How bad is smoking for a Type 2 diabetic?

I would expect that smoking is particularly bad for a T2 diabetic, because of the effect on blood vessels and blood circulation. As someone who struggles greatly with my weight, it has crossed my mind at times that smoking might be the lesser evil, and if I could just live off cigars and coffee...

The day went pear shaped ….

To be honest, I think your overall numbers are going quite well, and one anomalous result might not add up to much. I think if you just keep doing what your doing, but miss the glucose tabs and sugar next time, you should be on the right track.

How long after T2 diagnosis did you start insulin

My dad does, yes. Exclusively in fact. Of course, when he was diagnosed in the 1990's I would imagine the NHS advice was even more carb based than it is now, and he will have followed doctors' advice strictly. Possibly the fact that he's very physically active kept him from complications- I...

How long after T2 diagnosis did you start insulin

My father (who, for what it's worth, lives entirely on bread, baked beans, potatoes and fruit) isn't on insulin yet, and he was diagnosed in about 1995. EDIT: Just in case there's any confusion, I'm definitely *not* saying eating these foods is advisable or even OK. I'm just saying that my...

New prediabetic - Advice on eating & snacking

Don't upset yourself unnecessarily: you aren't restricted to 'Rabbit food" as such:vlean meat and green veg will see you through. If you want to avoid the fattier cuts of meat, that's fine. Fish, tinned fish, broccoli, cabbage, pork collar, lean beef. My GP and cardiologist (both of whom are...

Weight has gone back up and I'm hungry all the time.

The classic KFC chicken with the batter pulled off is actually pretty good low-carb food. If you eat the meat and avoid the wraps it might help. You're still young, which also helps: I reckon if you just focus on cutting the carbs, you'll start feeling better. Don't worry too much about the gym...

On Chemo, is this the problem?

I suppose with something as complicated as chemo, there might be a variety of results, but my T2 diabetic dad had oral chemotherapy for chronic myeloid leukemia and it dropped his blood sugars down to the point of him having multiple hypos daily. His diabetes medication was greatly reduced in...

New prediabetic - Advice on eating & snacking

This is a bit of an odd thread as some of the posts are really quite old, but there are some inportant points still being raised: one issue I can really relate to is that of: 'I was already eating a healthy diet of fruit and wholegrains etc" or "I was eating healthy food, not processed junk"...

I'm really concerned I've been given bad advice...

I think the advice you were given is correct and sensible. The best approach for avoiding pre-diabetes is the same as the best approach for dealing with a new case of diabetes: low-carb, lose weight, exercise. There would be no advantage to an 'early' diagnosis unless it was something like a...

    Worried about eyesight

I'm T2, so your mileage may vary, but the blurry vision you get from high sugars was very reversible in my case. I thought I needed glasses before diagnosis because I was getting seriously fuzzy vision. Once I got my sugars down to a decent level, my sight came back about as sharp as ever. What...

Reactive Hypoglycemia How often you check your blood glucose level

I don't really test anymore, because I know what foods are good and bad, and I just assume my bloods are too high all the time. I'm not recommending this, and I think there's more than an element of depression in my reluctance to test. Still, obsessing over 2hr marks wasn't really doing me any...

    Blood Sugar is always low.

Well I definitely want someone with more experience to correct me if I'm wrong, but as far as I know, hypos on Metformin aren't really a thing because your liver will compensate and it's hard for you to have a serious hypo: it's more of an issue when you're on insulin or gliclazide. Certainly I...

    Blood Sugar is always low.

A quick convert as this site leans towards Brit measurements has 57 as 3.2, 182 as 10.1, 80 as 4.4 and 71 as 3.9 The low readings are a bit odd, but I wouldn't panic yet: if you're only on metformin I don't think you can go into a dangerous hypo. I myself, when losing weight and keeping my...

    Diabetics type 2 help needed

I agree with the previous comments: except for the tea, coffee and whisky, your diet is extremely high in carbohydrates. If you reduce the carbohydrates, your blood readings will improve. Eat eggs, cheese, meat, fish, green vegetables, cauliflower- that sort of thing instead.

Fried tempeh would be nice, if it's not too carby.

Type 2 Is it possible to have neuropathy in early Diabetes?

I had quite severe neuropathy at 36 years old, which was how my pre-diabetes was discovered. My doctor at the time thought my triglycerides and hyperlipidemia were more of a factor than diabetes and put me on Rosuvastatin but no diabetes medication. Along with this, I went on a fairly severe...

    Low Carb lovely bread.

That's fair: if your numbers are ok and you enjoy it, then it makes sense.

    Type 2 Pancreatic Parasites

Yes, well now basic liver flukes are quite common in Asia (I'm in Asia, for what it's worth), so I see your concern. I think you would show other symptoms after a couple of years, but I guess it's worth getting tested for flukes if possible: blood tests, fecal tests- that sort of thing to check...

    Type 2 Pancreatic Parasites

This disease seems to be rare in humans, and rare in the UK. You have evidently done more reading on this than I have, so I don't say you are wrong, but I personally would not be surprised if there is a more straightforward reason for your issues. I suppose you could start by listing the usual...

    Guardian article: Food Myths Busted

Good link: it's nice to get some competing information out there, and I'm doubly glad to see this in "The Grauniad".
