    anti-VEGF or PRP?

Curious,, after the Eylea debacle I asked my hospital if laser ablation was still a thing and heard that they didn't use lasers any more. How different NHS Trusts work is a mystery but money is key I guess.

    anti-VEGF or PRP?

Good question @Trishhh. Assuming some form of retinopathy with abnormal blood vessel growth, both treatments may work depending on the patient's history and circumstances. Using one treatment doesn't necessarily preclude switching to the other but you'll have to discuss with the doc. Anti-VEGF...

    Fasting blood glucose high....what the...???

It's a good question about how long it takes to re-establish a previous "equilibrium" that has crashed. I spent a year tweaking insulins, diet, exercise, and so on and got to a wonderful balance, except for the odd BG dip at night. My endo said to reduce daytime basal and my whole day and night...

Can a fingerprick meter be faulty? Don't know which to believe!

You need to make sure to wash and dry your fingers before doing a test - sweat and food residues can add a couple of units. On the other hand if your BG is low - that's real and possibly even lower if hands are not washed. (I sound like the matron at my old school)

    Saturated fat

From the nutrition perspective, I just don't overdo the saturates but I don't avoid them. However, (and this is just my experience) I am careful of not eating saturates on their own (cheese fests, nut fests) as this causes me to have insulin resistance with unstoppable BG spikes and insulin...

Can you survive long term as low carb but NOT in ketosis?

Gluconeogenesis from fat happens in ketosis, but I eat sufficient protein to avoid ketosis (on purpose) and protein is used in gluconeogenesis to provide glucose for glycogen and fuel for exercise. Try this experiment - eat low carb all day and then for dinner eat a pot of carb-free, high...

Can you survive long term as low carb but NOT in ketosis?

Low carb (<50g/day for the last eight years) but not in ketosis - too much of a risk/hassle for a Type 1. What I noticed very quickly was how easily protein began supplying my glucose and with the right balance of fats, I can work the whole day with very little carb intake. Glycogen will be...

Advice regarding discrepancies between Libre 2 sensor readings and blood glucose monitor readings

Just want to add that, in addition to all the effects you may see from the placement of Libre 2, the time since application (that first 24h warm-up), and a host of other possibilities, there is a purely technical issue. Abbott have published papers showing that Libre 2 reports lower that actual...

    Protien bars and Protien drinks

Good to point out the polyols - Carb Killa bars are about 20-25% polyols,, so for me (T1) they contain equivalent to 15g carbs per bar. Great for my bike ride but otherwise I'd rather have an apple.

    Diabetic eye screening

I agree it's a bit of a jump to two years, however, it depends on the context. Assuming we're talking about diabetic retinopathy, then if I've not had any indication of retinopathy and I have a "good" A1c through the year, then it's unlikely I will need another scan. If after 2 years some...

    Betachek C50 Blood Glucose Meter

Thanks a lot for this - great review and fab tips. I've recently partially reverted to BG testing as the Libre doesn't really report correctly for me (many algorithmic lows that aren't) and this device sounds like it's respectable and so much more convenient for when I'm on the road. The hint...

    Alternatives to rice

I occasionally get konjac rice, very low or zero carbs, zero fat, zero protein - essentially it's just water and fibre, so it's completely tasteless and relies on the sauce you're making for it. But it does tend to make you feel full and takes minutes to prepare. There are also konjac noodles...

    Betachek C50 Blood Glucose Meter

Does anyone here use this device? https://betachek.com/uk/blood-glucose-monitor# I'm thinking of getting one as it looks very convenient, but I can't find any independent customer reviews. Would be good to know if it's a lemon before I waste money.

Type 2 Hot Showers and affect on Blood Sugar

Good thinking - did the same to verify BG rises. In the morning it's impossible to clearly separate Dawn Phenomenon (before getting up) from Feet-on-the-Floor (for me about 45 min after getting up) and the early shower comes in between. But like you I've separated the variables by showering at...

Type 2 Hot Showers and affect on Blood Sugar

I see meters like an informed journal. CGMs are closer to a virtual reality complete with fake news and the promise of algorithmic paradise. Hopefully they will be more useful by the end of the decade. ;)

Type 2 Hot Showers and affect on Blood Sugar

Yes, I get a BG spike about 5 min after getting hit by hot water (about 2 mmol/L) and CGM rises likewise. Both remain high unless prebolused. I'm assuming its the work of those stress hormones, cortisol, epinephrine and glucagon.

Type 2 Hot Showers and affect on Blood Sugar

Yes it's real (noticed it on finger sticks too) - another one to add to the Dawn phenomenon and feet on the floor syndrome. I need about 6 units before breakfast for all of these!

    Dawn Effect and Liver BG

Hi @Goggoggog - do you treat the Dawn Phenomenon with rapid-acting or just let it be? If you do and if you also bolus for breakfast, then beware that rapid-acting insulins can still cause BG drops 4-5 hours after bolusing, depending on what you eat in between.

Diabetes user groups on Facebook being shut down

lol - there's a Netflix show here. A community dependent on drugs, corporate gangsters and billions in revenue run by a mysterious Abbot.

Diabetes user groups on Facebook being shut down

I guess all forums have some experts and some out to make trouble, with the majority just seeking advice, but the copyright issue isn't going to solve anything or help anyone - not even Abbott, so I really expect those groups to be back up and running soon.
