High readings how to bring it down fast

Infection can make our BG levels rise and pain can have the same effect all on its own. Keep testing and make sure you keep well-hydrated. If you have an ear infection that keeps coming back, this needs investigation. Have you been referred to a hospital over this ? My non-diabetic husband had a...

    Sharps bin for Holidays

Well, it's the sort of answer you probably won't get from a doctor or nurse because it's just common sense. Enjoy your holiday.

    Sharps bin for Holidays

I have never bothered with a tiny sharps bin for holidays. Pen needles /lancets will fit into a strong plastic box or tin. You may have something of a suitable size in your kitchen. When I get back, I just empty the stuff into the sharps bin at home.

Steroid injection and high blood sugars

Sounds as if it was worth getting in touch with the hospital ! Glad you're more under control. The whole experience of this sort of situation is stressful for all of us, but sometimes HCPs can be less than sympathetic.

How to get a Half unit pen

The usual reasons I'm afraid. There is less demand for half-unit pens, so some DSNs are not even aware they exist. As a result, they don't suggest them as a possible solution to anyone who is pretty sensitive to insulin, like me. They don't know that 0.3 ml disposable syringes measure in half...

    Today is a fantastic day!

I wish my non- diabetic, but overweight husband had this much determination ! It's an amazing result. Well done !

    diabetes burnout

I've had type 1 for 58 years. I developed a thyroid problem about 9 years later, but the over-active thyroid issue in the family was known already. I've never developed any other conditions said to be common in type 1. I think you need to look at the positives. First, you are still here, alive...

Self-management of Type 1 in hospital?

Yes, if they send for an in-patient hospital DSN, it is likely to be a minimum of 24 hrs, perhaps two days, before someone turns up. Of course, they don't know you, have very minimal information about your normal treatment and are used to being sent for whenever any 'awkward' situation arrives...

Do you feel that diabetes affects your social performance?

From what you are saying, it sounds as if you have not explained to your friends the effects different blood sugar levels can have on you. We are all different, but at 3.9 mml I am shaky, need to sit down and start crunching glucose tablets rapidly. If my levels are too high, I am tired, thirsty...

Am I wrong in thinking this is not okay?

I would write a letter to the practice manager, explaining the situation, including the fact that you were referred to the hospital because the DN said she had run out of ideas. Tell them how helpful you have found the hospital clinic and how de-motivating you found the group meeting, where you...

    No problem. Glad to help.

Unsure if I took my Lantus insulin yesterday

Yes, I think this is something that has happened to most of us at some time. You can get through the day by taking extra short-acting insulin,( the one you take for meals, also known as bolus). You need to check your blood test levels more than usual, as you can't tell how much they will rise in...

    Dental treatment refused

I've never heard the like. My first suggestion would be to contact your DSN or hospital clinic for advice. They may have come across this sort of thing before and have a standard letter to cover the situation. Your dentist may be young and relatively inexperienced, so relying on advice intended...

Type 1 MRI with closed loop system

Has anyone changed from an Exchange diet to carb counting?

I didn't find the fixed doses of insulin and carbs restrictive. I was well-controlled and stable. My parents and me were told that if I was going to a birthday party or if it was Christmas or a family celebration of some kind, it was okay for me to depart from the usual carb count and eat extra...

Has anyone changed from an Exchange diet to carb counting?

I was originally taught to carb count using what I believe was called Lawrence's Line Ration Scheme. You were allowed so many Black and so many Red Lines at each meal. For example, my breakfast in 1964 was three Black and two Red. In hospital. This took the form of bacon and egg with a small...

Self-management of Type 1 in hospital?

There is one big snag about the way the NHS allows type 1 diabetics to manage their bs levels in hospital. In my experience, we are given absolutely zero information about the carb content of what we are expected to eat. In the case of ordinary fruit and vegetables, this is fine if you are...

Sudden change in insulin needs - scary [ type 1]

Yes, high activity levels and summer temperatures around 20 degrees bring my insulin sensitivity up massively.

Difficulty handling high protein/fat foods with insulin pen

You can get insulin pens which allow you to measure half units. Would this be helpful ? I can't give you any names as I have gone back to using disposable syringes because of arthritis in my hands and don't remember. 2 mins later. A quick search of this forum comes up with Novopen Echo as a type...

    Basaglar acting too quickly?

Sounds as if you're stuck between a rock and a hard place then. I recommend that you always keep glucose or some sort of fast-acting carbs somewhere close to your bed, where you can grab it easily This is vital. People can die during the night because of a hypo. By changing your injection...
