    Eye tests (not retinal screening)

Hello everyone, hope you're all well :) Disclaimer: I did a search but the word 'eye' was not liked by the search function so all the results were for 'tests' Apologies if this has been asked many times already. Anyway I'm overdue for an eye test, like a normal eye test you have at...

Discharged From Diabetic Clinic by locum consultant

At a previous clinic (pre-pandemic) it used to say on appointment letters if you missed an appointment you'd be discharged. I'm not sure what the rules are at the clinic I'm at now but they do say they aim to phone within 2 hours of your appointment time. At my dermatology clinic they wouldn't...

How old are you and how long have you had diabetes for ?

It's my 24th diaversary today :D I'm 33. I'm definitely finding it harder the longer I have diabetes, thankfully only some background retinopathy so far.

    Flu Jab 2021

I had my flu jab on Friday, normally I get a sore arm and sometimes very mild side effects, this time I didn't even get a sore arm  I'm not bragging though, I promise. Hope you feel better soon.

Type 1 Reminder App for Pump Users

My calendar has a lot of arrows on it :hilarious: I tend to do about a week at a time but it's covered in different letters and different coloured dots anyway, I'm old school and very messy :D Same. I put the amount of insulin I need to last me 3 days, plus some extra for any illness etc in...

Type 1 Reminder App for Pump Users

Hi @Hellikopta, my pump (medtronic 640g) has a set change reminder function, I'm surprised they don't all have that. I'm old school and write on the calendar when I need to do stuff, C for cannula for example.

    Diabetes/Thyroid connection?

I have hypothyroidism but I have a dodgy immune system. They told me many moons ago (probably about 15 years) that I would end up with an underactive thyroid at some point because I had the antibodies.

    Annual review over the phone

I prefer phone reviews/appointments and I hope in future we will still get the option to have them. My GPs is less than a 10 minute walk away but the hospital clinic I attend requires 2 buses to get to. We're hoping to move soon and I'll be attending the same hospital, it'll still be 2 buses...

    Booster vaccine

I've still got a while to wait until I can have a booster, but the drop-in places near me that are doing booster jabs are only offering Pfizer.

    Breakfast

If I'm having a lower carb breakfast I have a fried egg with spices and avocado (sometimes tomato or black beans with it) and some lime juice and sweet chilli sauce. Sounds a bit weird but it's really nice. If I'm being healthy-ish I have banana, greek yoghurt and nuts or seeds with a bit of...

    Potato carb amount

How did you get on @JustLucky? I find mash one of the least problematic carbs but others find it can spike them a lot.

    Meter cases!

I use a small make up bag, I like ones that you can wipe the spots of blood off :D I can't be doing with having to put everything in it's place, I just chuck everything in, blood tester, libre reader, test strips, ketone strips, finger pricker, lancets, batteries, kitchen sink lol....you get the...

    Libre sensor

I used to do it 24 hours before with the libre 1, with libre 2 I have to do it at least 48 hours before, I usually do 72 though, it's just not accurate for me otherwise. If it's accurate straight away then you don't need to attach it in advance.

    Type 1 high readings

Hello again @grahamrb, Is your wife on a mixed insulin or is she on basal/bolus and able to take correction doses when she is high? If she is on a mixed insulin (or fixed doses) then the following may just confuse matters. Insulin sensitivity factor is also known as correction factor and it's...

    Type 1 high readings

P.s are you unwell? That can cause high BGs and add to insulin resistance. Do you have a way of checking for ketones? If you have ketones you shouldn't exercise. If you're worried or in doubt call 111.

    Type 1 high readings

Hi @grahamrb, if you're high you can become insulin-resistant and you may need extra insulin in addition to your normal correction dose. Sometimes I can need twice as much insulin. Do you know what your insulin sensitivity factor is? Alternatively (or in addition) you can go for a walk or do...

T1 refused insulin repeat prescription - Twitter thread

This used to happen to me all the time at my old GPs but it was a prescription review that was needed, not blood tests. Every 6 months they were required and every 6 months my mum would have to ring and argue with them. At that point my prescription was insulin, test strips, ketone strips...

    A simple pump mistake - a rush to A&E

I remember seeing this news story, it might've been on here https://metro.co.uk/2019/03/17/lover-tried-poison-diabetic-fiance-using-remote-controlled-insulin-pump-8916952/ :nailbiting: I'm glad you're ok @Doug88, did they put you on a drip in A&E or...?

    Verucca treatment

When I had a verruca a few years ago the podiatrist I saw said to just leave it and it would go away on it's own, which it did. I don't think that advice was specifically because of my diabetes though.

Type 1 How much long-acting insulin do you take?

Hi @siriusblack, we're all different so the amount of basal we need will be different, and the amount you need is the amount you need. That said, I don't take any long-acting insulin as I have a pump, but my basal is 28 units.
