    Weight loss

You seem to be doing all the right things and probably replacing muscle with fat. Plateaus are quite common and the body is a sneaky and uncooperative so and so at times. Perhaps it might be time to revisit the calories you eat and when. Not saying its the case with you, but after going through...

    Low carb

How true. Its the quantity (of carbs, fat and protein) that matters. If you don't use it, you end up saving it for a rainy day.

    Low carb

AndBreathe and Kirstin 251 have covered all the bases so well in their inimitable way. Just a small note on weight loss. Please do not forget about exercises - diabetics can lose 400-450g of muscle tissue for every kg of fat lost on a diet. By including a serious dose of resistance exercises in...

What does the UK leaving the EU mean for us?

Ooops - sorry about the word you removed. Where I am from its more a friendly term of endearment(in the context used) - I guess customs vary.

What does the UK leaving the EU mean for us?

Gee I feels sorry for you poor. All the Brexits seem to have disappeared - leaving the Britins holding the dirty end of the stick and the task of cleaning up the mess. Mod edit to remove offensive language.

As Oldvatr said metformin is reasonably benign drug that has been around since the 90's - it has a good safety record. If you should go on it and have gastric problems, the SR version seems to have fewer complications. Cheers and all the best. Nicely put Oldvatr.

    Getting there??

Great news and result Heretic! If you make changes to your diet etc you can always find out if it was effective by asking for a fructosamine test. Similar to the a1c, but it tells you what happened in the last 2-3 weeks instead of months. Keep up the good work.

I'm still getting used to being diabetic

Hi Sheila and welcome to the forum. You will find this is a friendly and supportive mob, ready to assist. I did shift work for many years and found it required a bit of organisation to keep me on the straight and narrow. One of the problem was that I gained weight - grab a quick snack or take...

On.metaformin so can I drink alcahol...

As PenfoldADP said metformin SR is a lot easier on the stomach (I am currently on it) and beats the standard stuff any day. One other thing about metformin is you are unlikely to have a hypo. If you are really inclined to drink, make sure you have eaten a reasonable amount before you drink. As I...

I think this is good news?

Hi sud5sala! So it seems and please accept my unreserved apology. I think it may have been late in my corner of the world - which is not an excuse. So I'll just beat a hasty retreat and crawl back into my man cave. Regards fene

    The best Diabetic Cookery Book

NO. You're spot on. However, I feel what they say is true and I follow their advice. My point is - we all walk different paths and follow different drums. But to imply such nonsense that sugar is used to replace fat in yoghurt and milk is just beyond the pale. I drink o% milk and eat 0% yoghurt...

I regret that the science of this somewhat large organisation is not in accord with your humble opinion - why not just say 'I do not agree with them' and why.

    The best Diabetic Cookery Book

Hi Just a thought , but why not have a look at the recipes provided by various diabetic organisations and pick out the ones that suit your brother's tastes. For example, www.diabetes.org has over 600 recipes - just go to 'my food adviso'r and then to 'recipe's. They all have a print option and...

I think this is good news?

I am an absolute fan of Professor Roy Taylor, but I am not sure his opinions on trans fats would be the same as yours. Try a few sites like www.joslin.org and www. mayoclinic.com and www.ada.com if you want the lowdown on why trans fats are high on the no-no list. From what I can gather they are...

Show Nutritional information in eating establishments- petition

I can't argue with that. My disease, my problem and my responsibility. I have yet to have a drama with eating something "bad" when I go out for a meal. Staff have always been understanding (I guess they wanted me to go back again) and obliging. If I cannot ask questions and make the correct...

    Protein Shakes Safe?

Modest carbs (according to what your body copes with), healthy fats, low GI foods and protein 1 -1.5g per kg body weight and exercise, exercise and exercise - particularly the resistance type worked for me. Whey protein supplements seem OK too. My dietician/nutritionist suggested low carb...
