How being a diabetic changes: 62 years with type 1.

Oh I remember that kit @Grant_Vicat, and boiling those old syringes and needles to sterilise them. It was a huge step forward when home use blood sugar tests arrived, though the first I was given involved comparing the colour on the strip to a chart on the container. The first lancets that went...

    Newly diagnosed and totally overwhelmed

PS, I don’t let the expletives fly if a friend’s been kind enough to cook, I merely quietly say, again, that I have to be guided by current blood sugars and the time between injecting and insulin becoming active.

I reckon you’re very very unlikely to get any complications, you’re keeping too tight a control of your blood sugars for that. Yes, the Dafne course will allow you to have a more flexible approach to eating and dosing, and crisps and chocolate will probably reappear for you. Also, the longer you...

    hypoglycaemia

I’ve bought Dutch liquorice in Amsterdam, and from someone who brought it over to the U.K. the salted one, I agree, is delicious! Much better than Englese drops. The best English liquorice is a genuine Pontefract Cake. Hard to get hold of these days.

    hypoglycaemia

Our local shop sells packets of liquorice allsorts and each sweet is approx 5g carb. Hypo treatment treat. No, no deliberate hypos to get a fix and I bet your liquorice is better, Antje.

Hello @lizcoop, and welcome to a group many of us wish we weren’t a part of even though we’d miss connecting with the lovely people here. Reading about your planned trip to Brazil, I wonder if you could ask to change the dates of your booking? If you went at the already-planned time, the big...

No admittance for Type 1 Diabetics at Heathrow

I think it’s better to go by actual experience of the insulin(s) used. I know for one that even tho I agree with this site’s advice to keep insulin in a cool bag while travelling, I don’t agree that the Fiasp I use can be kept out of a fridge when travelling in a hot country, or airport...

    Hypos during the night

There are a few other things involved in blood sugar regulation as well as glucose and insulin. I begin to wonder if your wife’s difficult experiences might be related to one of them. https://books.lib.uoguelph.ca/human-physiology/chapter/glucose-regulation-[emoji639]/

    Hypos during the night

How about trying a week of set meals: if you’re in the U.K. there should be carb quantities for pre-cut bread and cereals, and you could weigh and calculate the rice, potatoes, etc then have the same carb amount each time. It might be a boring food week but by the end of it your wife might have...

    Changing from Levemir to ?

According to this we have until December 2026 to look for individual replacements for Levemir https://www.sussexformulary.nhs.uk/therapeutic-sections/6-endocrine-system/64-diabetes-mellitus/insulins-long-acting/

Struggling Lately, Too High.. Too Low & Fearful

Hi @John8, Type One for 55 years now and I’ve also ‘enjoyed’ a period of wildly fluctuating blood sugars in the past. I still, like many of us, have highs and lows, but the way I deal with them has been very different after doing a Dafne course. Have you done one? It’s very hard to live with the...

    Insulin being rationed?

I’ve not encountered this, but the only way that I can think of for your partner to be assured he has sufficient insulin to last until the next order is to talk with the surgery about the amount entered on his prescription. There’ve been articles about pressure on surgeries and pharmacies; maybe...

    Dafne course

Are you doing it online or with a group? If it’s with a group then, like this site, others’ experiences, needs and fixes will be interesting, and may be useful. I suspect you already have a course outline - how it’s covered, and the depth, may depend on who’s leading the course or how an online...

    Insulin sensitivity

I, too, need more insulin than I did when I was younger. My take on it is that I’m less active than I was when I was running after toddlers, going on long hikes, working, working and working, going to festivals, dancing, swimming . . . I still have outbursts of energy, going on long walks...

    Apple iOS 18

@Rachox, have you tried turning off Bluetooth then turning it on again? If that doesn’t work, try deleting LibreLink and then uploading it again. I once had a similar problem and that fixed it.

After all my concerns I called up the LibreLink advice on the net and saw it was ok for iOS 18. I then updated my phone to IOS 18.2 and Libre scans well.

Memory Loss after years of bad hypos

Another thought, does anyone hold Power of Attorney for your Mum? There are two kinds and you, siblings or a trusted other will need both, one for her health and one for her finances. If they’re already set up and need to be activated, there’s a government website that will tell you more...
