    Reactive hypoglycemia, thoughts please?

Agree with Emile. Your symptoms very familiar to me. In the late 70s I started getting such symptoms - no easy testing then. The GP suggested a low carb high fat / protein diet. I stuck to it sort of (!) Then in the mid 80s I had access to a glucose meter at work and finally could see the BG...

    Hypo treatment Slow to act

Hi, I use dextro tablets - pure glucose and they act quite quickly. Coke formulation has been altered because of the sugar tax, it is mainly sweetened with artificial sweeteners, much less sugar then previously (same goes for Lucozade). If you prefer a liquid anti-hypo google Lift® glucose...

    Cows Milk Substitute

Hi there, Just wondering about 0.5g carb in one teabag? My nutrition book reckons it's 0.2g per 100g of tea, so a teabag would be about 10mg or less? Very well done on keeping below 30g - I can't get near there!

Anti VEGF injections vs laser for retinopathy

Agreed, the goal of both treatments is to try and prevent new, undesirable, blood vessel growth. If the growth is close to the fovea then laser treatment isn't possible due to the danger to central vision. Until anti-VEGF treatments were developed the only alternative was to perform a...

Anti VEGF injections vs laser for retinopathy

Interesting. Though the first discussion you cite is the opinions of an individual opthamologist who favours laser and his few references are from the 70s and 80s. The second paper comes out pretty clearly that anti-VEGF is effective as long as it continues to be administered (ref comments about...

Anti VEGF injections vs laser for retinopathy

Laser can only stop blood vessels where it hits, it cannot reverse problematic blood vessels. Eyelea stops new blood vessel growth but can also reverse some of the damage. There was a large study in the USA a few years ago that shows that Eyelea is more effective against proliferative diabetic...

    Just diagnosed LADA (help!)

Hi, lots of good advice here. My few pence worth: I was misdiagnosed as T2 in 1995, onto insulin in 1998. Finally GP diagnosed me as LADA about 10 years ago. In my experience going for a low carb diet should help a lot. No sweet items at all (including fruit, especially fruit juices) and limit...

COVID vaccine and extremely high blood sugars

Hi, I had my 1st covid vaccination 3 days ago (Oxford). The last two days I have been a steady 14mM BG despite more than doubling my Novorapid (almost no carbo). I suspect it's a body reaction as if during an infection as others have said. Hopefully will stabilise soon - but certainly glad I've...

Type 1 High blood sugars after covid jab

Hi, I had my 1st covid vaccination 3 days ago. The last two days I have been a steady 10mM BG despite more than doubling my Novorapid (almost no carbo). I suspect it's a body reaction as if during an infection. Hopefully will stabilise soon - certainly glad I've had the jab!

High BG 3 days after COVID vaccine (AZ)

Hi, I had my 1st covid vaccination 3 days ago. The last two days I have been a steady 10mM BG despite more than doubling my Novorapid (almost no carbo). I suspect it's a body reaction as if during an infection. Hopefully will stabilise soon - certainly glad I've had the jab!

Anti VEGF injections vs laser for retinopathy

Hi Sedrah, I had about 8 injections in total and I saw improvements after about four. Macula swelling is when the central vision area gets blurred and retinopathy is when blood vessels proliferate over the retina and can burst or cause other problems. Eylea can help both conditions but is...

Anti VEGF injections vs laser for retinopathy

Hi Sedrah, I had Eyelea injections in one eye for a year or so and it made a huge difference. Eyelea is more expensive then the common alternative, but the injections are less frequent and it is more effective according to published research. The process is that you will have an eye test...

Cant find a cereal that doesn't shoot my blood sugar right up!

Sympathies! I went through this issue for years. In my search I could only find Shredded Wheat and plain porridge don't have added sugar, all other breakfast cereals have added sugar. Sugar-free museli tends to have dried fruit which (for me) is an absolute no no, while some have artificial...

    Appointments during Covid-19

My annual review in April was cancelled, haven't heard a thing since. I order my prescriptions online and they keep coming.

COVID-19: are you wearing a mask?

I have self-isolated since the lock-down (village shop delivers, they are stars!) but if I went out to shops I would definitely wear a mask. I have some P3 masks for DIY which are very effective for very fine particles, I wore one when the plumber visited last week to fix the broken-down water...

Type 1 Tresiba - how long does it take to kick in

Hi, I moved from Lantus to Tresiba a year ago (after a very bad episode with Lantus). I have found it much better. No discernable feeling associated with it starting to work (I inject 18 units at 08:30 every day) I have forgotten to take it once or twice (I use a Timesulin cartidge syringe cap...

    Freestyle Libre sensor unavailable

Clearly a problem. I am lucky to have Libre via the NHS (after 2 years buying them direct). Told 3 days ago that my prescription (submitted 12 days ago) would not be fulfilled for at least 3 weeks due to a national shortage.. I have ordered a pack directly from Abbott, but no indication of...

    Dangerous sweeteners!

This is really shocking. Though, any use of solicitors would likely be extremely expensive. Agree with an earlier posting, try and avoid sweeteners of any type. The non-dextrose containing ones may well have side-effects that won't be known for years.

    LDL cannot cross the endothelium

I agree with the views that the traditional cholesterol hypothesis is seriously flawed. However, if the endothelium is damaged and for whatever reason inflammatory responses are triggered then all sorts of untoward consequences might follow. Macrophages spend their life roaming surfaces in the...

Driving while feeling a hypo coming on

Hi JuicyJ, agree with others that it is an emergency, so pulling over if you feel BG is dropping fast is the best option. I keep some glucogel in the car door pocket for emergencies - it is too expensive for day to day mild hypos - when kept in the mouth, on the gums etc I find it is much faster...
