Now the X-PERT advice is low carb, high fat

She has changed her mind, (and adopted the LCHF herself), since the debate last April that you keep referring to. So she no longer believes it is actually bad for your health. Good for her. Others would hang on out of pride and embarrassment.

    New to LCHF diet

I wouldn't give up yet. The amount of time to adapt to ketosis varies enormously from person to person. It seems those who had the highest carb diets before, can have the most difficulty. It was a good 6 weeks of fatigue and other unpleasantness in my case. But I stuck it out and was rewarded...

    Soups and stews please

Fish pie makes a great soup the next day. Just add water and blitz with stick blender. It's sort of like cullen skink -without the potatoes and with cheese - ok not very like. But good. I use grated parmesan on top of the stew in place of potatoes, it really adds to the soup.

A low GI diet may not help your blood sugar.

This little study was done "in the context of a DASH-type diet". So just how low carb was the low carb wing? Possibly not very low carb at all. In any event it is impossible to say from what is available to read. In other words, this means nothing to me.

    Advice on maintaining weight, please

http://translate.google.com/translate?sl=sv&tl=en&js=n&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&layout=2&eotf=1&u=http://annikadahlqvist.com/ It's not true that low carb diets are new for diabetes, they were used routinely for decades until the "low fat" dogma came in. I wonder if you are really getting enough...

    Fourth Nerve Palsy

I don't know about the 4th nerve, but I had Bell's palsy which involves the seventh (facial ) nerve. It was frightening when it happened, as I had never heard of it, but the doctor told me it was quite common. One side of my face was frozen for a few weeks and then the condition resolved itself...

    Leg Cramps

Magnesium and extra sea salt appear to have worked for my occasional leg cramps in the middle of the night. There was one occasion where I felt a cramp coming on, and dabbed some salt straight on my tongue. The oncoming pain subsided! I don't know what to think of that, but would like to hear...

Oopsie bread and psyllium seed husks

http://www.dietdoctor.com/lchf I bought the husks on amazon, they are pretty easy to find. I use the oopsie recipe on the link above, scroll down to recipes. It uses 1/2 tbsp of psyllium which helps the buns taste a little more bread-like. The seeds on top help too.

Foods that you thought would spike you surprisingly dont

I always wonder what people mean by "spike". It would be helpful if we gave the numbers before and after, and the timing. For me anything over 6 is too high. So a jump from 4.5 to 6 would be a spike, but so would a jump of 1 mmol/l from 5 to 6.

    Soft drinks sugar free

The occasional sugar free drink is all right for me, but if I have one every day for a few days, I start to get hungrier and want to eat more. So if you are overweight or have problems with your appetite, you should test this out. I don't drink them now, they are too much trouble.

    What have you eaten today?

http://www.tesco.com/groceries/ You can put the ingredients into the search box at the website above and check. It's sometimes a lot faster than fitday or myfitnesspal . Ground almonds are 6.5g per 100g; the other ingredients are negligible I think.

    Shell shocked

Fatigue and headaches are both common symptoms of adapting to a very low carb diet. For the headaches, try taking some seasalt (I put a dab straight on my tongue). Salt your food well. When you stop eating carbs, you pass out a lot of water and some minerals go with it which the salt will...

    'Newcastle diet' advice

An amazing achievement, Paulins, well done. Can't help thinking adding the bread back is not such a great idea, how about some more protein/fats like your doctor advised? Too many carbs is always going to be your enemy I think.

    apples

Apple slice with cheese: make sure the slice of apple is no thicker than the slice of cheese. I'm lucky to have a free source of windfalls, so I peel a thin layer of skin with a little flesh, and give the sugar water insides to someone else, or the birds.

    Dr. Bernstein carbs. A shock

About the salad, Americans count total carbohydrate including fibre, in UK we list fibre separately, so US values are often higher than ours. Bernstein is also concerned about the bulk of salad, which he calls the "Chinese restaurant effect". Even if you stretch your tummy with some zero carb...

    Dr. Bernstein carbs. A shock

As you adapt to a very low carb diet, the level of ketones you "spill" in your urine declines. Your body gets better at using them instead of losing them! So measuring ketones in your blood is a more accurate way of assessing your success. If you can't afford the blood metre/strips, you can use...
