    Type 1 Trouble gaining weight?

4000 calories is a lot. I tried seriously to put on weight a while back and was hitting 3500 for a while and that was pretty exhausting. I posted here recently: http://www.diabetes.co.uk/forum/threads/low-carb-and-high-calorie.109975/ because I've found it increasingly hard to stay low carb...

    Insulin and exercise

Thanks for getting back to me. I have to be honest and say that I'm a bit confused though. You say that a non-diabetic switches off producing insulin when they exercise. My doctor said that they would still produce insulin. If they did not would they not have very high blood sugar levels after...

    Low carb and high calorie

I'm not sure that I have a proper definition of healthy. I just try and pay attention to the medical advice. I think that suggests red meat once or twice a week and limited amounts of cheese.

    Insulin and exercise

Lighter exercise has always dropped me slowly so I can only agree with this. I used to play golf occasionally and the hypos would sneak up if I wasn't careful.

    Insulin and exercise

Thanks for the detail. And thanks to everyone else for the input. When my doctor says things about just allowing myself to be 14 or so then it does make me question her more generally. I don't want to be contrary to what she says but I just want to find out what is right. Having said that she...

    I appreciate it!

    Low carb and high calorie

Yes, a meal like that would be good (although I'm unsure about how much red meat I should eat). Sounds very tasty in fact. I suppose what I'm saying is that I can't seem to find many recipes like that. Do you have any good sources or have you come up with stuff on your own? Do you think that...

    Low carb and high calorie

Thanks for the Thanks for the replies? Any particular foodstuffs that you've found useful? There seems to be such a limited range of high-calorie low-carb foods that aren't massively unhealthy. To add to this my partner is a vegetarian so when we eat together I can't even put meat in there to...

    Insulin and exercise

What really confused me was that they started talking about effects on the liver from not having any glucose. When I tried to understand what exactly they meant by this they seemed inconsistent and I could not figure out if they were, to some extent, trying to bamboozle me. Does anyone know if...

    Low carb and high calorie

I am a T1 who tries not to have too many carbs. I have recently tried to dial back the carbs a bit more but am finding it hard to not lose weight. A lot of low carb high calorie foods are pretty bad for you in other ways and there is only so much nuts and avocados I can eat (I already eat a...

    Insulin and exercise

Recently during my evening exercise I have found my blood sugars rising (which I know is not that uncommon). I have tried countering this by taking a little insulin before the exercise, which seems to keep me stable but I do have to be careful not to go low in the night. My doctor seemed to...

Hmm. Never heard of this one before!

I think that I will. Not sure about the response that I will get though.

    Rising sugars

Working out will normally raise me a bit. I tend to creep up during the day regardless of this though. I think I just can't get a LAntus dose that suits me perfectly at night and in the day. May be pumping soon. I've noticed the same thing with nuts. Nice to know it wasn't just my imagination...

Long time Type1 diabetic, first time poster

I have certainly never heard this from a doctor but its money really an issue? Surely an NHS doctor shouldn't care? Or is the issue that they get their information from people with vested interests?

    Type 1: Goals ramble

Interesting. I honestly did not realise that it was even possible to operate within such a range.

    Type 1: Goals ramble

OK, that makes sense. Although it's pretty rare that I go five hours without eating (apart from when I'm asleep of course)! Very impressive. I did not realise it was possible to be that contained. Anything in particular that you do that others do not? Very sorry to hear about your friend...

Long time Type1 diabetic, first time poster

After 15 years of knowing nobody else that is a diabetic, I am open to most conversation. Certainly the things that one doesn't get from a doctor are nice to here.

    Rising sugars

I'm a fan of the smoothie but others disagree! That's great to be able to stay flat all day as long as breakfast goes well. I have found that my blood sugars have a tendency to do their own thing during the day even if I don''t eat at all. Not sure if my body thinks it's dawn again some time in...
