    GP problems

Please don't generalise! Ours remains good, and as they have been doing vaccinations in the surgery, and sending GPs and nurses out to all the many nursing and care homes in the borough they have been more than busy and more than stressed. We had both our vaccinations at the surgery, as have...

How about the first port of call for a complaint - the practice manager?

After a blood test for something else I have just been told by text I have Pre-Diabetes.

Hello, welcome, and don't panic. You have arrived at the right place for all the help and advice you need. We are all diabetics of one sort or another and many of us have bought the t-shirt and put ourselves into remission in addition to losing shed loads of weight. I doubt very much lack of...

Role of magnesium in Type2 Diabetes

Am I wasting my time and money? I use a spray rather than tablets. It is labelled as Magnesium Chloride Brine, pure magnesium oil. 100% magnesium with nothing added and nothing removed. It comes from the sea bed in the Netherlands. I was advised that a spray absorbs better than tablets. 4...

    Am I getting this right?

Are you also keeping a food diary so you can watch for patterns? That will help. Some of the rises are well above 2 - I can see 2 rises of 4 and one of over 5. If you know what you had for those meals (all ingredients including sauces etc) you will see that food isn't suiting you.

    Recommendations - R-ALA

I have been taking R-ALA tablets since about 2014 for mild neuropathy in my feet caused by chemotherapy. It works for me and no ill effects whatsoever. I was recommended Swansons but last summer there was a problem importing it. (long story) It is not made in the UK. I had plenty of tablets, and...

Thoughts and Results from the NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme

I imagine it is the NHS "Eatwell Plate", which is no good for us. I have never been invited to the course, but was invited to the one run for T2s. I declined.

What to use instead of coffee

Was the weather hot on your day out? That can definitely raise levels a little just like a hot bath can. You say your level was 6, but what was it before your coffee? If you didn't test immediately before, then your 6 is meaningless.

    Supplements

    I don't need Omega3. I eat enough of it on a daily basis. :)

    Every Day Carry

I have been a diet controlled T2 for over 7 years and have never carried anything specific to my diabetes. I take alcohol wipes and alcohol gel for Covid protection, but that is all.

    Supplements

I have taken R-ALA (as opposed to ALA) for several years. I had mild neuropathy in my feet, induced by chemotherapy, and found it very beneficial for this. I haven't noticed any effect one way or the other as far as blood sugars are concerned. I don't take the others you mention. I have always...

Does poor sleep influence the HbA1c test result?

A poor night's sleep is most likely to affect your morning fasting level rather than your levels during the day. If you are regularly eating cottage pies and croissants, you can't expect your HbA1c to reduce greatly! Metformin on its own is highly unlikely to be of effect. It is intended to be...

    Got diagnosed 3 days ago

Everyone will spike after a meal, including non diabetics. Please don't worry about a 6.1 after 2 hours, especially as your total rise was less than 2. 7.8 is the magic number not to exceed at 2 hours, although that depends where you started from of course. You will end up starving yourself and...

    Got diagnosed 3 days ago

Please don't restrict your protein too much. I am 73 and eat large quantities. The older we get, the more we need to keep our bodies as strong as possible. If I fall down I want to know I can get up again. I eat around 3 eggs most days and never go a single day without at least 1, I also eat...

    Cholestrol. Are my readings bad?

I agree this ratio is the most important one - Trigs low, HDL high. However, according to my research the ideal ratio should be under 0.87mmol/l.

When to give in and go on meds

It is quite unusual for a newly diagnosed T2 to be offered meds with an HbA1c of 52. Lifestyle changes are normally the first to be tried. Mine was 53 on diagnosis and meds were not mentioned. I believe that is fairly general. Above 53 maybe different.

Are you going to get vaccinated?

I had my first A-Z jab in February and my second in April. My only side effect in the first was a day of feeling tired and a bit achy plus a sore arm when lifting it. Nothing after the second, not even a sore arm. My blood sugars remained stable both times. I'm still here and feeling relieved...

low carb for 3 months and now need to lower cholesterol

The total cholesterol is meaningless without the full breakdown of how it is made up. It is the total of your HDL (good cholesterol that you very much need), LDL (can be good or not so good depending on how good your triglycerides are) and triglycerides (the baddies). By eating a low carb diet...
