    Newbie and totally overwhelmed

I'm glad to hear your surgery staff are behaving better than the hopital. No-one diagnosed with any sort of diabetes is anything less than shocked and to be sent home after that, with zero information or advice, is disgraceful. Good luck with your appointment tomorrow. Make a list of things you...

Hypo unawareness and bringing BGLs back up over target

I wasn't suggesting adjusting your insulin - just eating more !!!!!! (I count carbs as well and have done for the last 58 years, since being diagnosed aged 10.) If you want your BS test results higher, you need more carbs or less insulin. Eat extra. Don't take extra insulin for the extra...

    Persistent high blood sugars

Glad to hear you finally came out the other side, Chloelox. I'm still fighting to stay on course at the moment. It happens to most of us at some time.

Hypo unawareness and bringing BGLs back up over target

If the bottom of your target range is 6 mml as you say, you are going to have to eat more/ reduce your insulin in order to avoid a drop to below 6 mml. It really is that simple. The whole series of test results you have posted, together with the info that you have been taking inadequate amounts...

Hypo unawareness and bringing BGLs back up over target

I have lost hypo warning symptoms in the past , but got them back by keeping BS test levels higher. Don't hesitate to use your normal amount of fast-acting carbs to correct a hypo. You are just prolonging the hypo by not hitting it hard with enough glucose straight away. In your current...

    Blood sugar and menopause

I intended to convey the message that if you contact the DSNs, they are able to contact your consultant rapidly and may be able to arrange for a appointment to be brought forward, if you request it. (My GP refuses to take any action without a letter from my consultant.) All the DSNs I have come...

    Blood sugar and menopause

I had this problem, but HRT made my life liveable again. It is possible you need a different form of HRT. I was warned that I might have to try several forms to find what suited me best, ie. kept my blood sugar levels most stable. I just stuck with the first one I tried, because if I asked to...

How low is too low at bedtime?

There's nothing more annoying than a meter reading too low last thing at night, when you just want to go to sleep. You need to keep some fast-acting carb within grabbing distance for this situation.

How low is too low at bedtime?

I was always told 8 mml. Anything lower was always disastrous - and still is for me, even though I see lower readings recommended.

Has anybody ever had loss of hypo awareness?

A matter of two or three weeks might be enough to restore your hypo awareness, but depending on how low and how frequent your hypos have been recently, it could take longer than this. My advice would be to aim at dropping no lower than 8 mml at all costs. It can be tricky to avoid hypos...

    Can stress affect your Diabetes?

Yes, stress definitely sends your blood sugar levels up. Mine go up whenever I have a hospital or dental appointment, in the past whenever I had an exam, when I was moving house, when I had to give a presentation at work etc. Anything you are stressed or anxious about sends levels up. Basically...

Repeat Prescriptions Over Christmas and New Year.

Yes, I think it was always intended to cover emergencies, especially the sort of situation where a doctor called out to deal with an emergency has written a prescription for something which the patient needs fairly urgently. I believe we once used a pharmacy which was open at New Year to buy...

Repeat Prescriptions Over Christmas and New Year.

There is normally a rota, which means pharmacies in a particular area take turns to provide a service on Bank Holidays.

    Can she eat anything??

The 'experts' always give the sort of advice you have been given, but there is always a big difference between dealing with type 1 in theory and what happens in the real world. We are all different and it takes time to become familiar with the action of whatever insulin(s) we take on each of...

    Suddenly experiencing lots of lows

I too have had my BS levels plummeting over the last few days. This has not something I have experienced in cold weather until now. There always seems to be something new to throw a spanner in the works.

    Recently diagnosed

How are you doing now then ? I hope you are feeling a bit less uncertain about things if you have seen one of the Diabetic Specialist nurses at the hospital. Being told you're diabetic is a big shock for everyone, but the uncertainty about what this means in practical terms and how to handle...

    Phone appointment without Hba1c etc

I had a video call hospital appointment, but already have an appointment for retinal photographs elsewhere. It was a young doctor and two medical students. They seemed to have difficulty understanding / hearing what I said, as indicated by the fact thst they congratulated me on my survival and...

    HRT and BG readings

Yes, my GP was dubious about prescribing HRT even after the letter from the consultant, particularly as it was to control BS levels, which she told me repeatedly was not why it was generally used ! Best wishes with getting an answer to your problem.

    HRT and BG readings

It might be worth trying a different form of HRT. When it was prescribed for me by a consultant, I was warned that as every individual is different, it might be necessary to try a number of different products to achieve the best possible result for me. My real problem was wildly fluctuatng BS...

Type 1 Newly Diagnosed.. Help needed!

You are fortunate that the staff in your hospital team are so efficient and pro-active, ert. I have my consultant's email address, which is very helpful, but not all hospitals are like yours.
