    Lantus to Tresiba?

Diabetes nurse advised me to consider changing from Lantus to Tresiba yesterday, to take account of fact that Lantus doesn't last the full 24 hours. She said that it takes 7 days for Tresiba to be fully in its groove/ pattern, whereas with Lantus is it 3. It's also less flexible when one has...

Increasing basal needs - almost daily - why?

Hi, I hope someone might be able to advise me. My son was taking 10/11 units of Lantus basal for a few months. Suddenly, when the hot weather hit, he needed less and less (hypo after hypo), until we hit 6 units. That lasted about 2 weeks. Since then, he's had increasing Lantus needs to achieve...

My theory on blood sugar and developing T2

    Thanks for this. It's 3.8 :-)

My theory on blood sugar and developing T2

Oh my gosh, this is a wake up call. I only tried the libre because my son has recently acquired T1 and we had those out of date sensors. It seems I've discovered that I'm potentially at risk of T2. I will do something about it immediately, like NOW. Thanks everyone.

    Drinking alcohol? (Cider)

Hi Diabetes8, my teenage son is newly diagnosed T1D and fortunately, he discussed alcohol with me and his nursing team - didn't just go out there and drink without understanding the consequences. He'd started drinking cider - Koppaberg - just a few months before diagnosis (teenager/ party...

My theory on blood sugar and developing T2

Yeah, now you mention it, my son reads about 10% lower on average than when finger pricking. Thanks to everyone for engaging with my little blurb! What a friendly place this is :-)

My theory on blood sugar and developing T2

I do not have diabetes; my son sadly has T1. He uses Freestyle Libre and I ordered a box of 10 of the sensors a few months ago. As he progressed through them, I soon realised that they'd expired, though they still seemed to work. Abbot sent me 10 sensors to use within 2 months and I didn't...

How dangerous is a hypo during sleep

Thanks for replying! That's interesting. I find that the Lantus which my son takes at 10pm "runs out" around 7pm and his bs rises. I might ask about Tresiba. He needs an extra half unit of Lantus around 6pm, to take account of this - my solution.Looking at your A1c, it's fantastic, for someone...

How dangerous is a hypo during sleep

I am new to this. May I ask why moving from your old regime to basal/ bolus was a mistake? I don't know what treatment/ management options there are and it strikes me that, if you were on a regime that worked for you for a long time, then maybe there is not a "one size fits all." It seems that...

Do your insulin ratios change much?

My son was diagnosed a few months ago - teenager. His ratios can fluctuate a bit like yours drahawkins. I normally wait 3 days when I make changes, but SOMETIMES I don't, if for example there are too many hypos or he isn't going down to his base line/ is going up several hours after food, and...

Petition for Freestyle Libre on NHS

Ah, I see - how fascinating, thank you. I guess I don't understand why someone would take the risk of long term complications, by not managing really well. Then again, this is my son I'm talking about and I'd do almost anything to protect him and keep him safe. It's the one area of his life that...

City of Hope and Wanek Family

T1D is new to my life. I scan for what's new in research and developments a lot and there are some interesting as well as some bizarre things to be found. I'm struck by people who have had this condition for years and who say that they've been promised cures constantly, since their diagnoses...

Petition for Freestyle Libre on NHS

I've worked out what finger pricking costs the NHS compared to Libre and Libre is actually CHEAPER. This is based on what we used to use compared to what we use now - loads of lancets and testing strips basically, vs sensors and a very scant number of testing strips. Not only that, given its...

    Weather and Type 1 Diabetes

Thanks, useful to know. Very kind of you to reply to me. I must admit, when I looked at his graph on the day of his first GCSE exam, as he sat in the room waiting for the paper to be handed out, the line went straight up and up and up - and then stayed like that all afternoon until he got home...

Poor sleep could raise HbA1c levels in teenagers with type 1 diabetes

This is really helpful; thanks for sharing it. I have a 16 year old sone who became nocturnal last summer, playing on Xbox with people form the US all night and sleeping all day, for a while. He also craved food, esp sugar and put on a lot of weight. Following rapid loss of that weight in...

    Weather and Type 1 Diabetes

Hi, thank you for your help and I'd really like you to move the thread so more people might see it in the right place, please. Tonight I've watched a weird thing: return to pre-food good level after 4 hours then a sudden rise of 2 mmol half an hour later after evening Lantus and another 2 mmol...

    Weather and Type 1 Diabetes

Please can I ask those experienced people: does fluctuating temperature cause varying insulin needs? My son's insulin needs seem to change a lot. When the hot spell struck, his Lantus needs went down by 25% suddenly (to avoid hypo after hypo) and then slowly crept back up again. Humalog level...

    Type 1 Opinions please (needles)

When my son got home from hospital, after diagnosis, we had some needles initially given to us from the hospital that were great. Then we got awful ones that had a yellow label: can't recall the name of them. They were literally snapping off! We spoke to diabetes nursing team who agreed with us...
