NHS Scotland Diabetes On-line Records Service

Hi all, Sorry - I've not been on the forum for some time so didn't pick this up. I did say on one of my early posts that it seemed to take ages to set up. In my case it probably took about three months end to end including the five weeks or so it took me to get my doctor to sign the form. It...

Is this normal within the NHS these days?

It does seem to vary quite a lot. I've no other medical issues apart from overweight and high cholesterol. I'm 58. I was diagnosed at Easter and so far I've had: - A 40 minute session with the practice nurse incl urine test and a pile of NHS leaflets about diabetes - An ECG at the local...

    Tight BG control numbers

If your clinic/doctor/surgery/DSN is anything like the ones I've come across (including on my DESMOND course) you will be told that you are being far too careful (Note that I'm not saying so, everyone is entitled to tackle this the way they want). In general, the NHS seems to take the view that...

Statins. What happens if I don't take them?

Unfortunately, my GP is not open to patients' ideas on subjects like these. Even if she were, there are two further problems: - An extremely limited patient appointment (8 minutes I believe) - SIGN 116 (Scottish Clinical Guideline for dibetes, similar to NICE) which she believs she must...

Can I do anything about the dawn phenomenon?

I've stopped taking fasting readings for now. They correlation was higher with my time of getting out of bed than it was with anything I'd eaten the day before (I usually don't eat after 7 in the evening). I'm now doing more after dinner readings and these have given me a few surprises already.

    home made tablet-yummy!

I haven't tested for tablet yet but I've got a packet upstairs that I got for my birthday. Problem is that if I open it I'll finish it and I don't think that'll be very good for my BG levels :| On a similar note, I had some puff candy crunched through my ice cream the other night and my 2...

    It doesn't make sense

I'm pretty amazed at my tolerance for chocolate. It doesn't seem to hit my BG the way I thought it would. For example on Tuesday, I had shepherds pie, ice cream and half a plum crumble and a glass of wine. Tempted by the dark side I had half a bag of M&S belgian covered toffee popcorn (drool)...

    Alcohol

Yep. Agree with above. I had a too big dinner last night (1421 cals altogether including crisps and chocolate) including drinking half a bottle of prosecco plus a small glass of white (end of bottle). With this kind of calorie load, I'd expect a two hour reading over 10 but the wine brought it...

Bristol Univ study on T2 and Exercise

I've been doing a similar regime. Diabetic or not, the imnstructors at my gym all recommend varying your exercise through the session. So walk for a bit to warm up then medium gradient then maybe steep gradient, back to almost level for a jog, then steep gradient again and so on. Same with...

2 hour readings after dinner - questions

Tonight was a bit strange when I fell off the wagon (agian, I'm afraid). Total of half a bottle of wine and a feed of chocolate with my coffee. So interestingly 5.6 after 2 hours, 8.6 after 3 hours. I'm assuming the 5.6 was a result of the alcohol, and the 8.6 the underlying reading coming...

2 hour readings after dinner - questions

Thanks for these really informative comments which really do help me to put my readings in context. My intention is to concentrate on dinner readings and continue to try to get to 2 hour readings less than 8.5 (obviously lower if I can). Where suspicious, I'll take extra readings to see what's...

Phoenix, Thanks for this. This is exactly the kind of response I was hoping for. I'll read up on your link when I get the chance.

Statins. What happens if I don't take them?

Re: Statins. WhAat happens if I don't take them? Me too, if only to satisfy my doctor and eliminate the three monthly hassle. I'd emphasise the "natural" though. On the advice of my dietician (seen after diagnosis), I have been taking Omega 3 capsules ( which have no known effect on...

2 hour readings after dinner - questions

Hi East Man, I've not had a good look round the web site yet but will do. I have, however, bought and read the book and I'll re -read it over the next couple of weeks. At the moment, these targets are too strict for me and would be wholly impossible to reach without a dramatic change to my...

Type 2's: What was your fasting blood glucose in a morning?

Re: Type 2's : What was your fasting blood glucose in a morn 7.1 this morning at 8.50 This is my last routine fasting test for now as I'm going to concentrate my limited resources on after dinner readings for a while to see if I can get on top of those. My own conclusion is that fasting tests...

2 hour readings after dinner - questions

On another note but completely related, where does GI come into it. Obviously, If I eat the same amount of carbs (of very similar foods), then if they are low GI they give out their BG effects over a longer period (sometimes much longer) than would a high GI type. Yet we all talk about (and...

2 hour readings after dinner - questions

The story so far. Diagnosed at Easter and reasonably successful so far at getting HbA1c under control. have been on this forum since diagnosis, read a couple of books and been on DESMOND course. Frequently self testing but paying for my own strips. Happy that my understanding is growing and I...

    Latest hba1c

I agree - a great result! IMHO 5.6 to 5.7 is no big deal and much better than most can manage so you should be very happy. I'm a statin refuser and don't accept the cholesterol hypothesis but I'm still interested in what you or your doc thinks may have caused the increase. Has your diet...

Statins. What happens if I don't take them?

As far as I can see there are at least two completely different schools of thought within the "statin refuser" community. School one has decided that the side effects of statins are more important than the cholesterol lowering effects, maybe agree that taking any drug for thirty years is a...
