    Insulin With Foods

I may well confuse things here.... My IC Ratio (Insulin to Carbs) is 9g to 1 unit of insulin - so assume a slice of bread (they are all different as it depends on what they're made from and how big they are) is 22g of carbs. Assume by a 2 sandwiches - thats 2 slices - so 4.8 units. As @Juicyj...

Low carb (keto) but high cholesterol.

My understanding (good grief- there is a lot of waffle in t'internet about cholesterol) is that dietary cholesterol does affect blood cholesterol to some degree, reduce dietary fats and it will reduce blood cholesterol 'a bit'. But as we age (general population) our cholesterol control can...

    CGM and your experience

Agree with others above - get one. Life changing for control and to see what the heck happens to your BG in day and over night (when you'd never normally test). Gives you more information to make changes and get more control. Dexcom or Libre? Been on Libre for many years - and know their...

    Insulin needs

The chap that runs diabettech has some really great information on his website - research into tech and medications for the type 1s (some apply to the type 2s too). He's one of the developers for AAPS (AndroidAPS HCL DIY system) and knows his stuff, so I'd recommend having a look at some of the...

    Insulin needs

Hard to pin down whats going on but there are a few possible at play that might be worth considering. There is a 'honeymoon' period (for you new types :-) ) where the beta cells are still working, you might still have a bit of that going on - from research over the years most of us still have a...

    Statins and type 1

I'm on the Atorvastatin 40mg - and running 3.9 mmol/l (from my last results) without side effects. Seems to be working ok - and means I can eat as much cheese as possible without worrying (I 'think' thats the point of them any way.....) :)

Type 1 - insulin seems to have less effect lately, really struggling

Might not be related but worth a thought - if your husband injects into the same area (or if on pump uses the same site for the cannula) he can build up insulin resistance as the subcutaneous fat starts to go like 'cotton wool' under the skin and doesn't absorb well. Try changing site to...

    CGM and your experience

CGM is life changing - can't advise you strongly enough to 'Do it' :) It will show you your patterns and help you adjust your insulin to match the highs and lows, and what to expect from food as it hits your system (try watching a pizza go in - surprising what that stuff does to your BG. Both...

    Long acting insulin query

Hi @AmyW, Couple of things that occur to me might be worth a go - possibly you have developed absorption resistance if you inject in the same site every day - try moving it to somewhere you don't normally inject (stomach, arms etc) and see if that helps - you should know after one injection as...

    Libre scans per day?

:-) Totally get that - sometime explain that I'm checking my BG if people think I want to leave / them to leave etc - but massive leap forward not having to scan, plus the alarms are life saving at night if my BG drops. Now running fully closed loop - so checking my watch less than ever, hoping...

    libre 2 sensor

The signal from L2 to Phone is Bluetooth - this can be blocked by all the usual stuff - your body, metal, the dog sitting on your phone (usually stops my L2 reading - though not during sleep obvs) etc etc. Even had the wife lying against my arm and blocking it - the other problems you get are...

BG spiking before bed and around 9 am

Hi @jordan1999b - this won't help you in the short term (@SimonP78 will help more with that), in the mid-longer term I'd recommend you talk to your diabetes team about going on a pump. Will make adjusting for the ups and downs easier and give you much better control - worth a thought next time...

    New pump user

Its brill - few differences to get it set-up and get used to how the cannulas work, but so much better than MDI If you get highs or lows at first - its cos the settings are wrong, you'll need advice from your diabetes team (and on-line are very good) to help you get them right. Once you're...

    New pump user

Congratulations on getting a pump - its life changing (13 years on pumps and never wanted to go back to injections). Was on the Omnipod Dash - great pump, easy to wear and control from the handset, and I hooked it into DIY looping (assume you'll get the loop option on the 5) - thats life...

For those of you who live alone and type 1.

I started by hooking up my Libre to an app that sends high low warnings to my watch (and wear the watch all the time). That saved me many times - if it warns me of a low at 4.5 (or whatever) I take notice and eat (I found I could sleep through my phone going off, but my watch annoys the heck...

How to work out carbs on cerials

I tend to use the MyFitnessPal app - you can specify the food down to each gram - so if you weigh 50 grams of cereal you specify 50 * 1g servings and it calculates carbs etc for you. Easiest solution I've found.

    High blood glucose levels

Hi @EllieM - Was meaning if hes consistently high across the day will need to increase insulin - yes needs to talk to his team to sort this out - either the regime needs changing to suit lifestyle, or thorough review of the current one.

    High blood glucose levels

Hi @PeterBeggs - essentially any carbs will put your BG up, and you need more insulin to bring it down again. The sugar free cookies will have carbs - so count those just the same as you would if you had sugar in your coffee (carb amounts should be on the packet for most things) You're aiming...

    High blood glucose levels

Hi @PeterBeggs, The whole carb/sugar thing is a bit confusing at first. Essentially there are lots of different types of carbohydrate (the bit we're interested in as diabetics) - Sucrose (sugar - brown, white, demerara etc and all other types are the same ), Fructose (fruit based carbs)...

    BLOOD GLUCOSE MEASUREMENT

Tim Street did some reviews of the CGM watches coming on the market. In summary - they don't work. https://www.diabettech.com/non-invasive-cgm/and-another-one-the-final-poor-cgm-smartwatch/
