    Metformin and Vitamin B12

It is only an issue for people with a low B12 intake - AKA vegans (and to a lesser extent vegetarians). Vegans on metformin should most definitely take a B12 supplement - in which case it won't be a problem.

    Stevia

Interesting. Coca-Cola have been using Stevia in Japan for many years, and I haven't heard of it causing them any problems. It may be that they think there is a major aspartame scandal just around the corner, and they want to distance themselves from it.

Joined up thinking would be nice...

You wouldn't believe how stupid the NHS can be when it comes to different parts of the system not communicating. Nothing to do with diabetes, but a friend of mine was recently in hospital following surgery. She has various health issues, amongst which she is quite seriously lactose intolerant...

    New too Type 1 Diabetes

I'm not on insulin, so I don't have any experience here - but is it not a question of calibrating the dose for whatever carb intake you have? Richard Bernstein recommends not more than 6g carbohydrate for breakfast for all diabetics (he is T1), and unless you cut a very small slice of toast...

    Stevia

There have been a number of studies linking aspartame with brain tumours, leukaemia and other forms of cancer and neurological disorders. These studies aren't necessarily right (some of them have quite peculiar methodologies), but they certainly cast quite serious doubts on its safety. There...

    Stevia

I agree, it is important that people are aware of these sort of things - so thank you for starting this thread. I just wanted to point out that the safety issues aren't completely clear cut. People should make their own informed decisions about such things. I possibly phrased this badly. The...

    Boyfriend newly diagnosed, need help

Try not to get too hung up on individual readings. Everyone has an unexpected high now and again, and it is inevitable while you are still working out the effect of different foods. The important thing is that the overall trend is down. If it looks like it has stalled then he is almost...

    drinks allowed to drink!

I don't think I am confused here! You are quite right that low blood sugars cause a "hypoglycaemic incident", which is when the nervous system has insufficient glucose to function normally. This can cause a wide range of symptoms that are classified as either autonomic (involving the autonomic...

    Boyfriend newly diagnosed, need help

It depends when the blood was taken. During the day a non-diabetics blood glucose will fluctuate quite a lot (sometimes it can go well over 8 ) - it just doesn't stay there for long. If you are regularly getting a value greater than 7 for a fasting test (i.e. first thing in the morning after...

    drinks allowed to drink!

Hypos can be very dangerous - so must be corrected as soon as possible. If you blood sugar goes too high, then it will cause bad things to happen in the long term, but usually nothing immediately. If it goes too low then the shaking can lead to a diabetic coma and if that isnt treated it will...

    New too Type 1 Diabetes

It may not sound like traditional "health food", but bacon and eggs take some beating (very low carb). In fact any form of eggs are pretty good. If you like pancakes, it is possible to make a very palatable low carb pancake by replacing the flour in the batter with ground up GG Bran Crispbread...

    Boyfriend newly diagnosed, need help

For a fasting level 9.5 is still a bit high, but it is a huge improvement on what it was. In the medium-long term you should aim to get it into the 5-7 range. When the diabetes is under tight control you should aim for BG to be pretty close to that of a non-diabetic. Since the side-effects of...

    Stevia

The Stevia issue is not at all clearcut. The claims that it affects male fertility are the result of research done 40 years ago, and more recent attempts to repeat or confirm this work have failed. The claims that it is mutagenic or toxic are controversial. Some relatively recent research has...

    Is it normal?

If you are getting more thirsty than you used to, and consequently drinking more and urinating more then this is definitely something that you should get checked out. It could be a symptom of diabetes, but equally it could be caused by many other things (some trivial, some serious). Go see...

    Boyfriend newly diagnosed, need help

Try not to worry at all :!: Diabetes is a manageable condition, and once you learn how to manage it (and since you are already asking the right questions, you will) then it becomes an inconvenience rather than a major problem. It is important not to get complacent, the consequences of not...

    high protien diet

Either by accident or design that link is dead - it doesn't give an error, the resulting web page is just completely empty. I was intrigued, so I dug around a bit. All that I could find out is that the domain is registered to the "Kohima Research Facility". I haven't been able to find...

    Boyfriend newly diagnosed, need help

It looks like you are getting things under control - so that is good news. So long as the numbers keep on falling, then whatever you are doing keep on doing it. If the figures stop falling while they are still too high, then you need to think again about your management strategy. The short...

    WHAT DO YOU THINK ????

What sort of practice is it? Many large practices have one of the doctors designated a "diabetes lead". While they are not specialists, one would hope that they have a bit more experience and knowledge about diabetes than your average GP. If there is a doctor like this in your practice, you...

The books that I have read so far are: Charles Fox & Anne Kilvert (2007) Type 2 Diabetes: Answers at your fingertips. (6th edition). Class Publishing. Gretchen Becker (2001) Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year. Robinson. Richard Bernstein (2007) Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution. (2nd edition)...

    Still campaigning

Good for you, Hanna. It staggers me that so many people seem to know quite so little about this disease, even when this knowledge can save your life. The general level of education and support provided by both the NHS and Diabetes UK is really shockingly inadequate. I am lucky, not only do I...
