

    This Is Really Hard

I have always tried to help myself, and I have enough scientific training to do it rationally and carefully. How many people blindly trust their doctor, assuming they know best? It sounds like sense, but it could have cost me my life on one occasion. A long story I won't bore you with now, but a...

Pain in left leg and curling of small toes only when laying down

I have been using ALA for a few weeks, and it has helped. I was often unable to sleep for an hour or more on going to bed, with cramp in my toes and difficulty with getting my feet warm. Having Raynauds (fingers go cold and white with cold or even vibration) probably not helpful either. It has...
