    LCHF and the NHS

It's "obviously" "common sense" to non-medically-trained people and supported by lots of happy customer testimonials and best selling books but sadly next to no admissible research which the NHS could base a decision on.

    DKA after diagnosis

I am not aware of any recommendation to check ketones unless you have unexplained high BG (i.e. there is no need to check for ketones if your BG is high after you've had a gallon of lucozade). And as long your BG are normal, you do not need to worry about DKA.

    Ketoacidosis symptoms

Well, it's not uncommon for previously undiagnosed T1s to be diagnosed when they develop DKA (according to wikipedia, 30% of children with diabetes are diagnosed this way). For the already diagnosed diabetics, the risk is apparently 0.46-0.8% per year. It's in the name though - Accident and...

Is it OK to eat fruit?

First of all, I'm not convinced that replacing glucose with fructose is even a good idea Tell your doctor that he's an idiot - the fructose content varies with fruits, but as a general rule of thumb 50% of the total sugar will be glucose (either free or bonded sucrose). If you are trying to...

Nausea, trouble breathing, being barely able to walk 300m to A&E.

    Diabetics are carb intolerant

It boggles my mind how you could possibly think the type 1 diabetes could be described as "doesn't tolerate carbs" - without insulin, you die just as quickly if you don't eat anything.

    Diabetics are carb intolerant

No, that's just a stupid oversimplification.

    Coconut water

It seems to be relatively low in carbs so I guess that makes it alright but I see no particular reason to pick it over water either

Medic alert bracelets yay or nay!!!

Whilst I personally really really hate these bracelets being loose and moving around and all that (I've got a leather one that's basically a watch armband), I think the main purpose is to give EMTs information - the any passerby who might find you is unlikely to be equipped to treat you anyway...

Type 1 rules we accidentally break :/

I rarely if ever record BG test results (as long as they are within range I don't need to change insulin doses, and the only purpose a record would serve is... For bragging to the doctor?)

Are control solutions worth bothering with

Simply put, it doesn't matter when BG is that high (there are too many factors to account for for a perfect correction dose taking you from 17 mmol/l to 5.0 mmol/l to work). Remember, the error gets smaller as BG gets lower.

    tattoos &type 1 diabetes

The correct symbol is the Rod of Asclepius (the Greek god of medicine) with just one snake and a staff; the "two snakes" one is the caduceus is the symbol of Hermes (messenger of gods - thus the wings) which has become dominant in the US because one guy happened to pick it as the symbol of the...

    tattoos &type 1 diabetes

As long as your control is good diabetes should not cause any problems (wound healing and such); just make sure to have your meter and hypo treatment handy as people say that it can cause a drop in BG. As for the symbol, keep in mind that there is quite a bit confusion about which symbol to...

Am I type 1 or type 2 ? Maybe LADA?

Evidently not; even the most hardcore low carb advocates realise that it doesn't work for T1 - even if you eat no carbs, your liver can make more than enough glucose to fuel your body through a process called gluconeogenesis and guess what, you need insulin to cover that glucose. From what you...

    Exercise causing hyperglycemia

Simple: Take extra insulin for any sport which raises your BG (start of with half the correction dose you'd otherwise take to correct the high). The reason for this is that the "BG up = carbs eaten" idea is massive oversimplification; in this case, hormones released in response to intense...

    Petition the powers that be?

No, because it's not the government's job to pass laws regulating diabetes care - the one's I've seen was rejected on those grounds.

Is it possible that my friend might have diabeties?

Certainly sounds like she has all the classical symptoms, so a visit to a doctor would seem in order.

Anyone used a CGM and DIDN'T like it?

I had been using a Freestyle Navigator for about a year after I was first diagnosed; I mostly stopped using it because it produced too many false hypo warnings (doesn't help that the built-in meter always read 1-2 mmol/l less than my other meters) and because wearing it restricted my activities...
