Newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes caused by steroids

Hi @Slayer Mum my sister was diagnosed T2 from a similar HbA1c after Christmas/covid/steroids/antibiotics all in the previous couple of months - she was started on Metformin, went back to her normal non-festive diet of relatively low carb and her HbA1c was back into non-diabetic range by her 3...

    Low GAD level

Hi @Kosiejelly I was started on a minimal amount of Humulin M3 when I was diagnosed (uncertainty at that time if T1 or T2), but I stopped after 3 weeks as I was immediately dipping into low 4s and having to treat before hypoing, which was frankly ridiculous! So if you are in the early stages...

    Diabetic Review

Hi @mazza 2 I would definitely ask to be referred for anti-body testing as you could well be LADA as others have suggested. Rather than paying for further tests maybe pay for a Libre to try for a fortnight, if you can't get the free trial. This will fill in all the blanks between your...

    Diabetes diagnosis

For anything diabetes-related at my surgery it is the 'diabetes nurse' that organises, prescribes, discusses results etc, the doctors do not get involved. I wanted to have a pancreatic cancer screening blood test, and the doctor was not able to arrange, the nurse had to do it. Different...

Sharing Libra data with health care team

I discuss my Libre data with the hospital team as not T2, all linked with the code given on the day I started Libre; the surgery diabetes nurse knows as much about LADA and Libre as 'the guy who works down the chip shop', but as you can download 90 days of data into a PDF via LibreView, then why...

    Disposal of sharps in Corfu

I got a couple of 0.25l sharps bins from Amazon for about £5 for holidays last year.

Sharing Libra data with health care team

@Celliwic My surgery wouldn't have a clue what the data means, so thankful they haven't tried to get involved with that! Surgery nurse should have an email address, so I suppose you could email her a downloaded pdf in advance, if you are happy for more people having a nosey, or just talk a...

Recommendations for Books on (Diabetes Related) Health and Health Improvment.

Glucose Revolution by Jessie Inchauspé - @glucosegoddess on instagram - science and hacks for everyone, and works so well (imo) for those with diabetes as glucose regulation is most important for us. She has a second book Glucose Goddess Method, which I do not own yet, but has had a great reviews.

    Just a question

Hi @Speedbird as you went privately, the consultant should have sent a letter to your GP confirming the findings and what needs to happen, ie. to come under the care of a hospital team and Endo - my emailed letter was already cc.'d to me by the time I got home from the appointment. In my case...

    HBA1C on a monthly basis?

If you are spending your own money, or even my taxes ;) I'd say investing in Libre would be more useful, less/no finger-pricking and a good view of the ups and down of your daily glucose - maybe not totally accurate to the mmol, but honestly nothing is that accurate anyway. HbA1c will not let...

    Type 2 Glucose testing

Hi @Laura.x.x. welcome, even though you probably really don't want to be here eh! So basically if you don't test, how can you know what your blood glucose is doing or how different foods affect you? The NHS is so backwards in it's approach! I was given a meter by the diabetes nurse at my...

    Cake once a week

It's good to 'coat your carbs' with fats, so maybe chop some chocolates up with a couple of berries and a tablespoon or 2 of greek yogurt to minimise the BG rise, then the 30 minute walk. Better still, have a salad-based dinner beforehand and the chocs as 'pudding'; but never eat them on an...

    Cake once a week

Be warned that a lot will depend on what you ate before and when, if you did any exercise/used your muscles after eating the chocs etc, and the '2hr' may not be the end of the spike - this is where the graphs from a Libre come into their own. The 7.2 could be the peak, or coming down after a...

    Newly diagnosed

Hi @karen205 I was diagnosed when I was 51 with an HbA1c of 129.4, (you win!!), after a back ache which I though was menopause related. It's such a shock eh! I wasn't sent to hospital, just given a massive list of prescriptions, including insulin and a leaflet about driving from the diabetes...

    Cake once a week

@Rog do what you want to do! You are probably 'spiking' and having the same unseen effects as your wife, diabetic or not - spikes and sugar are not great for anyone. Although I am still in the early days of LADA/T1 I am an advocate of low carb, I already realise the mental stress this can cause...

Neurologist diagnosed with me insulin neuritis, so can it be possible to be too effective?

I was basically too scared to eat for a couple of weeks (over Christmas and New Year), and at the same time a 3 week run of minimal insulin plus Metformin, then it was low carb, <100g/day and that did it for me - it was mentally harder than physically, except on my eyes. Still is a conscious...

Neurologist diagnosed with me insulin neuritis, so can it be possible to be too effective?

I had severe eyesight complications when I dropped my HbA1c like a rock, but my sight was completely restored 2-3 months later, months/years of high BG doesn't clear from everywhere at the same pace, and with time things got back to normal for me. Did your neurologist say whether your neuritis...

    Now down to pre-diabetes

HI @wozey I am on a half dose of Metformin, having taken the full 2000mg for a couple of months, my endocrinologist said to reduce and see what happened, he suspected not a lot would change - and basically nothing did, but I am happy to continue taking the half for all the protective qualities...
