Do your warning signs change when sitting/lying down?

Hi Just wondering if other Type 1's hypo warning signs are always consistently the same or do they change? I have noticed that my hypo warning signs can be less strong when I am lying down or sitting for extended periods. It's only when I stand up that I get really strong symptoms. If I'm...

What blood glucose monitor do you use?

Hi Medave Where did you get the contour USB from for £25? I really want one of those as the look useful. I read in the states they are selling for $75 so £25 is a really good deal. Do you like it so far? goji

    GP or specialist care?

Hi I'm interested to know whether Type 1s on here get monitored by a specialist at a hospital clinic or by a GP? When I first got diagnosed with diabetes, I always went to the local hospital clinic. In recent times, it seems that GPs want to take over care of diabetics with Type 1 (they...

Who has actually had a complication?

I have had diabetes for 12 years. For about 8 of those years I did not have good control (Hba1cs mostly ranging between 7s and 9s with an alltime high of 11.6). I have some background retinopathy and a possible case of autonomic neuropathy (though it is thought that this is not diabetic...

    airports/aeroplanes and Type 1's.....

Don't understand why queueing would give you a hypo more than any other activity? It seems a bit unfair to jump queues just because your child is diabetic.

    help, i've now got retinopathy.....

Hi ixlpixi Sorry to hear about your diagnosis. It is a horrible thing to have to deal with. I was told I had some background retinopathy but nothing that needed to be lasered. I have recently started benfotiamine and pyconogenol - I'm hoping these will help as my Hba1cs are already quite good...

Is it really possible to fake diabetes?

Interesting then that she got caught out over the diabetes. I didn't see that part in the Times article. I wonder if she actually gave her son insulin? It doesn't mention anything about that. I suppose it would be really difficult for doctors to ignore presenting complaints for fear of missing...

Is it really possible to fake diabetes?

I was reading this sad story today about a woman with Munchausen's by proxy, who among other things, managed to trick doctors into believing that her young son had diabetes. Apparently she did this by adding glucose to her son's urine. http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/u ... 999018.ece I'm...

    Should we ban butter?

NIgel, I appreciate the sentiment but the comment really made me laugh. Doctors aren't qualified at all to give nutritional advice - apart from a few lectures on rare diseases like beri-beri, they don't really study nutrition. Plus as the others have said, it was on doctors' advice...

    Should we ban butter?

Now I'm confused. Doesn't Bernstein recommend eating fatty foods like cream and butter as part of a health diabetic diet? I don't eat any butter as I have a dairy allergy but I eat coconut oil instead which is pure saturated fat. Does anybody know if that's likely to cause heart problems?

No benefit of self-testing for type 2

Totally agree! I was told by a nurse the other week not to measure my blood pressure at home as 'home testing can cause patients to get worried"!!! I can't stand that NHS mentality that thinks the HCP 'knows best' and the silly patient shouldn't worry their little head about things...

No benefit of self-testing for type 2

I wonder if as a community, we couldn't start raising funds to conduct our own trial into the efficacy of self-testing for type 2s? My thyroid group were sick of the medical mythologies promulgated by the NHS so they spent a year raising cash and are now in the process of conducting their own...

Question for Katharine about NHS testing protocols

Hi Katharine or any other doctor reading this.... I'm just wondering if you could explain what kind of guidance NHS GPs follow and what kind of education GPs get with regards to testing for vitamin/mineral deficiencies. I'm thinking specifically about testing for things like 25-OH Vit D (often...

    diabetes and thyroid problems..??

Hi Ebony Thyroid disease is associated with diabetes. I have Type 1 D and autoimmune hypothyroidism. Autoimmune disease tends to run in families and thyroid disease is more prevalent in females than males. If possible try and ask your DN to test for thyroid antibodies - this will give you some...

    absolutely gutted

What the screening people say and what's actually going on can be two different things. The screening people told me that I had R2 level retinopathy in one eye (the other eye was apparently perfect - they said this was odd) but a consultant opthalmologist who rechecked my eyes, said he couldn't...

    magnesium deficiency

Hi Carol First off, metformin can cause low B12 and low B12 can cause peripheral neuropathic symptoms like tingling and pins and needles. Did you get your B12 tested yet? Some 'alternative' treatments for neuropathy are: Alpha Lipoic Acid and Benfotiamine (Vit B1 - the fat soluble version)...

Contact lenses to detect BS levels.

Sounds like a nice idea but I can't see how this would work in practice. For one thing you'd have to be constantly looking in the mirror to check what colour your lenses are (could lead to accusations of vanity  ). And surely those colour variations don't offer that accurate a level. I...

    Feeling cold

I started getting cold all the time when I got thyroid disease. Diabetics and particularly female type 1 diabetics are more likely to suffer with thyroid disease than the general population. The thyroid controls the body's thermostat and an underfunctioning thyroid can leave a sufferer feeling...

What's more accurate-retinal screening or opthalmologist?

Hi Thanks for your responses. Retinal screening images are done with the hi-tech cameras and the digital images are surveyed by a consultant opthalmologist (eye specialist) - if something shows up then you are referred to an opthalmologist for manual (ie. by human eye) check of the retina...

What's more accurate-retinal screening or opthalmologist?

Hi I had retinal screening done a couple of months ago and got called for an appointment as the screening showed R2 pre-proliferative retinopathy in one eye (the other eye was perfect). I had my appointment with the opthalmologist and he said he doesn't know why they sent me, that there is...
