What's the difference between DKA and hyperglycaemia?

Just wondering how do you know the difference between hyperglycaemia and DKA? I went out for dinner and midway through I couldn't remember if I'd taken my insulin or not. So I opted to play it safe and take a low dose of 5 units (normally I would take about 8-9 to cover the meal I ate). Well an...

Government wants diabetics to email their results...

The Daily Fail reports today that GPs in one area are trialling a new service where diabetics send reports of their blood test results via email to their GP. While I don't agree with email replacing a consultation (as outlined in the rest of the article) perhaps this signifies a positive thing...

Feeling so ill in the mornings

It might not be diabetes related so you should let your doctor know that this is happening as lots of things can cause nausea.

Type 1 and Picking up Bugs

I get more bugs and infections that usual. My GP said something about diabetics having a lower threshhold for picking things up - but who knows if this is based on any science! Aside from diabetes you can have immune problems (this affects the general population) such as selective Iga...

    Flu jab 2010/2011

Diabetics and flu Hi I would like to know exactly what it is about diabetes that makes diabetics more likely to suffer complications of flu and why we need the flu shot. Is it that: a) our immune systems are compromised? b) Flu is only a problem if we're out of control. Otherwise if control...

    Alternative to Jelly Babies?

Marks and Spencers do mini bags of sweets - they are perfect for my hypos. You can get 3 bags for a pound. I get the pink foam shrimps or the banana foam sweets. You get about 18 sweets in a pack and a pack is worth 70 grams of Carbs. There is little fat in the sweets - just fast sugars. They...

    1/4 unit dose pens?

I have a novopen junior that gives half units. Sometimes I dial up a half unit and then when giving the injection, I don't depress fully so I give more like a 1/3 or 1/4 unit rather than a 1/2 unit. Obviously this method isn't that accurate.

    Novopen Echo

I wrote to Novonordisk about this pen last week. They replied and said there is no planned release date for the pen in the UK!! I would dearly love one of these pens as I frequently forget whether on not i've taken my levemir. If they start selling them in other countries - I will try an...

    Retinopathy!! Scared. :-(

If you're really worried you could get the test done yourself. A lot of highstreet opticians have started doing digital retinal screening. I got quoted £10 for a digital retinal screen at Vision Express. I had a digital screen done with the NHS that said i had retinopathy in one eye but I...

A Diabetic Review only every 5 or 6 months?

I'm T1 and am supposed to have an annual review with the consultant/DSN but it seems more like every 18-24 months in recent years as the hospital always cancels their appointments!! If your control is good then every 5 months should be fine. Do they let you have your own test strips or are they...

    Late onset Type 1

Personally I think there are more than just the four categories: T1/T2/LADA/MODY. I think the doctors just haven't got round to classifiying things properly yet and often don't do the right tests. What you get diagnosed with seems to depend on the doctor you see. I got diabetes aged 20 but the...

    Cortisone and type 1

Hi I'd let your GP or endo know that this is happening ASAP so they can advise you on changing your insulin dose. I take daily hydrocortisone (like cortisone) and when I take a high dose, my blood sugars become elevated. Steroids affect your blood sugar especially at high doses.

    retinopathy

The same thing happened to me - I received a letter from digital screening saying I'd developed grade 2 retinopathy in one eye. I worried myself sick. However, when I saw the opthalmologist - he said there was nothing wrong at all. I had a follow up after 6 months and a different opthalmologist...

    injections or pump?

Jopar or anyone else who knows.... In what ways does the pump improve your QOL that multi-injections can't? My last Hba1c was 6.3 but I take about 8 injections a day. I stick to a strict diet. Would having a pump make a big difference or not?

    Diabetes & Coeliac Disease

Hi PMS543 I'm diabetic T1 and found a couple of years ago that I am gluten intolerant so had to give up the grains completely. I actually find my diabetes a lot easier to control without the grains but I don't eat very many 'gluten substitute' foods. I also have a problem with dairy and eggs so...

    T1 taking Magnesium

I take magnesium 400mg a day. I was tested for this and my result was below the normal range. I have only really noticed that it helps with muscle weakness/cramping. I am type 1.

Strange results with new freedom lite strips

I kept getting strange results with my old freedom lite test monitor. If you ring the company, they may replace the strips though you would need to send them back to Abbott. I changed to a new meter in the end as I couldn't get reliable results.

    New wonder drug?

That's Victoza they are talking about. There is a big long thread about it somewhere on this site. What I'd like to know is how do you get put on Victoza? Can GPs do it or do you need a referral to a consultant? (Not for me but a Type 2 I know.)

T1 for 24 years, burning skin feeling.

Hi Si How are things thyroid-wise? I have had terrible neuropathic problems related to my underactive thyroid not being properly treated. These manifest as numbness and prickling in my fingers and toes. Better treatment alleviates the nerve problems. Also frozen shoulder can be caused by...

how rude is your GP is so upset with the way I was treated

Re: how rude is your GP is so upset with the way I was treat Hi Louise I would definitely complain as it sounds like you have been treated very badly by those doctors. The 'diabetes GP' should be training the trainee to treat patients with respect and concern, rather than modelling behaviour...
