    Re: To All Members

Hi Sue, hope you don't mind me quoting you here but I thought it was worth discussing. I can't speak for anyone else, but I managed to get my waking BG level from double figures to low 5s within a week. That's quite a big step! I needed to get to basics and concentrate on just one thing...

    potato substitute?

I function quite happily at 3.9 for most of the day. 3.2 feels too low for me, I think it's a personal thing though but I've found 3.6 to be my lowest before I start feeling light headed.

    changed to low carb

It's easy peasey, isn't it? Great result!

Duh! Forgot about flax, thanks Graham.

I don't follow the 'I could be run over by a bus tomorrow' strategy towards life. For me that's just defeatist, might as well curl up and die now. I've got far too much living to do yet. :D

I really think we're on dangerous ground if we start apologising for having an intellectual debate...

Call me what you want Sid, I'm in my mid thirties, and, considering the spectre of complications I think I have every right to be careful. I'm hoping to live many more complication free years to come. I'm sorry if my precautions offend you. Perhaps you could try celebrating my individuality...

Thanks for the very considered & interesting post Phoenix. I will certainly look at Slavin's work, alas not until the weekend I'm afraid, way too much work to do! Personally I'm not overly convinced on the dietary fibre recommendations, my lipids have improved beyond measure over the last year...

    potato substitute?

Celeriac for me too. Makes great oven roasted chips too!

I just don't get it? I've dropped nutritionally sparse foods for nutritionally dense foods and that's a problem because? Can someone please tell me the secret ingredient that's found in in wheat that I can't get from far healthier sources elsewhere? It must be a secret, no one has been able to...

    Another view on low carbing.

With regard to the original article, context is vitally important. It's clear that he see's low carb as merely a tool for quick weightloss. Most body builders use ketogentic diets in the cutting phase, combined with loads of anabolics usually, then eat big in the bulking season. This then, is...

Does a low car diet reduce fasting BG ?

My experience is similar really, I'm lucky I don't seem to be plagued by dawn phenomenon or liver dumps. I'm disappointed these days with a waking BG that isn't low 4s or high 3s. As for overall control, I'm down from a Hb1AC of 10.9 to 5.3 in just 6 months, with no meds, so a low carb diet...

little changes can make a big difference

Celeriac is a great mash alternative, can be roasted with great effect too! Low carb and low GI.

feeling very depressed on low carb diet

Holland and Barratt do their own, then there are dedicated web companies. Probably best bet is an asian supermarket as Ali suggested, certainly the cheapest option anyway! I'd be reluctant to eat anything that wasn't from the food aisle to be honest!

weight loss plateau - any ideas?

The term 'complex carb' sends a shiver down my back. The number of well meaning individuals who have told me in quietly patronising tones, "No it's complex carbs that you need" I tend to use the term fibrous carbs, think it's more useful a description. Hardly perfect though!

    Home made veg curry

I think Thai/Malay type curries work well with veggies. Broccoli poached in coconut milk is delicious with some spices added!

    Breakfasts

Greek yoghurt, seeds, nuts and berries? You could flavour the yoghurt with some sweetener or da vincis syrup maybe or vanilla extract. I like it plain mind.

    Coconut fat to treat Diabetes?

Unfortunately I'm another example of 'anecdotal' evidence on this, it helped me big time. My lipid panels have improved with every test, yet according to the 'experts' my arteries should be clogging up by now.

feeling very depressed on low carb diet

I bought some pretty expensive stuff from the coconut oil company, bught it in bulk so it was cheaper. Tastes great. Haven't tried refined but the virgin stuff is so expensive now that I will do once this batch runs out!
