    DIABETES AND DENTAL/GUM PROBLEM

I have to agree with Doug that I believe prescriptions should only be free to those who can't afford them. If I was earning more than enough to be comfortable, I would feel guilty about getting all my treatment and medication for free when I could pay.

    sugar

Honey on the gums works very well. It sits there and gets absorbed and it doesn't drip too much Set honey, that is, not runny honey - yuk! Think of the mess! But, as Sophia says, nothing should go in the mouth if you are unconscious. She's said the rest.

    I think I have Diabetes

'Hugs' (I can't find a hug smiley) Don't be frightened, you'll be fine. Loads of people to help, both in the real world of medics and the cyber world in here. Type one used to be called 'juvenile onset', but it is not that unusual for it to strike someone of your age. I was 17 and was...

    I think I have Diabetes

Hmmm.... Unfortunately, you will have to wait for the test results for confirmation or not, but... the much publicised 'high risk group' stuff (overweight, underactive etc) only applies to type 2 diabetes, and at your age, it is more likely to be type 1, which grabs people regardless of weight...

    insulin question

Am I right in assuming that you are doubting whether you have diabetes or not? I imagine that your treatment has been prescribed for you and the diagnosis was made because of a high blood sugar. If that is the case, there will be no doubt of the reality of the condition. And yes, if you were...

    Driving a Van

Yes. You can drive anything up to 3 1/2 tonnes. If you want to drive heavier up to 7 tonnes you have to have a medical and jump through a few hoops to get it, like your consultant seeing at least 3 months worth of BS readings (self testing ones), but it is not so hard to do. But yes, a standard...

    diabetes and general anaesethic

The hospital will usually put you on a drip of insulin/glucose mixture. At least they did two years ago. They would not do anything else. My problem with general anaesthetics is not the anaesthetic itself, that is no problem at all, and no more dangerous for us diabetics than for anyone else...

    North Kent PCT Policy Change

I can't speak for type 2s, not being one, but I'm afraid Jopar, that if you encourage type 1s to only test once a fortnight you are doing a very dangerous thing. Please check your info if you would, I'd hate anyone to take your advice and get into some serious trouble. Type 1 does not always...

    Paul Bailey AA Discrimination

Re: Discrimination I hope it does set a benchmark, Paul. It's about time people got their heads round the fact the the DDA applies to hidden disabilities as well as the obvious physical ones. It happens so much and no one knows because they don't know the disability exists, and if they do know...

my little girl complains her hands and feet hurt?

You say you keep her socks on to keep her feet warm, which is logical, but I find that having bare feet eases the pain in my toes because there is no pressure. For me that is very important. I know that my toe pain is neuropathy related after 36 years of type 1, and your daughter's is different...

    Paul Bailey AA Discrimination

Re: Discrimination That is fantastic news, Paul. Lets hope it opens the way for better protection for all of us. I do have one question though. How on earth can 'performance' be measured for an AA patrol? Surely, the time it takes to get to a breakdown is determined only by traffic, and your...

    Revoked driving licence

I'm so glad it worked out well. Some years ago with one of my routine three year checks, the DVLA sent me back a letter refusing renewal because, they said, I didn't test my BS at least twice a day!! Well, that wasn't true so I rang them and asked where on earth they got that information from...

How old were you at diagnosis?

Hba1c And I've never looked up what it stands for!

    Morning hypos...

I used to have exactly the same problem and solved it by splitting the Lantus into two doses. If you are taking it only at night, that could be the reason for your morning hypos. It is now recognised by most diabetes doctors that Lantus does not actually last the full twenty-four hours, so...

    What happened to Ken?

It's so far back I'd forgotten, but the original poster also asked if they were ok and we are told they are. The rest is their own private business.

    Inject even if sugar low?

I cannot answer your question I'm afraid, being type 1 and having almost no knowledge of type 2 treatment. But it's worth saying that a BS of 8 is not low. It is just above the 7 which is about the maximum for a non-diabetic. It's not high either, but is nothing to worry about. If your Mum was...

Where to dispose of lancets, pls?

Won't your doctor prescribe one for you? Even if he/she is not prescribing test strips (which he should be, but that's another debate) surely he would allow you a sharps box. My sharps boxes are collected by a council collector and he leaves another in its place. Magic! It means that after the...

    What happened to Ken?

I didn't know Ken or Sue, because I started using this forum after they disappeared, but... How on earth did a thread expressing concern for their wellbeing turn into a debate on whether they were good people or not? From the sound of it, of course they were. Why they went is their business...

How old were you at diagnosis?

I was 17, I'm now 53. No complications but it's been a bit of a roller coaster at times until I went on a DAFNE course a few years ago and learnt more in five days than I had in the whole last thirty years. No complications has a bit of a caveat: my toes are beginning to be a bit sensitive, so...

    how much glucose when hypo?

Hmmm... that was pretty much what I was told about 36 years ago when I was first diagnosed! Then they forgot it, now they remembered again. But there are no absolutes. You have to find what works for each of you because we all respond differently; within certain parameters that is.
