Foods you used to think were good for you (or at least not so bad.)

Beans, lentils, brown rice, brown pasta, olive oil roasted root and other veg. Fruit. Porridge. Rolled oats. Semi-skinned milk. Fresh fruit for breakfast, then bean salad for lunch and pasta with my own tomato sauce for supper. Anyone want to calculate the carbs in that lot! I might just as well...

Also man centric medicine. Lots of experimentation doesn't apply to women and children because they are "complicated"!

    Why potassium and magnesium?

I'm taking sando-k prescribed by the doctor (but it looks like you can buy online). Each tablet contains 470 mg of potassium (12 mmol) and I'm taking 6 a day for 3 days. Going back in a week or so for kidney tests. I'm a year into low carb so probably not early adjustment. I think perhaps that...

    Menopause

hugs, it's a pain! very glad I'm on the other side, it will settle down but to be honest it does take a while..... just so you know Jilly Cooper (the author) said her mum experienced hot flushes in her 80s, I think this isn't unusual but they do get a lot less frequent and less overwhelming. I...

    Cooking with rice

that's about a 1/4 of a cup of cooked rice if I've calculated correctly, a lot below the usual eat this many carbs recommendations. Is the book any good? It sounds really interesting.

    Cooking with rice

I found that I actually prefer the reduced carb version of many of my standbys. The current "good carb" promotion meant I'd adjusted upward for things almost without realising. (I feel a tad bit brain washed )

    Cooking with rice

Adjusting ratios and portion control works well for me. I can eat bread, rice, pasta and potatoes but in much smaller portions than historically (bread, pasta and rice are more spike inducing for me than potatoes). Partly this is a reversal of my concepts of 'good' foods and 'bad' foods...

    Why potassium and magnesium?

early days... i'm moving from believing the advice to mistrusting the advice! its a bit of a shift :) something potassium friendly seems the way to go. its scary self proscribing :) feels a bit carnival tent :)

    Why potassium and magnesium?

So i stopped taking my blood pressure pills (ace inhibitors and calcium channel blockers) not very good results! Then started potassium supplements and bp is best it's been in years (including before stopped prescribed meds). Not looking for medical instruction, just wanted to log this. My...

    Why potassium and magnesium?

So low carb fixed my HbA1c but there is still stuff going on. I've got low vit D and low potassium. Potassium supplements have really helped with numbness and tingling in lips, arms and feet (within 24 hours). I've seen around the forum talk of a combined potassium/magnesium requirement can...

    Too hot!!!

You might be better with cool rather than cold, I learnt this in a heat wave in Egypt. Room temp water, room temp foods etc, also it's fine to fast. A cool cloth to back of neck is good. Go slow. Also it's a few weeks out of many so don't sweat (joke) the BG spikes.

Lager ... Or red wine ?

this really. my health professionals don't believe I wasn't eating like you describe, they think I changed my (undisclosed) habits and cut the chocolate, biscuits and cake I wasn't (and never have) eaten. I'm clearly sensitive to sugar and savoury sugar (wheat, rice etc) did for me. I agree that...

    bit of a wibble

Thanks everyone. I'm off to celebrate my non diabetic - not even pre diabetic - status. Achieved in a year of LCHF.

    bit of a wibble

Good to know. Do you have any recommendations? Also LCHF foods (I eat leafy greens and have substituted pasta with courgettes so loads of those plus tomatoes, fish and meat, and dairy. Bit stumped as to what else to try). I could try a banana with my meter a few times I suppose......Honestly if...

    bit of a wibble

I did and will again no doubt. I wish doctors were better educated and had more time (the second might explain the first). How can they keep up to date with developments and ongoing debates? Stops them having ideas of their own and challenging the status quo.......ah!
