    NHS Course Surprise.

I had a very similar experience on my DESMOND course last year. One couple became quite aggressive with the course presenters and insisted that they would continue as before with lots of home baking and stodgy food. Their minds were completely closed and the course was a waste of time and money...

    HB1AC test without fasting?

I agree with the above. Fasting is not required for HbA1c. Until recently, I always fasted for cholesterol testing but at my last appointment, I wasn't asked to fast (it was an afternoon appointment) and was told this wasn't required. (Don't know if this was a different test, a less accurate...

    How were you diagnosed??

I had no symptoms that I was aware of (although that was partly ignorance on my part) Had a routine fasting test which showed over 7, followed by a repeat a week or so later. My Doc (and others I believe) simply states that you are defined as having T2 if you have 2 fasting tests over 7. HbA1c...

Where do you buy your testing strips from?

I buy mine when I see them cheap on Ebay. I'm an experienced Ebay user and check the ratings and individual feedback comments on the sellers before I buy. Make sure seller states the expiry dates.

How high is a high BG reading

We're all different. In my case, I have convinced myself that my fasting reading was useless. I've done this by simply taking readings at one hour intervals in the morning (without eating). What I found was that a good reading at, say, 7.30am turned into a rubbish reading at, say, 10.00am. So...

NHS Scotland Diabetes On-line Records Service

Yes, I found it very confusing at first too (still do, sometimes) I thought there would be more absolutes in terms of interpreting the numbers in my results but it turns out that everyone is different, people's doctors have different opinions and their circumstances and attitudes to risk and...

    Changing GP Surgery

Well I finally got round to doing something about this and it went quite well. As some longer term members might remember, I was really getting fed up with my doctors attitude which was basically that laymen shouldn't try to educate themselves, doctor knows best, take these pills for the rest...

NHS Scotland Diabetes On-line Records Service

HI Sharonmac, Most of the graphs on the "My Diabetes, My Way" have red dotted lines on them to show the "normal" range. BP has lines at 140/80 , Total Cholesterol at 5.0, HbA1c at 7.0 There are also usually accompanying notes - just click on the blue question mark. BP suggests 130/80 rather...

Thanks for comments. Looking forward to a seat on that sofa Wiflib! Noblehead, I already use my own BG meter but the results are very simialr so I think I've gotten over my white coat. Xyzzy, I agree that BP medication is far less controversial and I will be more easily convinced to start...

Borofergie you are probably right in that her thinking was sorted BG, now lets tackle BP, etc. Her point was that it hadn't changed in about a year and a half (maybe 10 readings). I was thinking: - Well that's good....it hasn't gone up - If it was high then, why not mention it till now? - It's...

Joined the 5% club at last

Hello again, Just been to the doc and found out that I've reached the 5% club with an HbA1c of 5.7 (39)! I'm delighted and very thankful for all the advice and help received on this forum. Once again, though, totally disappointed in my doctor's reaction, a mumbled good followed by a long...

The Men Who Made Us Fat

One thing that doesn't seem to have been mentioned inthis thread yet is the question of how much is too much with sugar. Again (sorry to harp on about this) if the medical establishment doesn't accept a hypothesis (in this case that sugar is especially guilty in obesity) then it will always be...

    Music!

Well I'll be flabergasted! I thought I had a pretty wide taste in music covering many genres and decades but I confess that I have never even heard of 90% of Blindfaith's list. Sid, you missed BB King... how could you? I like most blues, most (older) country, some big band/swing jazz...

The Men Who Made Us Fat

Quite an impact for a TV programme (83 posts on here in a day) but I wonder whether it will have any effect in the health care world. One of my big problems is that the whole NHS/Health Care profession, guided by NICE, SIGN, etc is completely wedded to the original (theoretically discreditted)...

Encouraging HbA1c after less than perfect control

Hi again, I haven't been on the forum for a couple of months, so here's an update. Well after struggling through Christmas and a very depressing Scottish winter, I've got mixed progress to report. * The battle with my weight continues. After getting down to 110.6 kg in September, I was 114.0...

    Understanding Results ...please help

My GP is pretty much against giving out info to patients ("it'll only confuse and worry them") but even she printed off my results when I asked, without batting an eye. I don't think this is a problem. Just ask.
