    the lesser spotted MODY......

Hi Lammy, We may be a minority among diabetics but there are more of us around than you might think! -- take a look at the recent 'Newly Diagnosed with MODY' thread. I'm lucky enough not to be on insulin so can't advise on your precise issue, but MODY people often have more erratic sugar levels...

    Newly Diagnosed with MODY

Hi. An initial diagnosis of MODY may be made by a GP or clinic if there is one or more of the following features: a strong family history of diabetes (of any type), onset of diabetes in the second to fifth decade, insulin independence (although insulin may be needed for optimal control), absence...

    Newly Diagnosed with MODY

Hi -- Glycemic load of a serving of food can be calculated as its carbohydrate content measured in grams (g), multiplied by the food's GI, and divided by 100. For example, watermelon has a GI of 72. A 100-g serving of watermelon has 5 g of available carbohydrates (it contains a lot of water)...

    Newly Diagnosed with MODY

Yes, but you need to look at the glycemic LOAD. Watermelon has a high GI, but a typical serving of watermelon does not contain much carbohydrate, so the glycemic effect of eating it (and therefore its GL) is low. Good news if you like melon; bad news is you want things to be straightforward!

    Diabetes debated in Parliament

Many thanks for the link Phoenix. I've just posted it Elsewhere as well.

    Gliclazide - 4.00bs =6 hrs in A&E ?

Hi. If you are averaging 7.5 then it is quite natural that you will get hypo symptoms at 4. You may have started to get an edgy, tingly feeling a bit earlier -- that is when to take jelly babies or whatever you have to get your numbers up again. Do you take your gliclazide at lunchtime? I found...

Type 1.5 being a hassle these days

Hi Mileana -- great news that you've got things so well under control. How's the poetry nowadays?

    Lizi's granola cereal

I sprinkle a bit on yoghurt and berries and it seems to be OK, but I wouldn't risk a full serving.

    Newly Diagnosed with MODY

Those average levels are rather high. You don't want to be above 8.5 2 hours after meals, and certainly your fasting level shouldn't be over 7.5 max, ideally. With any luck they will gradually come down as your diet changes. You mentioned having lots of fruit and veg - this is one of the areas...

    Newly Diagnosed with MODY

Hi and welcome to MODY-world. I had it diagnosed 2 years ago aged 47 -- like you, I'm slim, fit, healthy, but there is T1 in the family. Have they identified the rogue gene yet? There is still a lot of basic research needing to be done on MODY. In practical terms, though, it's just a matter of...

Dr Phillip Lee MP - Try Engaging Brain

Obviously one MP makes no difference in parliament (even if you could unseat Lee, which might well not be possible). But the point is more that a campaign against Lee would be a way of raising public awareness. The problem is always trying to find a high-profile focus for informed debate about...

Dr Phillip Lee MP - Try Engaging Brain

Now that is a brilliant suggestion! The real value of Lee is that he is articulating so much of the widely-dispersed disinformation and prejudice about diabetes -- coordinated attacks on him would be a perfect platform for getting the truth across, and by raising his own profile he raises the...

Can we try to fix this?

Maybe I can't Defren, but I want to try. The forum has been so valuable for me and so many others that I can't bear to see it disintegrate like this without doing what I can. I don't think the UK diabetic community should have to go through another split and recriminations and rival forums. I'm...

Can we try to fix this?

I understand why people are starting to leave, but can we just hang on for a moment before it's too late and see what can be done to reverse the damage? You're a unique combination of people and everyone who leaves diminishes the forum as a whole. Can we just wait a little to see whether it's...

    Sad

How absurd! I will stop posting for a month in solidarity with them, but I really worry for the newly diagnosed whom they helped so much. This forum is in serious trouble and I can't see for the life of me why any of this should have been necessary.

    A probably-very-obvious question about carbs?

And how about stopping this thread right there? Both sides' argumenst have been succinctly articulated, there have been no personal exchanges, the OP can now decide for themselves. No moderator intervention needed. Please?????

    Bad Day

Take care of yourself, Fraddycat. As the others say, the BG numbers will come down as your body sorts itself out. Just concentrate on getting well and you will soon be back with all those wonderful 5s, but not before.
