    Just been told to shield

I read a bmj page on QCovid and it repeatedly stated that they had found young type 2 to be more at risk than older type 2’s.

It seems they’ve changed the wording. It now says “women with previous GD are at higher risk of type 2 or undiagnosed type 2, and are therefore at high risk and should be shielded” Fair enough, but why high risk enough to shield if diabetics are not? I thought the new changes meant all...

So why GD then and not prediabetics? My anxiety would significantly ease if I didn’t feel there was a huge piece of the puzzle missing that somehow makes me incredibly vulnerable to Covid.

Why are lots of prediabetics with other risk factors not being told to shield though? Haven’t seen any posts about it!

I read that differently. I think it’s because they are aware of the risks after GD, yet many don’t have follow ups and are undiagnosed diabetics. This, coupled with another risk factor would probably push you over the edge here and get you sent a letter. Much like many diabetics have too, it seems.

It’s so bizarre. Mine if I assume type 2 includes gestational, is 46/100 and I’m to shield. Without, it’s 19/100. Apparently it’s not solely that calculator that assesses you though, it’s alongside your medical records. Of which there is no serious disease on mine. So, so strange

No idea. It doesn’t make sense. Someone said perhaps because a diagnosed diabetic is usually aware of their condition and attempting to control their condition, whereas after gestational there could be women going about daily life with undiagnosed diabetes and unruly glucose, none the wiser.

Yes, it’s England only as far as I know.

Well, my jab is booked for next week. Based on the experiences I’ve been reading, it could well be the risk of diabetes to those with historic gestational diabetes being quite a problem as we are already at risk and covid would likely exasperate this further. Combined with other factors...

    Just been told to shield

Having spent the whole afternoon reading various forums, I am still clueless. Some GP’s have claimed it’s an error! Meant for current gestational diabetes only. Someone called Diabetes UK and was told there has been a connection made between historic diabetes (gestational) and covid...

Doesn’t it? I thought due to the increased risk, and people not having follow up hba1c’s it could be a precaution, but since I had mine in August..

I just did mine, no mention of gestational diabetes on there though? Just type 1 or 2 - of which I am neither.

    Just been told to shield

Definitely! I haven’t had any info on my vaccine yet. My post partial hba1c was 30! My BMI whilst pregnant was 30/31 so perhaps that is what they have and the algorithm is using, despite it being lower now.

Errr.. I’ve been added to the new shielding list. I am not diabetic, my BMI is 22. It was 30 when I was pregnant and it was last recorded as I had suspected gestational diabetes. On my groups literally hundreds of previous GD pregnancies are reporting the same letter, but I can’t understand...

    Worried non diabetic

I know this is old but if you ever see this, just know my GP was the same! The hospital actually told me to put in a complaint about him. Whilst pregnant I had to have a blood test and happened to have a sore throat, when the results came back the GP took it upon himself to call me and ask if...

    Hairy Bikers cook book

Thanks all. I do use keto recipes sometimes but I find they are obviously loaded with fats, which can be great sometimes but my diet generally is not that high in fat either. I suppose if I could just tolerate mushrooms, aubergine or courgette.... I’d be able to broaden the horizon!
