    Tresiba Flexpen Availability UK

Hi, I see what you are saying but in my experience the Tresiba Flexpen has a feature not present on the re-loadable pens. When the dose has almost been delivered the device pushes the last part in with more force - so it all gets delivered. Novopens (and similar) do not do this and to avoid loss...

    Day-to-day varying vision?

There is a possibility that it is due to 'posterior vitreous detachment' where the vitreous gel separates from the retina. This can give rise to many floaters, which are very noticeable at first, but diminish as the gel moves further away from the retina and the gap fills with fluid. PVD's are...

    Over 40 statins as standard?

The GPs prescribe them primarily as a box-ticking exercise. I was prescribed them in the same way some years ago. After a few weeks my legs became very weak and my back muscles were very painful. It was the start of Rhabdomyolysis, stopped taking the statins immediately and the acute pain...

    No background insulin, nighttime hypos

I wonder if the time of action of the Novorapid is playing a part? I was on Novorapid for many years. Once I started monitoring BG with the Libre sensor (over four years ago) I began to realise that Novorapid is very slow acting for me - sometimes reaching a peak over six hours after injection...

    Freestyle libre sensors falling off

Hi, I have found Libre 2 much the same as the Libre 1. I sleep on my right hand side, which sometimes causes a snagging when I have the sensor on that arm. I have lost a Libre 2 sensor in the night - never happens on the left arm - but I want to rotate the sites. Sometimes the sensor is loosened...

    Waiting for Nurse appointment

Hi, I agree with the other posts about lowering carbs. Hi Pinkpantha, Agree with others that hba1c of 58 isn't very high at all and would likely be reversed with diet and exercise alone. Even though Metformin is widely prescribed (cheap) it is not without side-effects. NICE guidance states...

Eating out at cafe/coffee shop/garden centres

Agree with what's been said. Also, egg benedict on ham or smoked salmon (no bun). Garden centres and National Trust cafes are very difficult - such high carb. If I'm visiting such places I carry a few blocks of cheese (either home wrapped or the little prewrapped ones from a shop) in my pocket...

Anyone know the difference between too high basal insulin and bolus absobtion issues.

Hi, Some unexplained hypos can be due to delayed stomach emptying (gastroparesis). Just a thought, might be worth asking your diabetes team.

    Zero-carb beer

I like a beer - but even with the relatively low carb Holsten, it always pushes my BGs high, unless I have a large bolus. Having seen this thread I have given the Salute lager a go. It is a revelation! No increase in BG at all and it tastes very good too. As a biochemist I am intrigued how they...

The honeymoon is over. Now what?

Many thanks for the suggestion (not been on recently so missed your reply ) I'll discuss with my Nurse practioner.

Libre on prescription for type 2

You can get the reader for free directly from Abbott (Libre website) I find it so much better than a 'phone - it is nice and small. There isn't quite so much functionality as the App, but does have a log book, trends and six different analyses.

Hi, just wondering, what is MND (temp) or MLD? Thanks

The honeymoon is over. Now what?

Hi, I became diabetic in 1994 - misdiagnosed as type 2 for some years, then LADA. I was also on type 2 drugs for about 10 years after starting on insulin. They became ineffective after a while - to be honest I am not convinced they ever helped at all. My pancreas would have been still producing...

    Manuka Honey

Sounds very painful.:( Have you been tested for Helicobacter pylori? This bug in the stomach is the cause of most stomach ulcers and can cause acid reflux. If you have it then the treatment is very simple with some antibiotics. Many people have the bug with no symptoms, but then it can flare up.

    DVLA!!

My previous licence expired in October 2020. Presumably due to covid they said they were not using paper forms. There was an online version to fill in. As long as I hadn't had treatment (eg laser) to both eyes in the past year I didn't need an ophthalmology assessment. That was it, job done, and...

How many times does everyone check their glucose levels every day?

Hello there. I used to do about 14 finger pricks per day - pretty useless to predict going up or down however. Then I self-funded the Libre sensor system for a couple of years - it is superb! Gives you instant readings just with a swipe of the reader, which shows a chart of your BG level (plus...

    Cholesterol Results

Was put on statins because that's what NHS likes to do. Took 3 months to recover from the side-effects. Another info source is 'A statin free life' by Dr Aseem Malhotra, 2021. He's a UK Dr who has been looking at the myth of cholesterol and health for some time. Makes very interesting reading -...

    Unable to reduce insulin needs

Thanks Helen, (spelling is correct I think). Can I ask why you were prescribed it? was it macula swelling or for blood vessel growth such as retinopathy or rubiosis (vessels on the iris)? The reason for asking is my local health board (in the UK) only prescribe it for macular swelling - even...

    Unable to reduce insulin needs

Hi Helen, I feel for you - some similarities with my experiences. I have been LADA for over 20 years - on useless meds to start with too. I'm on Tresiba long acting (20iU) and Novorapid 'fast acting' dose varies. I am very impressed by your low carb - I haven't achieved less than 100-150g per...

    Reactive hypoglycemia, thoughts please?

Hi, Thanks for your reply. My BGs at the time were normal except when going hypo. So, I don't think insulin resistance was an issue. Don't know about 'burning out' I remember a GP talking about that but this was before LADA was better understood (though it isn't fully understood even now). The...
