First time being ill since diagnosis - advice please...

Hi all, I've caught a bug, I'm pretty sure a cold as we visited a friend with a 5 year old with a snotty nose on Saturday... And on Monday I started coming down with it... Anyway, I'm a bit worried as totally freaked myself out reading about illness and diabetes on-line - I have a ketone meter...

    Novarapid and ratios

It's the same insulin, yes - but the pen is WAY better than the disposable ones... As mentioned it does half units, plus it has a really nice dial up on it with a very reassuring click when you inject... Plus it has a memory function on the base of the pen - which is also reassuring for nervy...

Swedish study on pumps v MDI

... Interesting, thanks the_exile... Also interesting you feel less tired on the pump - do you know why that is? Is it because you're having fewer highs and lows...? Sent from the Diabetes Forum App

Swedish study on pumps v MDI

... Ah, ok - makes sense.. I was worried its something about injecting / doses... Feel a little bit better now. I know v little about pumps, and like some others have said, they don't appeal from a 'having something stuck to you' perspective - but - obviously that has to be weighed with...

Swedish study on pumps v MDI

Sorry if I'm being slow... And I possibly don't want to know the answer being on MDI... :-( - But why is the risk of a heart attack so much lower...? Sent from the Diabetes Forum App

Type 1s: What stupid things have people said to you?

Last night: 'my mums diabetic - she has been for 15 years.. She doesn't need to take insulin like you, but she really doesn't look after herself. I'm really worried that she's going to become type 1 too.' {{face-palm}} Sent from the Diabetes Forum App

Help please from people who use Porcine insulin...

@CarbsRok, are you on a pump too? As above; I'd be super grateful for any insights around night time basal... It's the only bit I've not figured out yet - as I said to Azure above, I'm still waking with blood sugars around 8, but I can't see how I can increase my isophane as I'm going to bed...

Help please from people who use Porcine insulin...

Hi @azure, that's really helpful info, thank you... And so odd - I was starting to think I maybe had arthritis too! :/ I also was *extremly* low and emotional, developed bad skin, and put on half a stone in less than two months... Fingers crossed and touching wood as typing... But the former...

Help please from people who use Porcine insulin...

Thanks all for the replies - day 5 and apart from adjusting to the new action / profile of the porcine, all is going well... hypo awareness is definitely now there too....!!

What numbers do you consider to be a hypo...?

... well - after switching my insulin, I now understand the saying "four is the floor"....!! Two and a half weeks off Levemir and four days off Novo - and all of a sudden I can feel anything around / lower than a 4.5.... prior to this I was in the 3's and not noticing - which was worrying...

Help please from people who use Porcine insulin...

Ah thank you @Zoe king; so reassuring to hear...! I've managed to persuade them to prescribe it - today was my second day on it... Trying to get my head around the isophane (medium acting) porcine one - I took it before bed last night but it seemed to only last 6hrs...? I took it at 11pm - my...

    Dr. changed my needles

@Alasdair do you mean you're getting lower blood sugars from the shorter needles...? That's interesting/confusing... I did have the 4mm ones but my GP suggested I may have better absorption with *longer* needles... I used one of the 8mm needles she gave me to try and it hurt like hell! So I...

Help please from people who use Porcine insulin...

Hi @anna29 - thanks so much for getting back to me... I've been away this week but very grateful to hear your experiences.... When you say it taking 5/6 hrs to kick in, were you on the Isophane or Neutral - or both...? And did both take that long to kick in for you...? Did you inject the...

Help please from people who use Porcine insulin...

Thank you @robert72 :-) I won't hold a sigh of relief till I've actually got it though; I wouldn't be surprised if I still may have to battle a bit with my endo - but at least I'm on the right tracks...! Its really quite remarkable the difference since stopping the Levemir - I was close to...

Help please from people who use Porcine insulin...

A general update - saw the diabetic nurse at the (hospital) clinic today.... first up, she's non-prescribing - they all are apparently (?) - anyway, explained all - and she wasn't remotely surprised and didn't even vaguely suggest a) that porcine insulin wasn't available or b) what I was saying...

Help please from people who use Porcine insulin...

.... do you mean you're reading about the use of porcine insulin with interest @ElyDave - or about how to manage insulin timings in general...? :-) @noblehead I forgot to say, the lady at the IDDT says her daughter (t1) doesn't really eat carbs.... it was in conversation and I was too absorbed...
